Archived page, Recfishwest, representing Western Australia's recreational fishers

Recfishwest is a representative body of dedicated and concerned anglers, which is independent of government and which represents the interests of all Western Australian recreational fishers at the local, state and federal level.

Recreational fishing is enjoyed by an estimated 643,000 people in WA each year. Recfishwest has the broad aims of promoting and advocating fishing for recreation and sport and as a source of food. One of Recfishwest's functions is to represent the needs of future generations of recreational fishers and to maintain access to their fair share of the State's fish stocks.

What is Recfishwest doing for you?

Everything Recfishwest does is aimed at the essential things enjoyable and successful recreational fishing depends on, such as:-

  • Healthy stocks of fish of all species, sizes and ages

  • Good environmental conditions so fish can survive and breed successfully

  • Recognition by everyone that regardless of what has been done before, the fish stocks always belong to the whole community, not just to any one group, and the community should decide how those fish are used and shared. Leading to:-

  • Recreational fishing having a guaranteed share of the fish which can be caught sustainably, sharing with commercial and other needs.

  • Reasonable and practical fishing rules which balance the enjoyment of fishing with the need to manage and share the catch and preserve the fish stocks.

  • Access to fishing spots, without unnecessary restrictions or closures which don't make sense.

Release Weight

About the release weight for returning fish affected by changes in water pressure

Recfishwest promotes the use of Garry Lilley's "Release Weight" for returning fish with over-inflated swim bladders to deep water.

These inexpensive devices are available to purchase from all major tackle stores, and are a must for all recreational boat fishers.

Recfishwest has prepared a DVD "Using the Release Weight to improve the survival of released fish". Proven best practice for releasing demersal reef fish.

The contents of this DVD can be viewed directly or downloaded and saved to view later from Recfishwest's Release Weight DVD page

This DVD will be provided to WA Tackle Shops to be given away FREE (while stocks last) with purchases of a Release Weight.
