(c) 1994 "That's not good enough Dukat!", Sisko exclaimed to the viewscreen on his desk. "I'm sorry Commander but there's no official claim of responsibility involved here." "And what about _unofficial_!?" "Unofficially.......", Dukat lowered his voice a little to add, "It sounds like something the Obsidian Order might arrange. Central Command has no knowledge about Suttons' abduction. Trust me Commander, if they did then I'd know about it." "The Bajoran government won't be satisfied if that's going to be the reply from Cardassia." "There's nothing you or I can do in this matter Sisko. It's up to the diplomats now. From what I've been hearing it seems the matter is being used by the Bajorans to pressure the Cardassian government to get what they want in other areas anyway. In the end it'll all be settled and forgotten. For the meantime I suggest we let the negotiators do their jobs." Sisko sighed with dissatisfaction, "You're not thinking of paying a visit here to the station are you Dukat?" "No, why do you ask?" "I'd have liked to have seen you explaining this in person to the Ambassador himself." * ************************* * O'Reilly walked into Suttons Consulate office to find him busy viewing documents on his screen. Sutton looked up and O'Reilly asked, "You wanted to see me sir?" "Captain Wilsons' ship will be ready in a month, so you're leaving on the next transport." O'Reillys' eyes opened in surprise and Sutton sighed, "Look, you and I both know that you'll be far happier away from here, so lets just get it over and done with as soon as possible. You'll be helping to get the ship up and running so don't think I'm sending you off early to have a holiday." "But......you still need me here." "I'll be okay. The doctor says I'm to take things easy and so that means I won't be attending any trade conferences for awhile. Besides, I haven't got a ship anymore." O'Reilly smiled, "So it's all set for me then?" "You're on your way at 14:00. I've arranged with Starfleet for you to rendezvous with the USS Clarke. From there you're on your own." O'Reilly stepped forward and quietly said, "Ambassador,....I know things could have been better than they were but--" "Forget it, Mike. Just make sure I don't receive any complaints from Captain Wilson about your service on her ship." He stood up straight and replied, "I'll make sure that you don't sir." Sutton dismissed him with a wave of his hand and O'Reilly left with a big smile on his face. On his way out he met Kira entering the Consulate but she didn't give him a chance to say anything because of her haste. She entered Suttons without warning and exclaimed, "Just what the hell do you think you're doing!?" "Nerys, I--" "I went to the Infirmary and Doctor Bashir says that you were released to recuperate in your own quarters. Then I hear that you're in here working!" "I'm only doing--" "You're not doing _anything_. The doctor's given strict instructions for you to rest and I'm going to make sure you get that rest." Relen was in the doorway and added, "Ambassador, you really _do_ need your rest. Things are going along fine." Sutton frowned a little at Relen realising it must have been him who had told Kira. When he looked back to her she appeared like she wasn't about to budge unless she got what she wanted. Sutton stood up and sighed, "Okay, I'll leave things up to you Relen. But if there's any problems then--" "Then Relen can handle them.", said Kira cutting in. A commlink chiming in the outer office called Relen away and it gave Kira the chance to say privately, "Paul, I'm going to get you to rest even if it means I have to kill you to do it." He smiled but she frowned and added with seriousness, "You don't look too well." "It's nothing. Anyway, I'm just organising things so I _can_ rest for awhile." Kira slowly shook her head, "Can't you just let go,....at least for awhile?" Sutton didn't answer because Relen returned saying, "Excuse me sir but I've just been informed that Acting Minister Diora is here to see you." "Here? On the station?" "She's just arrived." "Did you know about her coming Relen?" "No sir. I just found out a few moments ago." Sutton sat back down and he sighed to Kira, "Something must be up for her to come here like this. Okay Relen, you'd better go and escort Diora here I suppose." Relen nodded then quickly walked out leaving Kira and Sutton looking at each other. He held out his hands and pleaded, "Look, I can't very well refuse to see her." "You don't care _what_ the doctor has said do you? You're just going to throw yourself back into your work." "Let's just see what Diora wants first shall we?" "And after that it'll be something else." "Nerys, I promise you that I'll get some rest." "And I'll be holding you to that promise." Diora appeared in the doorway with Relen and two of her aides behind her. She turned to them and said, "The Ambassador and I will be discussing matters in _private_." The others moved away but Kira stood as if on guard. Diora pointed to the doorway and ordered, "That means you too Major." Kira looked at Sutton and he gently nodded his head. As Kira slowly walked out, Diora narrowed her eyes at her and watched Kira leave until the door had closed. Diora sat down and said, "Your Major Kira looked like she was spoiling for a fight." "She's only looking out for my best interests." "Well so am I, and that's why I'm here." "Really?", Sutton replied with a touch of sarcasm. Diora looked at him for a short while and once again it had the effect of unnerving him. He was sure that she knew it did. But then Diora said in a more gentle voice, "I was concerned when I heard what had happened to you." He tried to figure out just where this might be heading but she mystified him. "You're going to need some rest.", Diora sighed. "So everyone keeps reminding me. Maybe I do but I don't think I should be stopping my work either." "I understand that. The work you do _is_ important." Sutton frowned because Diora seemed to be acting almost nice to him. She saw the change in him and sighed, "Alright, I'll get right to the point. The Minister insists you take time off to recuperate." "But what about my work?" "I'll take over during your leave." "Oh no you _won't_ Diora!", Sutton said loudly as he stood up to glare at her. She looked up at him and calmly answered, "Then tell me _who_ exactly do you think can do your work while you're resting?" "Relen perhaps..." "A mere clerk?", she shook her head and continued, "I know more than anyone of what you do. I'm the logical choice and the Minister himself thinks so too." "The Minister!? Don't tell me you've already convinced him that you're taking over my position because I'll--" "I've merely pointed out the facts to the Minister. The final decision of course lies with you." "Then I say, _no_." Diora still remained calm replying, "Sutton be reasonable. You require rest, but meetings and negotiations need to continue. I'm the ideal person to temporarily fill your role until you are well enough to return to your work." Sutton felt a little dizzy once more and he carefully sat down. Diora was quick to notice his state and she pressed on, "You really do need this rest Sutton. We both know it. You knew you needed a rest even before this incident with the Cardassians." He put his hands to his head and answered, "If I refuse, then what?" "I'm not going to try to force you into deciding anything. That would be pointless because I know how stubborn you are. You just need to see reason." "Reason....hah!" "Tell me.....who do you go to when you need advice?" He put his hands down and frowned but said nothing. "Is it Major Kira?" "It's none of your business." "Get some advice. If it's sensible then they'll tell you that you need to stand down to rest for awhile and let me handle the work for you." "_No_." "You're being very difficult." She stood up and added, "I have to see the Commander to deal with some official matters. In the meantime I suggest that you consider what I've offered. We are after all dealing with what's best for Bajor here." * ************************* * "She wants it _all_, Paul.", Kira said angrily, "You know it as much as I do." They sat at their table in QUARKS and Sutton merely held his glass of wine with both hands as he gazed into it. Kira continued, "Diora's never been one to miss an opportunity and