WA's lobster industry facing disaster as numbers fall

The $300 million western rock lobster fishery is facing a crisis with monitoring revealing there are almost no baby lobsters in prime fishing locations for the first five months of 2008/9 season. Unless there was a dramatic turnaround in the numbers in the next four months, the 2011/12 season would be a total disaster.

Fraud leads to big fine, licence loss for South West commercial fisher

A commercial fisherman from Bunbury has been fined $25,000 for two "gaining a benefit by fraud" offences, after applying for act of grace payments for the closure of the Geographe Bay Crab Fishery, and an application to enter the West Coast Demersal Scalefish Fishery. Defence claimed the offence was solely to persuade authorities in charge of Geographe Bay that the fishery could sustain a commercial catch. With earlier convictions for submitting false catch returns he is to be stripped of his commercial fishing licence.

WA research and grains help feed the world's farmed fish

Western Australian research is now helping to feed fish in aquaculture projects across the world and is providing another valuable market for the State's grain farmers.
