[Home] [Updates] [Site map] [Quotes, Unclassified, Classified]
The following are previously unclassified quotes about the Bible, now classified under that heading, as a temporary intermediate step towards integrating them into my quotes pages proper.
"There is nothing in the use of the word `day,' by Moses, that requires it to be explained as invariably denoting a period of twenty-four hours; but much to forbid it. The following facts prove this. 1. Day means daylight, in distinction from darkness. Gen. 1:5,16,18. 2. Day means daylight and darkness together. Gen. 1:5. 3. Day mean the six days together. Gen. 2:4. The first day (Gen. 1:5) could not have been measured by the revolution of the sun around the earth, because this was not yet visible. The same variety in signification, is seen in the Mosaic use of the word `earth.' 1. Earth means the entire material universe. Gen. 1:1. 2. Earth means the solar, stellar, and planetary system. Gen. 1:2. 3. Earth means the dry land of the planet earth. Gen. 1:10. 4. Earth means the whole of the planet earth. Gen. 1:15, 17." (Shedd W.G.T., "Dogmatic Theology," [1888], Zondervan: Grand Rapids MI, 1969, Vol. I, reprint, p.476)
"You may recall the biblical story of the Tower of Babel according to which all people originally spoke one language, before the world's population fragmented into different language groups. If the reconstruction described above is correct, then, within the past 100,000 years we may have gone through events similar to those described in the story of the Tower of Babel: An original universal language becoming diversified into thousands of mutually incomprehensible languages. If so, all existing languages today-numbering about 6,000 might be descendants of a group of languages spoken within the past 100,000 years."
