Inklings Calligraphy

Gallery: Alchemy

Some years ago I began a series of calligraphic works on alchemy. This subject has long been a source of fascination for me and I have researched it with vigour. One of my largest pieces, The Alchemical Magnum Opus, is an essay I wrote on alchemy (incidentally the term magnum opus, meaning great work, originated within alchemical circles and represents the alchemical journey or process in it's entirety). Hermes Trismegistus (thrice great Hermes) is seen as the father of alchemy and is associated with the Egyptian God Thoth, and the Greek God of Communication, Hermes.

The Stages of Completion won the Inaugural Haruhisa Handa Excellence in Calligraphy prize at the Calligraphers' Guild of WA Inc exhibition in 1999. Most of the pieces are built up from paste paper or watercolour washes, layered with text upon text occasionally obscuring the previous, and often finishing with a layer of gold, in an appropriately parallel process to alchemy.
