Archived page, Submission Ningaloo Marine Park Extension Proposal
Submitted to the Department of Fisheries 22nd November 2001
Thank you for your letter (received 17 October 2001) advising of the review of the Ningaloo Marine Park Management Plan and seeking our views in relation to CALM's consideration of the possibility of extending the marine park boundaries.
It is Recfishwest's view that the proposal to consider extending the Ningaloo Marine Park boundaries is not appropriate at this present time. Currently there are a number of marine reserve planning processes underway or planned and proposals yet to be implemented.
Given this, Recfishwest believes that the Ningaloo Marine Park extension suggestion should be deferred at least until one or more marine reserves have been successfully established in WA under the new legislation.
We hope this view will be of assistance in developing your advice for the Minister for Fisheries.
