Archived page, Fishing Clinics held for St Mary's Anglican Girl's School at Rottnest, May 2009
Kim Burton and Con Costa conducted three fishing clinics for St Mary's Anglican Girl's School on 14 May at the Army jetty, on Rottnest Island.
The weather was mild and sunny and the water was crystal clear. The three groups were very enthusiastic. A fair number had never fished before but after gazing into the clear waters and seeing, herring, skippy, flounder, blowies, enormous silver drummers, huge stingrays and lots of other small reef fish swimming around, all were very keen to learn how to bait a hook and cast their line.
One girl in particular showed great determination and patience and was rewarded with a fish. It didn't matter to her that it was a blowie, it was her first ever fish and she was ecstatic!
The girls elected not to keep any of the fish caught, instead releasing them using a wet rag minimising protective slime from being wiped off, removing the hook if possible and quickly and gently releasing the fish into the water.
It was evident that the girls had listened and retained what they had learned when prizes where handed out at the end of each clinic.
Following are a few photos taken during the clinic.