she's using this situation to take over everything of yours." "You want to know something? I think she's right." "What!?" He looked at her and said, "I should have planned for something like this a long time ago. Perhaps I should have trained an assistant who I could trust to take over for me." "You're not seriously going to give in to her are you!?" "Diora knows a fair amount of what I do, not everything, but she knows enough to keep things going." He put his glass down and said quietly, "I thought I was okay but today in the office I felt......well, I went back to the Infirmary and the doctor told me what I needed to know." Kira frowned and Sutton continued, "I don't _want_ to hand things over to Diora but she's the only person who I can think of to do the job." Kira leaned forward and asked worriedly, "What did Bashir say to you?" Sutton smiled, "Never mind, Nerys. But it was enough for me to realise that maybe I shouldn't let my trade work dominate my life." Kira looked concerned and she asked forcefully, "What's wrong with you Paul,....tell me." "I've been having these.....dizzy spells and other problems. The doctor told me the medical terms for it but I can't remember what they are now. It's just that afterwards I got to thinking about things." "What things?" "What if you hadn't have gotten me out of that place Nerys?" "Look, you're going to be fine. Don't let this temporary illness give Diora the chance she needs to steal your work from you." Sutton held a hand to his head and Kira leaned forward to support him as she asked, "What's wrong!?" "It's nothing,.....well, maybe you could help me to my quarters." They'd gotten as far as the Promenade when Diora intercepted them before they had a chance to get into the turbolift. She asked bluntly, "Well Sutton, have you made your decision yet?" He looked at Diora and she seemed to him that she already knew what his answer would be. "Diora, this is only a temporary measure. At the most it'll be for a few weeks so don't start thinking that--" "That what? That I'll take your job away from you?" Kira replied, "That's _exactly_ what we think." Without even bothering to look at her, Diora answered, "Major, if I ever think that I need your opinion then I'll ask for it and not before." "Now just a minute!", Kira exclaimed. But Sutton held up his hand and Kira reluctantly fell silent. Diora's remark was not only meant to rile Kira but it was also meant to show Sutton just what Diora thought of her. Sutton calmly replied, "I'm going to give you three weeks Diora and not a moment longer. I'll be sending a personal communique to Minister Rennic stating that this arrangement is _only_ for three weeks." "I don't think three weeks is enough." "That's all your getting." "I meant it's not enough time for you to be rested fully." "Hah!", Kira exclaimed. This time Diora looked at her and asked, "Do you have something to say to me Major? Because if you do then I'd like to hear it." But Sutton stepped between the two of them and got Dioras' attention by stating, "I'll have my people keep Rennic appraised of your work. If at any time that I think it's necessary then I'll cut short this arrangement." "I'm going to need detailed histories of your past dealings, your contacts, and all other special information." "You'll get them tomorrow." "Tonight would be better." "Tomorrow I said." "I'm going to attend a trade conference on your behalf in four days time. I need that information _now_." "I'll see you in the morning." She frowned and said, "I'm doing this for _your_ benefit Sutton, and for Bajor." "Then may the Prophets grant you the patience you so desperately need Diora." Sutton nodded to her then took Kira's arm and led her straight into the turbolift without waiting for a response from Diora. After Sutton told the turbolift what level he wanted, Kira asked, "How the hell do you put up with that woman!?" He staggered against Kira and she worriedly asked, "Are you okay?" "Just dizzy again, that's all." "I should have given her a good piece of my mind!" "No you shouldn't Nerys. Diora isn't the kind of person you want to antagonise in any way. She'll make sure that you pay for it later." "I don't see _you_ playing it careful with her." "That's right and it's just the way I'll always be with her. She knows she can't touch me without harming herself so it's been a stand-off for most of the time. Please,....don't get involved with her, promise me that." They looked at each other and Kira reluctantly agreed, "Alright, I'll keep out of her way......for now." It was about as good an answer that he was going to get. When Suttons door opened and they stepped inside, Kira was amazed at the decor. As she helped him to a large lounge seat set against the wall, Kira looked all around at the many Bajoran artifacts and craftwork adorning the walls and floor. There was also a lot of everyday classical Bajoran items throughout the collection as well. It was the first time she'd been in Suttons quarters since he'd been made an Ambassador long ago and the change in its appearance was surprising. He saw her interest and he smiled, "Go on, have a look around if you like." As Kira wandered around the room, he used the replicator to get a glass of chilled water which he drank slowly hoping it would make him feel better. Kira asked somewhat puzzled, "What are all these things doing here Paul?" "They're just some items I was interested in that I came across during my land reclamation days." "You've got quite a collection here. Has anyone else seen it?" "No, it's personal Nerys. Each item means something to me." He saw her pick up an object and look at in silence for quite awhile, obviously deep in thought. "What have you got there?", he asked. She turned around and brought it over so he could see it. It was a simple carved wooded figurine of an animal, a small childs toy. Kira said quietly as she held it, "I had one just like it when I was very young." He put his hand on hers that held the carving and smiled, "Keep it Nerys." "Oh, I couldn't...." "Yes you can. Keep it to remind yourself of happier moments." She smiled at him and answered quietly, "Thank you." Sutton took his hand away and held it to his head saying, "I wish this damned dizziness would go away." She sat down with him and asked, "Is there something you're not telling me me Paul? And I want the truth this time." He sighed, "The doctor said that he found traces of a slow acting Cardassian poison in my system. It must have been given to me when I was unconscious on Terrell in case I somehow escaped." "But you're okay now, right?" "He neutralised the poison but it's had an effect on my system that'll take awhile to balance again." "So that's why you want this time off to rest?" He nodded, "I wasn't going to tell you because you'd only worry." "You're damned right I'd worry. And now I'm concerned about Diora." "Don't be. Leave her to me. I don't want you getting involved in her in any way." "I can take care of myself." "I know you can but all the same....." Kira sighed, "Well I suppose you know what you're doing. I can't imagine you throwing it all away when you've worked so hard at it." Sutton took a deep breath and he quietly said, "Nerys,.....I've been thinking....it's been a long time since I was on Bajor with time for myself...." "Say, that's a great idea. Get off the station and away from everything for awhile. I'm sure you'll feel better for it." "I....was rather hoping that you'd like to come with me Nerys." Kira's eyes widened and she replied in uncertainty, "I, uhhh....well I don't think I can get away from the station....there's....." Sutton looked away, "It's okay, forget I asked." He got up and walked unsteadily to the chairs out in the centre of the room then he sat down heavily into one. On the table was a pile of documents and a few PADD's that he began sorting through. Sutton picked up a PADD and began accessing it saying, "Maybe I'll stay right here. After all, there's all this work that has to be done as well as making sure that Diora has everything she needs over the next few weeks." Kira got up and walked over to say quietly, "Paul look, it's just that--" "It's okay,....really. I know how it might have looked the two of us going to Bajor together." "There's nothing stopping you from going by yourself." "You're right. I can just take all this stuff with me and do it there." She snatched the PADD from his hands and angrily said, "Paul, will you just be sensible!?" They looked at each other and he replied, "There were reasons why I wanted you to come with me Nerys. But perhaps the time isn't right yet." She frowned at him in puzzlement but he continued, "You just stay on the station and I'll go to Bajor alone. Now,......when you've finished with my PADD I have some work to do." She tossed it at him and then her commbadge chirped. Sisko's voice said, "-Major, I've just had my _second_ meeting with Acting Minister Diora today. Can you come down to Security please? There's some matters to discuss.