Cropping in DIP 10 and 7
Ó kimlizzy 2005
There are two ways you can crop a photo in DIP 10 and 7.
First you will open a background. This will give you a better idea of the size you will need to crop your photo:
File/Open. Select the location of your background and either double click it or left click on the photo and then click OK.
Now open a photo the same way you just opened your background.
DIP 10 Look to the right hand side and you should see the Stack and Files. (See below)

If the Stack and Files are not showing, click on the Stack and Files icons on
the Toolbar. ![]()
DIP 7 Your picture will be at the bottom of the screen.
You want the background layer to be active so left click on it in the Files list. In DIP10 it will have grey around the outside and your background will be showing in your work area. In DIP7
it will have a black border around it.
To move your photo onto the background:
Keeping your background selected, move your mouse pointer over the photo and keeping the left mouse button down, drag your photo onto the background.
To position your photo, left click on it and move it into position. Resize if necessary by left clicking on the little squares (DIP10) or the yellow circles (DIP7) and dragging until you are happy with the size.
You will now crop your photo.
Method 1 Cropping a rectangle or square
DIP 10 and 7 Make sure your photo is the selected layer by either left clicking on the actual photo or left clicking on the photo in the Stack. Now go to:
Format/Crop/Selected Object

Holding down the left mouse button, drag out the rectangle guidelines.

Adjust by holding your left mouse button down on one of the squares around the side and dragging the guidelines in or out. When you are happy with your selection click "Done".
Method 2 Cropping a different shape
DIP 10 Using the Marquees Tool.
Click on the marquees tool button ![]()
The tool palette will open.

If the palette does not open, click on the selection button ![]()
Uncheck "shape proportions". Select the required shape.

Starting at the top left hand corner and keeping the left hand mouse button down, drag down toward the right hand corner. Don’t worry if the selection isn’t quite right. This can be adjusted by clicking "Adjust Selection" on the tool palette. Using the squares around the outside, drag your shape to suit. Now click "Invert" on the tool palette. Your photo should look like this:

Effectively, you have selected the outer portion of the photo that you don’t want.
Close the tool palette the click on Object Tool ![]()
Now right click on the photo and select "delete".
Your cropped photo remains. Left click anywhere off your work and the marching ants outline disappears.
DIP7 Using the Cut out Method
Keeping your photo selected, go to:
Format/Create a cut out/With a Cookie Cutter Shape
Select a suitable shape and resize the guidelines using the little yellow circles as before.
Click "Next" then "Done".
Right click on the second layer (the original uncropped photo) in the right hand stack and "Delete". Your cropped photo remains.

The shape you use will depend on the content of a particular photo. Experiment with the different shapes to see which one suits your photo best.
