Archived page, Proposed Montebello/Barrow Islands Marine Conservation Reserve

Recfishwest has considered the Sector Reference Group Update (May 2001) for the proposed Montebello Barrow Islands Marine Conservation Reserve.

At this stage our comment on the update is limited to the following:

That it is Recfishwest's view that if spatial controls (Zoning) are to be utilised then the area should be managed under the "marine park" reservation option rather than as the "marine management area" option since the former provides for greater flexibilities in meeting future zoning requirements.

That Recfishwest has, as yet, been unable to form a view on the suggested zoning scheme (draft spacial controls) detailed within the Sector Reference Group (SRG) update - Attachment 3. This is because SRG update provides no supporting rationale for the zones chosen or for their extent. We request that this augmenting information be provided with the next update, or earlier, if it is currently available.

Recfishwest believes that the zoning scheme must include priority recreational fishing zones. We would wish to have direct involvement in their design.