-" "On my way." She looked down at Sutton and said, "I don't want you pushing yourself too hard Paul." But he ignored her and kept his eyes on his PADD. Kira turned and made her way out, but before she left, Kira quietly put back the figurine that she'd picked up earlier. * ************************* * Bashir administered the hypospray to Suttons arm as he said, "This should decrease the dizziness." "It won't get rid of it?" "If I was to use anything stronger then it would have worse side effects than the dizziness." Bashir down put the hypospray and began scanning Sutton with a tricorder saying, "I had Minister Diora in here yesterday asking about your health." "She's _Acting_ Minister.", Sutton said sharply. "Oh, sorry. You're right of course." "I hope you didn't tell her anything." "That would be a breach of doctor-patient confidentiality." "Good." "I also had Kira in here asking the same things." Sutton got off the medical couch replying, "And you said nothing,...right?" "Ambassador,....you don't have a life threatening condition so there's no need to divulge any details to others unless you authorise it." "Well I don't authorise it. I don't care who comes along asking, just keep details to yourself." Sutton sighed and added, "So,.....I'll be okay for the next week or two will I?" "I don't think you'll be having any more disorientation occurring. I expect you'll notice a marked increase in your general well-being quite soon. The dizzy spells should disappear in a few hours." "Okay, that's just what I need. I'll be going to Bajor and I'll be out of touch for awhile." "You shouldn't have any problems health-wise Ambassador, but I want you to take this......." Bashir put a hypogun and a small cartridge inside a case then snapped it shut saying, "This is a single dose shot of the medication I've just given you. Only use it if you absolutely need it." He handed it to Sutton who slipped it into a pocket while saying to the doctor, "I don't know what's worse,...the cure or the illness." "Believe me Ambassador, you'd be feeling a lot worse without the medication." Sutton nodded and then left the Infirmary making his way to the Bajoran Consulate nearby. When he entered the outer office he saw Relen look up with a sign of relief on his face. Sutton smiled, "I'm not back Relen, I'm only here to see Diora." "Working for her is......a challenging experience sir." "I know all about it. What sort of mood is she in?" "You mean she has more than one?" Sutton laughed, "Okay, I get the picture. Can I go in now?" Relen paged her, "Ambassador Sutton to see you Minister Diora." "-Send him in.-", was the reply. Sutton frowned, "She's _Acting_ Minister, Relen." "I'm only doing what I've been told sir." He nodded and went through the door into the inner office. Dioras desk, his own until this morning, was piled high with documents and PADD's. She looked up and said with a mixture of frustration and anger, "These records of yours are a mess!" He smiled, "How terribly unfortunate for you." Sutton sat down and looked around saying, "At least you haven't changed my office yet." "What were you thinking when you made these records Sutton!? If I hadn't been getting your reports in person then all this would be useless!" Sutton smiled a little wider and she glared, "You're _really_ enjoying this, aren't you!?" "Well what do you expect?" "I expect cooperation." "You asked for the job and now you've got it Diora." Shoving away some of the stuff in front of her, she sighed and shook her head. But then she looked back at Sutton to say, "I've obtained a Runabout from the Commander, so at least _that_ part is taken care of." "Lucky you." "The subject of an assigned pilot came up." Sutton smiled and she continued, "And so I'll be using one from the ministry." Suttons smile dropped and he asked, "You mean you haven't been assigned a Starfleet pilot?" This time it was Diora's turn to smile, "They just don't trust _you_ Sutton, that's all." He stood up and she added, "I was considering using your Major Kira for my pilot actually...." Sutton frowned and she smiled wider, "But I expect you need some company here and someone to run your little errands, don't you?" He answered flatly, "Don't get too used to things Diora, it's only for three weeks." "A lot can happen in three weeks." "What's that supposed to mean?" "Oh nothing. A lot can stay the same too. We'll just have to wait and see." He put his hands on the desk and said earnestly, "Diora, I want you to promise me that you're doing all this for the right reasons." "What other reasons would there be?" "Your own." She smiled, "You really are quite paranoid aren't you Sutton?" "Do I get your promise or not?" Diora became serious as she answered, "I don't need to promise you _anything_. You've put all these obstacles in my way and it's going to be an uphill battle for me. If you'd stop seeing me as your enemy then perhaps things would be better between us." Sutton looked away and didn't reply for awhile, but then he looked back into Dioras eyes and quietly said, "You'd better be doing the right thing Diora because otherwise...." She remained calm and replied, "Oh yes, you forget I know how dangerous Paul Sutton can be." "Tell me,....just how _did_ you find out about my past?" Diora turned her attention back to the piles of documents and replied, "That will be all Ambassador. Send Relen in on your way out." Sutton walked straight out of the Consulate and didn't say a word at all to Relen. * ** * Sutton stepped off the turbolift and into Ops. He met Kira at the Situation Table and asked, "Major, could you please tell the Commander that I wish to speak with him........._now_?" "Paul, there's something I--" "Just tell him please." Kira frowned and pressed a commlink to say, "Commander, Ambassador Sutton is here to see you." "-Alright, send him in.-" He marched up the steps and into Sisko's office before Kira could say another word. "Commander,....can you tell me why Diora is allowed the use of a Runabout and gets to choose her _own_ pilot!?" "Calm down Ambassador. Please,...take a seat." Sutton sighed and did so. "Firstly, the decision to assign you a Starfleet pilot was from higher up, it didn't come from me despite what you may think." "Alright, I'll accept that." "And Diora is a Minister that--" "She's _Acting_ Minister! Rennic hasn't stepped down yet!" "Nevertheless, for all intents and purposes she's performing as the Minister. I expect Starfleet sees that a little differently from an Ambassadors role." "Then tell me,....what's going to happen when I return to work? Do I get to choose my pilot?" "I'm afraid that's out of my hands. But I believe you've been assigned another pilot that---" "Tell me the truth Commander,....does the Federation trust me?" "Well,...I can only reply to that off the record Ambassador." "Alright then, off the record. Do they trust me or not?" "No." Sutton sighed, "Well at least I know where I stand now." "You don't leave much room for trust Ambassador." "I don't care. Look,....thanks for answering my question." Sisko sighed himself and leaned forward to reply, "You want to know something Ambassador? When you first came here I didn't like you at all. If it wasn't for Major Kira and others speaking up for you then I wouldn't have allowed you to set foot back on the station. A lot's happened since then but in all that time you still haven't given me good cause to trust you at all. I expect the Federation feels the same way." "Well you've got Diora to deal with now, at least for a short while. I recommend you keep a close watch on her." "And I'll be glad when those three weeks are over Ambassador, for _all_ our sakes." They stood up