Sustainability questions about Peel - Harvey estuary commercial fishery

The Mandurah Licensed Fisherman's Association has voluntarily undertaken an Environmental Management System process to provide an organised, documented and coordinated approach to improving and demonstrating the environmental performance of the fishery harvesting the estuarine fish and crab stocks. The community is entitled to feel confident that these species are being caught in a sustainable manner.

Wetland trial to help reduce nutrients from Ellen Brook

The Bingham Road Creek Project aimed to reduce nutrient loads by creating an artificial wetland that slowed water flow and increased nutrient absorption. The Ellen Brook Catchment provides only 7% of the Swan River's annual water flow but it produces 37% of the river's phosphorus load and 10% of its nitrogen load.

Common sense rules in Ningaloo Marine Park

Action by Recfishwest has resolved the anomaly of two vastly different sets of recreational fishing rules in commonwealth and state waters of the Ningaloo Marine Park which left many fishers unknowingly breaking the law. State recreational fishing rules will apply in the entire Marine Park after 2 July. This resolution highlights the value of a strong peak recreational fishing body supporting the interests of recreational fishers.

Audit of Jurien Bay Marine Park finds failures

The first formal audit of a WA Marine park reports that Jurien Bay MP appears to be failing to meet the two primary objectives of comprehensive protection of its biodiversity through provision of adequate sanctuary zones, and objectives for the conservation of populations of targeted finfish. Recommendations include removal of commercial fishing "exemptions", different recreational fishing rules and better communications.

Walpole-Nornalup Inlets Marine Park the first on the South Coast

The 100-hectare Walpole Inlet, the 1300-hectare Nornalup Inlet and the tidal parts of the Frankland, Deep and Walpole rivers are all zoned for recreation without any no-take areas. Recreational fishing is allowed in all areas under normal South Coast recreational fishing rules. The decision recognises that Marine Parks and recreational fishing can coexist where fishing is properly managed by fisheries management rules.

Marine Parks and restricted fishing areas in WA - a reference list

People often ask where to find an overview or a complete list of Marine Parks and restricted fishing areas in Western Australia. The information is spread all over and is very difficult to find even for people who know these topics. As a service from Recfishwest to help recreational fishermen and others locate the latest official information on these topics, a comprehensive reference list is now available on the Recfishwest website.
