WELCOME

door knocker

I am a freelance writer based in Sydney, Australia. I have lived, worked and studied in the UK, South Africa, USA and Australia.

After completing my BA and Honours Degree in English Literature at the prestigious Stellenbosch University in South Africa, I began my career as a copywriter for Ackermans, a major retail chain, based in Cape Town.

Since then, I have worked in the fields of advertising, marketing, public relations and publishing. I have been self-employed since 1994, offering my services as a writer, web content provider, editor, subeditor, proofreader, freelance journalist, feature writer and copywriter.

I have written for consumer and business-to-business publications, and my by-line has appeared in a variety of newspapers, magazines and directories, in Australia and overseas. My clients have ranged from big internationals to government departments and have included VISA, IAG, Panasonic, Telstra, Dymocks, Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust, the NSW Department of Education and Training, Emirates, Hydraulink and many others.

ABOUT GILLIAN HANDLEY

Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance Logo

The best writers do more than write. Just look at Hemingway — author, journalist, adventurer and sportsman, he packed a hundred lives into one and, as a result perhaps, has the highest recognition value of writers in the world. We can't all be Hemingway but any writer who fully engages with life will find their writing enriched by their experiences.

As our careers and our interests become more specialised and focused, we seem to suffer from tunnel vision — which is why my varied background and wide experience is an asset as it gives me a wide perspective.

I was born in Kenya and I have lived in Britain, South Africa, the US and now Australia. I have travelled widely and I have worked in marketing, advertising, publishing, public relations and retail. I also have a vicarious interest in the worlds of horses and music. I am naturally curious and I have written on many topics in all sorts of different ways. In the process, I have discovered that there is no such thing as a boring business. Dig deep enough and you will unearth shiny, unexpected nuggets of knowledge in the most unlikely places. In my trawling through product information, for example, I have learned that at least one Australian insurance company does not insure igloos. (Can you imagine the boardroom discussion when that decision was taken?) A leading electronic goods manufacturer has incorporated the chaos theory into the humble microwave — the faster to defrost food (and quite possibly the faster to alarm customers who have to press a 'chaos defrost' button).

I have also discovered that writing for a living can put you in some bizarre situations. Some years ago, I organised the launch of a government-owned regional airline in southern Africa, only to wake up on the morning of the launch to a full-blown coup d' état. The president of the country, who was to launch the airline, was in hiding along with the entire cabinet and we were the only ones left out in the open. Public relations on the run!

On another occasion, time constraints forced me to interview the tourism minister for Zanzibar on a hydrofoil en route to Zanzibar. Halfway into the trip, the Russian-built hydrofoil broke down and we spent the next three hours bobbing about like a cork on the sea. Undaunted, the minister extolled the scenic beauties of his country while our fellow passengers threw up copiously and noisily, all around us.

As part of my public relations duties, I was often left manning exhibition stands for excitable Malawian clients who kept disappearing to buy car tyres when they were supposed to be selling their tourist product. These same clients would optimistically offer us payment in potatoes when times were tough.

I am also a craftsman (craftsperson if I were to get all politically correct on you). Bad grammar sets my teeth on edge; typos make my fingers itch. I can cover almost any topic you care to name. I've written about everything from HIV Aids to airlines; insurance to facelifts. I've covered tourism, travel, ecotourism, food, cosmetic surgery, corporate profiles, city profiles, electronics, beauty, health, nutrition, parenting, politics, social opinion, business, insurance and humour.

I have written for clients at all levels, from governments and multinationals, to local community bands. I have dealt with all kinds of people, from government minsters to musicians. Incidentally, I enjoy the company of musicians. They are a lot like writers — except that deadlines are generally an unfamiliar concept to them.

I have run my own freelance business for many years and I am used to working independently. I am fast, accurate, creative and I follow a brief faithfully. Many of the projects that I have worked on have required that I work as part of the client's team. My people skills enable me to fit in with any team easily and quickly. I have never yet missed a deadline and I pride myself on delivering any job on time and in full. I am often commended for my meticulous attention to detail as I usually identify the mistakes that others miss.

I am a member of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance. In terms of volunteer work, I am administrator of a local public school band program and president of the local school council. I also assist with the public relations and advertising for two Sydney-based community bands.

WEB CONTENT PROVIDER

web

I write relevant, informative, easily digested and search engine-optimised copy for websites.

SOME WEB CONTENT SAMPLES:

I wrote most of the copy for the IAG web design project. This involved sourcing the information from stakeholders and writing approved and search engine-optimised copy for some 2000 pages of the NRMA national website and the subsidiary websites of NRMA Queensland, SGIO and SGIC.

The project also involved conceptualising a way of putting business insurance case studies across to clients effectively. I wrote scenarios for each type of business insurance, outlining potential disasters and how NRMA can help minimise their impact. See the business case studies for examples.

I recently subedited and proofed the Panasonic Australia website.

On a different topic altogether, I wrote consumer-friendly copy for a plastic surgeon's website. This required writing specialised copy that complied with Australian medical guidelines.

I have also produced copy for, and subedited the Atron Enterprises website.

I have contributed to the Canadian-based online magazine Suite 101. You can read my article on safety in South Africa during the World Cup, or the one on medicines and child safety.

Other clients have included: Emirates, Visa Best Buys Club, Telstra, and The National Breast Cancer Institute.

SUBEDITING ~ WHAT'S INVOLVED

The job of the subeditor is sometimes summarised by the 'Five C's' - make it clear, correct, concise, comprehensible and consistent. Clear communication is the desired end result of all publications. The style of the communication should suit the reader, the intention of the communication and the medium. The subeditor needs to view a document from the perspective of the author, the reader and the publisher. Subeditors are also required to work within a budget and to adhere to tight timetables. The craft of subediting covers various areas:

Structural editing

The subeditor looks at the document as a whole in terms of content, structure, language and presentation. All of these elements need to reflect the aim of the publication and meet the expectations of the readers.

Copy editing

Here the focus is on accuracy and consistency in terms of word use, grammar, punctuation, spelling, style and layout.

Proofreading

This is the final check for errors and inconsistencies before publication.