and Sisko added, "Ambassador, we may not see eye to eye but at least you're easier to get along with than Diora." Siskos' doors opened and Sutton stepped down to Kira who was waiting outside. He quietly said to her, "Look, I'm sorry about the other night. I've got a lot on my mind and sometimes I just forget who my friends are." Kira nodded, "That's what I was going to tell you,......I've decided to go with you to Bajor." They smiled and then Sutton said, "Oh,...there's one other thing....." He reached into his pocket and pulled out the little wooden Bajoran carving. Sutton gave it to her saying, "I think you forgot to take this with you." Kira took it with both hands and sighed, "Maybe we both forget who are friends are." * ************************* * Four bodies lay upon the floor of the ships bridge and the last of the crew was standing before the man responsible. "Jarvis.....listen, we can do a deal! You don't have to kill me!" But Jarvis kept his phaser levelled at the man and snarled, "You thought I wouldn't find out that you were setting me up did you?!" "I had nothing to do with it! It was all _their_ idea!" "You make a poor liar." "No I--" The phaser fired and the man fell down dead to join the rest of them on the floor. Jarvis smiled and sat down at the controls saying to himself, "You thought you had me again but everyone's underestimated me as usual. - Now,..... where am I going to go...." He brought up some displays on the screen but then he shook his head and frowned. Jarvis struck the console with both fists in frustration as he shouted, "There's got to be _somewhere_!" He thought for a few long moments and then smiled, "Of course! Maybe it's about time Sutton and I got to know each other again." * ************************* * Sutton entered Sisko's office and found him seated behind his desk, but there was also a young woman in a Starfleet uniform standing off to one side in the room. Sisko stood up and said, "Ambassador, before we have a repeat of the last occasion when you were assigned a pilot, why don't we say we approach this meeting in a more positive manner." Sutton smiled, "Commander, I can assure you that I'm quite....calm." Sisko nodded, "Your replacement Runabout is due in fourteen days but as you can see, your pilot is here a little earlier than expected." Sutton looked at her and she said smartly, "Lieutenant Zoe Anderson at your service sir." He appraised her for a moment and then turned back to Sisko asking, "I suppose there's no way of getting a Runabout without a Starfleet pilot?" "You make it sound like such an imposition." "Yes, well it is to me." Sutton turned back to Anderson and frowned, "Well Lieutenant, why don't _you_ tell me why I should accept you." "Permission to speak freely sir?" He nodded and she replied, "Because I'm the best damn pilot you're going to have." "Lieutenant!", Sisko exclaimed, but Sisko raised his hand up and smiled, "No Commander, it's alright." Sutton looked back at Anderson and asked, "What makes you so different from any of the other pilots that Starfleet must've lined up to keep an eye on me?" She ignored the slight insult and replied, "If you care to look through my record sir, you'll see that I've given exemplary service in all my postings. My pilot proficiency rating is in the top ten percent and I've been involved in several combat engagements which each ended in favourable outcomes." He nodded, "That may very well be, but how have you found yourself to be way out here ready to assume a position that the last pilot nearly died of boredom from?" "Because I _asked_ for this position sir." "Really?, Sutton replied with a doubtful voice. Sisko frowned, "Ambassador, I think that--" "Commander, I'll accept Lieutenant Anderson,.....at least for the time being. You already know what I'd choose if I had my own way, but I don't. So why don't we just leave it at that." "Well, I must say that for a change you're being quite reasonable about things." Sutton smiled, "Don't get used to it Commander. It's not something that I intend to be for the sake of Starfleet or the Federation." "I'll keep that in mind." Sutton turned to Anderson and said, "I'll see you in my Consulate office in an hour Lieutenant. I have some things to attend to first." "Thank you sir." Sutton quickly left and Sisko said forcefully, "Lieutenant, I don't know what sort of training you've had for diplomatic duty but I'd suggest you show a little more discipline in your replies. You may be the Ambassadors pilot but you're still in Starfleet and are always representing it. - Is that clear?" "_Quite_ clear sir." * *** * Precisely one hour later, Relens' voice on the commlink said, "-A Lieutenant Anderson is here to see you sir.-" "Send her right in." Anderson entered Suttons office and she found him looking closely at a PADD that he held in his hands. "Have a seat Lieutenant." As she sat down Sutton said, "I've been going through your record. You didn't tell me that you received a commendation for one of those combat engagements." "If I had, I think you would have thought that I was boasting about it sir." He nodded, "Yes,.....you're probably right." Sutton put down the PADD and sighed, "Let's just put aside all the formalities Anderson and get straight down to it. You're no doubt aware that I don't like the way the Federation forces a Starfleet pilot onto me in exchange for the use of a Runabout." She nodded. "Earlier on you said that you _asked_ for this position. I want to know why. I've read what it says here but I want to hear it from you." "You've probably thought that it doesn't add up." "That's exactly what I was thinking." "I'm very interested in _you_ Ambassador." Sutton smiled, "Let me tell you something. Long ago when I first started working on the station, the Bajoran government placed someone here to spy on me. I can assure you that I didn't like that at all. So Anderson,....are you just a spy for the Federation?" "I'm not a spy." "That's the answer I was expecting." "It's the truth." "Is it?" Anderson frowned, "Whether you believe it or not, it _is_ the truth. You'll find me quite honest with you Ambassador." "People being honest,......well, that _would_ make a change for me I must say." "Sir, if you don't like me or want me as your pilot then just say so." "Tell me Anderson, what do you find so interesting that you pushed ahead of the others to get this position?" "I'm interested in why a man would work so hard to help someone like the Bajorans while condemning the Federation for trying to do the same thing." Sutton laughed, "Is that your own view or the Federations official line?" "Does it matter." "The Federation and I don't view things in the same light I expect. You'll probably see that for yourself. Anyway,.....I'd like you to honestly answer a question,.......does the Federation trust me?" She looked at him for a few seconds and then replied, "No sir, they don't." When Sutton smiled she asked, "Is that amusing?" "No, but it confirms what someone else had already told me. Not to worry though, I'm sure the Federation doesn't trust a lot of people." Sutton sighed, "So you say you're not here to spy on me...." "Sir, I'm not saying that I won't be writing out reports and passing them on, but you have my word that they'll only be operational matters." He smiled, "'Operational Matters',....what a pleasant term they're calling it nowadays." She was about to reply when Sutton held up his hand and smiled wider, "It's okay Anderson. I can see it from their point of view too you know." He sat back and said, "I like you Anderson. You're not scared to say what's on your mind. I hope you and I get along better than your predecessor did." Sutton stood up and asked, "Have you been assigned your quarters yet?" "Yes sir." "I suppose you've been briefed on the general routine of being my pilot?" "Yes sir, I've been well briefed." "I bet you have. At the moment Acting Minister Diora is currently filling in my duties while I'm on.....'leave' as it were, so that means your services won't be required until I resume my work again. Actually we're lucky she's not on the station right now or else we wouldn't be in here. And that's one more thing I have to tell you,.....please don't get in Diora's way, Lieutenant." "I'll keep that in mind sir." "Alright Lieutenant, you can leave. I'll contact you if I need