[Home] [Updates] [Site map] [Quotes, Unclassified, Classified]
The following are previously unclassified quotes about Social, now classified under that heading, now classified under that heading, and under subheadings alphabetically by author and date, as a temporary intermediate step towards integrating them into my quotes pages proper.
"In these islands we are in the habit of regarding mankind as of one species, but a fortnight's steam will land us in a country where divines and savans, for once in agreement, vie with one another in loudness of assertion, if not in cogency of proof, that men are of different species; and, more particularly, that the species negro is so distinct from our own that the Ten Commandments have actually no reference to him." (Huxley T.H., "The Darwinian Hypothesis," Times, December 26, 1859, in Rhys E., ed., "Man's Place in Nature and Other Essays", [1863], Everyman's Library, J.M. Dent & Co: London, 1906, reprint, p.339)
