Calendar of Workdays and Meetings
The Friends of Baigup were formed in February 2001. There has been strong community interest in rehabilitating Baigup Reserve and this is reflected by the numbers of people who turn up to meetings and workdays.
Baigup is regionally significant wetland situated on the Swan River beside the Garrett Road Bridge. One of Perths early community conservation groups, Bayswater Greenwork, were active at Baigup during the 80s. The raised profile that they gave Baigup helped rescue the wetland from being seen as a highway route and future tip site to valued status it has today.

A serene escape from the surrounding city. Baigup has areas of outstanding beauty and ecological value |
An ongoing committment from the Ministry for Planning and the City of Bayswater have seen extensive rehabilitation work taking place at Baigup in the last five years including two new lakes being constructed. Extensive areas of exotic bulrushes, Typha orientalis, have been cleared and natural regeneration is taking place.
| Large areas of bulrushes and pampas grass present a major rehabilitation challenge. A lake has been constructed in the middle of this expanse of weeds to control weeds and increase waterbird habitat. | ![]() |
Take a walk along the dual use pathway that runs through Baigup. See the unaltered areas of rushes and flooded woodland, see the new lakes that are already attacting birds, see the areas that are currently being rehabilitated and then share the vision that the Friends of Baigup for the whole of the reserve.

View from the dual use pathway. Four years ago this area was choked with weeds. Now the native shore rush, Juncus kraussii, and swamp paperbarks, Melaleuca raphiophylla, create a harmonious natural view. |