you. In the meantime I'd like you look around the station and get to know what DS9 is really like for yourself rather than relying on anything you've been told about in your briefings." She stood up and he asked quietly, "Oh, there's one last thing Anderson....." "Yes sir?" "I see by your record that your parents were killed by......'raiders' it says." "They were....._we_ were colonists on a new Federation world." "And you also had a sister?" "My sister and I escaped. When we grew up we both joined Starfleet. She volunteered for an advance colonist team sent to a new world......but I never heard from her again." "It said that no trace was ever found of her or the rest of the team." She nodded and looked a little saddened. "Tell me,....how does all this make you feel?" "Lonely,......sometimes I feel lonely sir." Sutton nodded, "Okay, that's all." Anderson nodded and walked out leaving Sutton to look further through her record. * ************************* * "You're falling asleep!", Dax whispered loudly into Suttons ear. He woke up with a start at his table in QUARKS and turned to see Dax smiling beside him. He frowned, "Don't sneak up on me like that Jadzia." She sat down opposite him and laughed, "Or what? You'll throw me to the floor with one of your personal combat moves?" Sutton rubbed his shoulder, "You know, this _still_ hurts sometimes." Dax smiled, "Then you should get Kira to rub it for you.", then she added, "Besides, it's probably all in your head. I know Julian and he would've fixed your shoulder by now." "What are you doing here anyway?" "So, I'm not allowed to sit down with you now am I?", she joked. "You know you're always very welcome to join me anytime you like Jadzia." They looked into each others eyes and they both smiled. Dax said, "Kira asked me to tell you that she'll be a little late." "Is that all?" "Maybe she thinks you might want to spend some time with that new pilot of yours." "Be serious.", he frowned. "Oh, but I am.", she smiled, "You were pretty quick in accepting her I heard." "Anderson's a competent pilot and I like her." "That's what I thought. It's probably what Kira thought too." "Can we change the subject please?" "Alright then,....when are you going back to work?" "A few weeks." "I don't think you want to let someone like Diora get too used to doing your job. She may not want to give it up." "I know what I'm doing. Why does everyone keep telling me the obvious?" "What's Minister Rennics' views on all of this?" He leaned closer onto the table, "Jadzia,.....if I didn't know better I'd say that you were fishing for information." She too leaned on the table and smiled, "Is there _anything_ you've ever told me that you didn't want me to know?" He grinned, "I have to be careful with you." "Me!?" "To answer your question, Rennic just wants me to rest. I've informed him that I've relented to have Diora in charge for three weeks but not for any longer." Sutton sighed and added, "He's not a well man Jadzia. I saw that for myself when I contacted him." Dax was looking at him with a strange gaze and a happy smile on her face. He was puzzled and she knew it,...and he also knew that Dax was enjoying it. She said quietly, "You never did ask me what that favour was that I wanted so long ago for helping you with Kira." Realisation came to his face and he said, "What did you want?" "It was nothing really, just an answer to a simple question." "And what was the question?" She looked at him for a short while and smiled, "Why are you so interested in Kira?" Sutton smiled wide and thought for a few moments before answering very quietly, "Perhaps it's because she reminds me of myself." "You know something? I think that's the first honest answer I've ever got from you so easily." They smiled to each other and then Dax looked away and said, "Oh, here's Kira now." Kira walked up and said to Sutton, "Sorry I'm late. I've arranged it so I'll be escorting you on Bajor. We'll be leaving tomorrow as we agreed." Dax smiled wide, "Are you two going on a _holiday_ together?" "It's not a holiday.", Sutton and Kira said as one. Then they looked at each other surprised with their unified response. "It sure sounds like a holiday to me.", Dax grinned. Kira frowned, "Well it's not. Paul's on medical advice to take it easy and I'm there to make sure that he does." But Dax just sat there and kept smiling. "C'mon Dax, you know what Paul's like! As soon as he thinks he can get away with it he'll be back into his work pushing himself before he's recovered properly." "Let me get this straight, Paul's going to Bajor to rest and,.....you'll just be watching him?" "That's it. It sounds pretty straight forward to me." "Not a holiday?" "Nothing like a holiday." "How terribly boring for the both of you." Sutton nodded, "We like boring don't we Nerys?" Dax stood up and smiled, "I'm sorry, I'm keeping you two from your dinner engagement." Kira took her seat and offered, "You're welcome to join us." "Oh no, I don't think so.", then Dax bent down, patted both their hands and smiled, "I wouldn't want to interrupt a perfectly _boring_ dinner for the two of you. - Goodnight." As Dax walked off, Kira frowned at Sutton, "Just what have you been saying to her?" "Nothing. You know what Dax is like.", he smiled. "Well........" Sutton looked down at the lower level of QUARKS so he could find someone to serve them and then he saw Anderson sitting down at a table having a drink with a couple of station personnel. Kira followed Suttons gaze and said, "She's certainly fitting in better than O'Reilly." "She's quite keen." "A bit _too_ keen if you ask me." They looked at each other and Kira said quietly, "I"m beginning to think that going to Bajor with you isn't such a good idea after all. I mean, just look at the way that Dax took the news." He sighed and replied in earnest, "Nerys, I really want you to come with me. I wouldn't have asked you otherwise. But if you're worried about gossip....." "Well this _is_ an official task that I'll be doing......watching over you I mean." "That's right." "This isn't a date or anything." "Of course not." "And we'll be staying at...." "I'll be staying at my home and you'll have a room at the towns hostel nearby." "This home of yours, what's it like?" "Nothing grand I can assure you. Just a small, plain, simple home." "Well,.....I can see for myself tomorrow then." He nodded and asked, "So,....are you ready for dinner now?" "Paul, if you take any work down with us then I promise you that I'll get it and burn it." "No work. You have my word." "We're taking a Runabout aren't we?" "Nerys...." "Well somebody's got to fly us there because we can't have a Runabout sitting in orbit for--" "Lieutenant Anderson will take us there and bring the Runabout back.", then he added with a smile, "Or I could always ask Dax if you prefer." Kira stood up and said, "I'll think I'll have an early night after all. I'll see you in the morning." "Are you sure you won't stay for a drink or...." "No, that's okay. I'll be alright. - Goodnight." He nodded and watched her go wondering what was going through her mind. Sutton tapped his commbadge and said, "Ambassador Sutton to Anderson...." "-Anderson here.-" "I'd like you to fly a Runabout for me tomorrow. I'll be going to Bajor with Major Kira. You'll be returning with the ship to the station after dropping us off." "-Yes sir. Anything else?-" "Just don't get too carried away in QUARKS. He's got a bit of a reputation you know." Anderson looked around from where she was sitting and then she spotted Sutton looking at her from the upper level. She smiled and replied, "-I told you sir, I've been well briefed.