What is Hap Ki Do?

Hap Ki Do stands for the way of coordinated power. Hap means to 'Co-ordinate' or 'Combine', Ki means 'Force' or 'Power', and Do stands for 'The way'. The philosophy is to use minimal force in overcoming an opponet. This means that anyone can learn the techniques behind hapkido as great strength is not required.

Hapkido employs the use of powerful kicks both linear and circular, foot sweeps, hard and soft fist attacks as well as defensive blocks. Hapkido also uses Pressure points and nerve point attack techniques, joint locks and wrist locks in order to arrest or stop an opponent's further attack.

Hapkidoist's focus or collect Ki into a central region in our bodies called the Danjun, by methods of controlled breathing. Here in the Danjun Ki is collected and used swiftly in combination with a technique in order to overcome an opponent. This is what is meant by 'co-ordinated power'. One trains ones body and mind to co-ordinate that unlimited supply of Ki or energy available to anyone and apply it with technique in order to overcome any situation.

The Benefits of Hap Ki Do

There are many benefits of training in Hap Ki Do. These include self defence, improved fitness, coordination, self esteem and confidence, relaxation and stress management, discipline and better awareness in body and mind. These benefits will become more apparent as your training continues.

You may have had some of these benefits already in mind if already deciding to start Hap Ki Do, and we would like to help you reach your goals. This introduces another benefit of training at the Bondi club: the friendly social setting. Hap Ki Do is an art that can be (and is) practiced by women, men and children of all ages, shapes and sizes. Activities are structured for individual abilities, fitness, grade and age so that there are no restrictions on who can train.

Nevertheless, starting a martial art can often be intimidating. People do strange and difficult kicks, throws and other techniques. They're yelling all over the place and don't those black uniforms look scary! Don't worry. Just about everyone who starts is at least slightly intimidated.
