This tutorial assumes you have a basic working knowledge of DIP/DIS

Open a photo. Duplicate it (Ctrl + d) and close the original.

Working from the duplicate:

If you want to have some B&W effects you’ll need to duplicate again.

If you want all colour there is no need to duplicate.

Assuming you’re using B&W effects:

Select the bottom photo and change it to B&W

Go to Insert/Shape/Square.

Change the Line Thickness to suit the photo. Thickness will depend on the subject material in the photo and how you want it to look. For my photo I used a thickness of 8.

Change the line colour to white (or colour of choice)

Now remove the centre of the shape.

Click on the Paint Bucket and select "No Fill".

Place the frame over the part of the photo you want as the focal point. In this case I place my frame over the subjects face.

Duplicate your frame as many times as required and move them around and rotate them as required.

Don’t worry about the order of the layers at this point.

Add a shadow to each frame.

Now that you have the shadows in place it is easier to see how they are layered.

On the Stack:

Left click on the bottom frame layer (your focal point) and drag it all the way to the top.

Rearrange the other layers in the same way until you like the look.

Remember to keep that "focal frame" at the top.

Once you have your layers organised you need to erase the parts of the frames that shouldn’t show.

The only frame you won’t touch during this process is the top focal frame.

Click on a frame.

Go to Effects/Transparency/Transparency brush

Select Hard Brush, 100% Transparency and adjust the size to suit.

Carefully erase the parts of the selected frame that shouldn’t show.

Select Done when finished.

Continue in this manner until each frame is complete.

Double check each frame before you start the next one. If you have made a mistake you can easily "undo" and start that frame again.

To leave your work as is: Edit/Flatten all objects. Save as……..

Now mark out the first photo you want to be B&W. Mark around the frame along the centre of the frame back to the beginning and click on the starting square.

Mark out the next and subsequent parts you want B&W.

When finished, click on the object tool then click on the Scissors on the toolbar. This action cuts out the coloured portion of the photo frames you want as B&W.