-" He signed off with a wave of his hand to Anderson and then walked out of QUARKS. The young Starfleet officer sitting across from her leaned forward and asked, "So tell us,...what's the Ambassador _really_ like?" * ************************* * As Sutton finished giving Anderson their destination coordinates, Kira entered the Runabout. Sutton smiled, "You know something Nerys? This really is the first time I've seen you in anything but a uniform since I've known you." She put down her shoulder bag and commented, "I see you're not dressed to impress the townspeople." He looked down at himself replying, "I don't usually get to wear these clothes too often. They're the ones I wore during the land reclamation days. You're not saying that these Bajoran clothes don't suit me are you?" Kira smiled and sat down in the co-pilots chair saying, "Paul, if it wasn't for your nose, I could probably mistake you for one of the locals." He laughed and said to Anderson, "_That_ Lieutenant is probably the closest thing I'm liable to get from her as a compliment on my dress sense. - Alright, let's get going." As the Runabout sped towards Bajor, Sutton turned to Kira and asked, "Do you think that I could name the Runabout that I'll be getting?" "You'd better ask Sisko about it. Why, what did you have in mind?" "I was thinking perhaps.......the Tas'lorem." "Sky of Stars?", Kira replied. Then she explained to Anderson, "It's from an old Bajoran tale." "Is it something I should read?" Sutton replied, "I don't think old Bajoran stories would be quite your taste." She smiled, "Oh, you'd be surprised at what intrigues me sir." Kira frowned. Sutton asked Anderson, "So, how are you finding life on DS9?" "It's......interesting." "You seem to find a lot of things that interest you Lieutenant." "Sir, I was wondering.....after I transported you and the Major, would it be alright if I could visit Bajor on my own and get to know what it's like?" Kiras' eyes met Suttons and he knew that Kira was thinking that she didn't want Anderson tagging along for any reason. "I'm sorry Lieutenant,", he replied, "perhaps another time. The priority is to get the Runabout back to the station. With Diora using one and the loss of the Colorado, things are a little more....'restrictive' than usual." "I understand sir." Sutton smiled, "I tell you what,....when you get back, you might want to ask Lieutenant Dax to show you how she handles a Mahren fighting stick. Just don't believe any of the stories she might tell you." * ************************* * Kira and Sutton beamed down in front of a small fountain on the outskirts of the town but they weren't noticed by anyone except for a few children who ran off laughing and playing. As they began walking towards the town centre, Kira asked him, "I've always wondered why you've got your home out here and not in a city." "It's because I like the quieter life and the ways of the people. I suppose it keeps me more in touch." Some passers-by noticed them and came over. A man politely said, "Ambassador Sutton, it's good to see you again." Sutton nodded and a woman remarked, "You must be a busy man, you haven't been here for months." Another man spoke up, "Didn't you hear!? The Ambassador was kidnapped by Cardassians!" The woman looked shocked and she quickly said, "Ambassador I didn't know!" Sutton smiled and held up his hands at the growing crowd saying, "All is well I assure you. I'm here for some rest. We have to be going so please excuse us. May the Prophets guide you all." As they walked, other people greeted Sutton in a friendly manner and so Kira asked, "I don't suppose you get much privacy here do you?" "Actually I _do_ Nerys. It's just that I haven't been here for awhile and I expect the news about my abduction has got around." They made their way along until they came upon a house apart from all the others nestled amongst some large old trees. Sutton opened the door and Kira followed him inside. It was obvious that the house had been cared for in Suttons absence because it was clean and airy. Kira had been surprised at how Suttons quarters on DS9 had been arranged with Bajoran artifacts, but here in his house she saw that he'd also followed his desire in collecting Bajoran things. It was less of a museum and more like the proud display of which it was. Once again Sutton saw Kiras interest and he smiled, "You're welcome to look around, I've just got some things to check." As she slowly took her time wandering around looking at the many items, he went into the kitchen area to inspect what food provisions there were. When he came back, he found Kira looking through a large old book sitting in a pile with many others. She looked up and asked, "All these Bajoran books are very old. How did you come by them?" "Vedek Meeras got them for me. I don't really own them. Think of it more as an extended loan. I've been using them a lot in my research and they've helped me quite a bit." "I've been meaning to ask you......how did you and Meeras get to know each other?" He smiled, "It's a long story." "We've got plenty of time for long stories." "Remind me to tell you about it later then because at the moment I'd like to get something from the market for our dinner tonight." "_You're_ cooking dinner!?" "What's wrong with that? Maybe my cooking's not the best but at least I've finally gotten the hang of making good Korab Soup." She smiled, "You never told me about that before." Sutton smiled back, "My life isn't just all trade negotiations and research you know." Sutton was recognised by most of the market sellers as they walked amongst the busy stalls and he was greeted amiably. As they looked over some vegetables, a man approached him from behind and said aloud, "Ambassador, it's good to have you back again." The turned around and Kira saw that it was the towns leader. "It's good to be back, Taram.", Sutton smiled. Kira politely nodded to Taram and he asked Sutton, "I heard that you're here for rest. I must say that when we learnt about your kidnapping by the Cardassians we feared the worst. I'm glad to see that you are alright. You,...._are_ well I take it?" "I'm okay. Nothing that some time on Bajor won't fix. May I introduce Major Kira Nerys, Bajoran Liaison officer for DS9..." Taram smiled, "Ahhhhh, _now_ I can see why the Ambassador spends so much time on the station!" She smiled and Sutton replied, "Yes, Nerys is the _real_ reason why I'm there so much." She looked at Sutton in surprise, amazed at this apparent public admission. He smiled at her then turned back to Taram adding, "And of course my work for the Bajoran people is very important to me too." "Of course. Now,.....if there's anything I can do for you during your stay, don't hesitate to contact me. - May the Prophets grant us all the rest to enjoy our peace when we need it." They nodded and Taram moved off. Sutton turned back to the stall vendor and chose two handfuls of large Korab stalks. As he reached into his pocket, the vendor smiled, "No Ambassador, please take these with my thanks. Without you there would _be_ no crops to harvest." Sutton smiled and nodded politely before moving off with Kira by his side. Once they cleared the busy market Kira said, "You're very well respected here I see." Sutton didn't answer but simply smiled and gave her half the awkward Korab stalks to help carry. She asked quietly and with a little hesitation, "So tell me,.....what you said to Taram,.....is that true?...I mean about me." He was about to reply when a womans voice called out to him in a friendly way. They stopped and turned around to see a beautiful young woman waving to Sutton. She came running up and kissed Sutton hard before smiling, "I hope you weren't trying to avoid me Paul!" Kira looked on with a mixture of emotions as she watched them still clinging tightly to each other with the Korab stalks now on the ground by their feet. Sutton pushed her gently away from him and smiled as he introduced her by saying, "Kira Nerys, this is Teala Arlim." Arlim softly exclaimed, "_This_ is Kira?" Kira stood there impassively without replying. She looked awkward holding the large Korab stalks against herself. Sutton continued, "When I was originally in this area doing land reclamation work, I stayed with Arlim and her family. Her father is also the caretaker of my house." "I see.", Kira replied quietly. Arlim said enthusiastically to Sutton, "Will you be visiting our farm? You said you would when you next came back!" "Okay I'll--" "For dinner? _Please_ say you'll come! I've _really_ missed you!" He looked at Kira and Arlim added quickly, "I suppose we can set place for _two_ more at our table if you want." Kira was about to say something but he turned back to Arlim and smiled, "We'll be there. Is dinner still at the usual time?" "Yes!", then Arlim embraced him and kissed Sutton hard once more before running off laughing, "Don't be late!" When Sutton turned back to Kira, she threw her Korab stalks at his feet and growled, "Carry them yourself!" Then she walked off briskly leaving him to hurriedly pick up the Korab from the ground. "Nerys, wait!", he shouted running to catch her up as stalks fell from his grasp. Sutton put an arm in front of her saying, "Nerys, will you just stop for a second!?" She stopped and he sighed, "Look, I'm sorry. If you'd rather not go tonight then--" Kira brushed past his arm and started walking again. Sutton caught up with Kira once more but this time he stood in front of her to say, "Let's just sit over here and talk,......_please_ Nerys." She looked at him in indignation and Sutton walked over to a seat under some trees and put the remainder of the Korab stalks to one side. Kira looked to be debating with herself whether to join him or not but then she took a deep breath and made her decision. She sat down beside him but looked away into the distance. Kira wasn't about to begin the conversation so Sutton began, "I've known Arlim and her family for quite awhile. It was at their farm that I stayed while I was in this area until I got my own home here. After I'd travelled across Bajor setting up the other land reclamation projects, I returned here because........well because I liked this area and the people." Kira remained very quiet. "I suppose Arlim looked up to me then as she does now but I can assure you that we never had a 'relationship' or anything like that." She turned to regard him coldly before standing up saying, "I'll be at the hostel. If you still really want me to go with you to that dinner then you can call in and ask for me. If not, then don't bother." Kira angrily walked off and Sutton knew better than to try to call her back. He sat back and sighed watching her until she was lost from his sight, then Sutton got up and set about retrieving all the Korab stalks scattered across the ground. * **** * It was much later when he entered the town hostel and asked the owner, a grizzled old man who strangely regarded Sutton with indifference, if he would let Kira know he was there. A short while later Kira appeared. She still looked angry and Kira simply said, "Lets go." As they walked together alone on a road out from the town and into the countryside, the tension between then grew until Sutton asked, "Nerys, is there something I--" "_Don't_ say _anything_. - I'll be pleasant to your friends but don't expect me to enjoy myself." "It's Arlim isn't it?" But Kira remained silent as they kept walking. "Believe me Nerys, _nothing_ has ever happened between us. I don't see why you're--" She suddenly turned around and began walking back to the town shouting, "Tell them I wasn't feeling very well, tell them anything you damn well like!" He ran after Kira, got in front of her and then with both hands upon Kiras' shoulders he stopped her. "Let go of me.", she said in a quiet but very threatening tone. "Nerys, you're being a fool!" "What!?" "Do you honestly think that if I'd had any relationship with Arlim that I wouldn't tell you!?" She knocked his hands from her shoulders but stood and listened to him. Sutton pleaded, "You _know_ me, Nerys! I would never deceive you." "Why!? Why wouldn't you lie to me!? - Oh I know you have a reputation for being honest and forthright but why wouldn't you ever lie to me!?" He quickly but gently kissed her lips. When they parted, Kira looked surprised. "What was that for?", she quietly asked as she gently touching her lips with her fingertips. Sutton smiled, "I think you know. Now,....are you coming with me?" "And if I say no?" He sighed, "Please don't put me in a position to decide between my friends and......" "And what?" "And _you_ Nerys." "You don't consider me a friend?" "You're more than a friend to me,...._much_ more. I think you've known that for a long time." She looked out across the countryside and replied, "And this Arlim..." "Is just a friend." She looked back to him, crossed her arms and frowned, "Don't play games with me Paul." "I'm not, I promise you." "So tell me where we stand then?" He smiled and gently put his hand on her arm saying, "I was rather hoping that you'd tell _me_." There were some long seconds of absolute silence as Kira considered her thoughts. Then she quietly replied, "Let's go. We don't want to be late." * ** * When the door of the Tealan home opened, it was the father of the household who clapped a hand on Suttons shoulder and smiled, "Come in, come in!" They entered and found themselves greeted with the various aromas of Bajoran cooking. The wife came into the room from an outside door and she said in surprise, "Oh, they've arrived!", then she shot to her husband, "I hope you've been tending to the Tansa beans!" "Yes I have, now come here and welcome our guests." The woman came up and hugged Sutton then stood back as he introduced them all by saying, "Kira Nerys, this is Marek and his charming wife, Elorn." They all politely nodded to each other and Elorn said to Kira, "Paul has talked a great deal about you. It's good that we finally meet." Marek laughed, "I hope you're keeping an eye on him up there for us all." Kira just smiled and glanced at Sutton wondering just what he might have said to them about her. Two young woman came running in from outside. Kira saw that one was Arlim and the other was younger by a couple of years. Arlim ran up to Sutton and hugged him tightly whilst Kira took a couple of steps to distance himself from her. The other young woman waited for Arlim to move so she too could hug Sutton mightily. Marek smiled, "This is Zeline, our younger daughter, and Arlim who I believe you've already met." Zeline asked Kira eagerly, "You're a Major, right?" Kira smiled, "That's right." But Marek cut in saying, "We won't be standing on any titles in this house. Here it's just Nerys and Paul. Now,...why don't the two of you take Paul outside and show him Zeline's new Gremor." The two sisters each took one of Suttons hands and noisily led him outside, almost dragging him away in their haste. Elorn motioned for them to go into the kitchen area and as she tended the pots of food she smiled, "Don't mind our daughters. They haven't seen Paul in quite awhile." Marek sensed some unease from Kira and he added, "He's been like an older brother to them and he's filled the place of our son." "Your son?", Kira asked. "He was killed during the Occupation. Faross was in the Resistance." Kira became quite interested and so she asked, "I'm sorry he was killed. Do you know in what circumstances he died?" Elorn said proudly, "He died bravely defending a family from Cardassian retribution. They got safely away because of him. Faross is remembered with honour." Kira nodded and said no more on the matter, not wishing to intrude on what was obviously a painful memory. The other three returned from outside laughing and tripping over each other before Marek clapped his hands saying, "Please! Let's have some order here! Now, be seated for dinner." Kira couldn't help but smile because for a few moments there she'd seen Sutton acting like any other person having fun, and it was quite a contrast to his normal restrained Ambassadorial figure that she normally saw. Sutton looked at Kira and he smiled in a slightly embarrassed way before her. Marek would sit at the head of the table whilst Sutton and Zeline sat on the other side from Kira and Arlim. Kira would have preferred not to have been seated next to her but that's just the way it was. Elorn served up the dinner with Marek helping her until soon they were all sitting down with a table full of steaming food and plates well stocked. A bottle of Dal'th wine was put on the table with several glasses. As Kira watched Sutton taking a sip from his, she smiled a little realising that his fondness for dinners and wine had probably grown from being here at the Tealan household. They began eating and Kira was impressed by the food. Elorn saw her reaction and smiled, "Those food replicators up there, are they as good as this?" Kira smiled back, "No, but you get used to it. I'd almost forgotten what good home-cooked food tasted like." Marek laughed, "Paul always said that Elorns' Korab soup was the best." Sutton nodded, "Actually I was going to make some tonight before Arlim met up with us today. Of course it wouldn't be _quite_ as good as Elorns...." They laughed and Zeline said eagerly to Sutton, "I think Arlim may have something to tell you!" "Zeline!", Arlim exclaimed, "I was going to tell him _later_!" Arlim turned to Sutton and announced, "I've been accepted into the Starfleet Academy!" Kira saw Sutton hesitate for a moment but then he smiled, "Congratulations. But.....I thought you were going to apply to join Bajors space force?" "I changed my mind. One day I hope to be the first Bajoran Captain in Starfleet!" "Well, that _would_ be something to see.", Sutton smiled. Zeline smiled to Kira, "_I'm_ going to join the Bajoran space force. I want to explore the Gamma Quadrant." Kira smiled back, "It's not all that friendly out there in places." Marek laughed once more, "Our daughters know how to take care of themselves! - I must admit though when Arlim changed her mind it was a bit of a surprise, but I know that she'll do well." Sutton said seriously to Arlim, "I'm proud of you." "You said you'd always help me if I asked but I'm glad I got there on my own." "You know it won't be easy." "Of course I know that but I'll make everyone proud of me,... you'll see." Sutton smiled, "I believe that you will, Arlim." Marek turned to Kira and asked, "How do you think the Federation considers Bajor now?" Kira was glad of the opportunity to speak and so she replied, "They _know_ we've become stronger and independent. But they also know that we've got a long way to go. A partnership with the Federation wouldn't be a bad thing just as long as we were in control of ourselves and weren't told what to do. If we join the Federation then that means we must accept Federation laws and rules. I've found that they can be quite.....'confining' in what needs to be done sometimes." Arlim said, "I sometimes think the Federation has a narrow view when it comes to Bajor and Bajorans. I'll be helping to change that I hope." Kira nodded and then realised that she was beginning to like Arlim despite her earlier feelings. Marek turned to Sutton and smiled, "And what of any future plans _you_ may have for Bajor?" "Me? - I haven't any plans." Marek laughed, "Oh come now!" Sutton put his hands on the table palms up saying, "Bajor is in the Hands of the Prophets." Marek smiled, "Yes, but I think the Prophets will guide you as they have already done so in the past." When the meal was finished, they all helped to clean up whilst discussing everything from Bajors future to the ways on how to properly care for a sick Gremor. They retired to sitting outside to watch the last of the days light disappearing. Then the stars came out with Bajors moons shining brightly in the night sky. Zeline and Arlim sat on each side of Sutton, and Zeline asked him, "You've made a lot of trips through the Wormhole. Is it as spectacular to you now as the first time you went through?" He nodded, "It's always a sight to see." Elorn asked, "What of the worlds beyond? Are they as wondrous as we have heard?" "Some are, but you must remember that the Gamma Quadrant is very large. Exploration is still a major interest. The work I do in negotiating trade agreements and promoting Bajor's goodwill is also very important for allowing ships through their areas of space." Arlim asked, "Is that all you do?" He smiled, "I've even been called upon to mediate between separate trading blocks. I hope I've done my diplomatic best in those cases, although I must admit that it can be very trying at times. There's occasions where I'd just like to walk out if I could." Zeline asked, "And do you? Walk out?" Sutton smiled a little wider, "That wouldn't be fair now, would it?" Marek asked, "Then why do you continue?" "Look at Bajor. It's been revived and is growing back to what it used to be before the Occupation. I'd like to see Bajor as it was before I'm done." Elorn wondered, "In the meantime you're here for some rest. Do you intend to do anything while you're in Neeshar?" "I was hoping to take Nerys to see the ruins." "What ruins?", Kira asked. "There's just some ancient ruins in the area. I've been there many times. We can go there tomorrow.......that's if you _want_ to go." She frowned, "You're supposed to be _resting_." "Well....if you come along, then you can keep an eye on me." Kira slowly smiled, "We'll see." Marek stood up and said to Sutton, "I almost forgot.......another box arrived for you here a week ago. I'm sorry, but with all that's been happening lately I forgot to inform you. I hope you'll accept my apologies." Sutton also stood up and he smiled, "That's okay, just as long as it's here. It contains some stuff that I can use tomorrow. Will it be okay to leave it here and pick it up then?" "It's in the storehouse." Sutton nodded and Marek smiled, "I think perhaps you should get an early nights rest if you intend going out there. - It was good to see you again Paul." Zeline rushed up and hugged Sutton saying, "You're not going _already_!?" He laughed, "I have to or else Nerys will give a bad report of me to the doctor." Kira simply smiled in silence. Zeline let go of him and Arlim stepped in to hug Sutton, then she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. Kira noted that it was certainly a lot less a show of affection that she'd witnessed in town. Arlim said quietly, "This may be the last time I see you before I leave for the Academy on Earth." Sutton hugged her tightly and then they parted. Then it was Elorns turn to hug him and she said, "May the Prophets watch over you." Kira and Sutton finally left while the Tealan household waved them goodbye as they walked off into the night. Once they were in the open road in the moonslight, Kira asked, "Why didn't you ever tell me about the Tealans?" "I would have if you'd asked. I suspect there's a lot of things that I don't know about you either, Nerys." "They're.........like your family here, aren't they?" He didn't reply but Kira saw him smile. They walked a bit further in silence until she said quietly, "You were right. I was being a fool." "Don't say that." She laughed, "Why, would you rather say it for me?" He smiled, "It's not something that I would risk saying to you too often." They walked further onwards and he quietly asked, "Nerys....how long have you known me?" "It seems like just about forever lately.", she smiled. "And in that time have I ever let you down?" "In what way?" "In my......relationship with you." "Relationship? What do you mean by that?" He smiled because Kira was being playfully difficult with him. It had often been the way of their friendly arguments in the time he'd known her. But this time they both knew the discussion was along more personal lines. He asked, "Do you like the time we spend together, on duty and off?" "I would have to say....yes, to that one." "I've enjoyed every moment of your company." Kira smiled, "Some people don't like to stand in the same _room_ with me. I can be.....difficult to get along with at times....." "But _we_ get along well together, don't we Nerys?" "I suppose so....." Kira turned to him as they walked and then added with a bigger smile, "Of course we do. Despite the occasional differences of opinion--" "Occasional?", he laughed. She continued smiling, "You're probably the person I get along with the most. Except for misunderstandings like today." They were now in the town and Kira noticed he didn't continue the conversation now that there were plenty of townspeople around that might overhear. They came to the door of the hostel and as Kira placed her hand on the handle to enter, Sutton said, "If we get along so well with each other, then don't you think we should--" But Kira quickly opened the door, stepped inside, and smiled to him, "Goodnight. I'll see you in the morning." She closed the door and left him standing there all alone. He waited there for a few long moments, then Sutton slowly walked off deep in thought to the direction of his house. * ************************* * It was sometime before dawn the next day when Sutton knocked on the door of the hostel to call for Kira. The old man answered the door and grumbled, "I don't care _who_ you are, this is an uncivilised time to be calling upon guests." He didn't slam the door in Suttons face but he certainly made it clear that he didn't like this disturbance in his established routine. Sutton waited on the doorstep for awhile until the door opened again and Kira stepped out. This time the old man _did_ slam the door. She smiled, "Working your Ambassadorial charm on him I see." "I'm sorry if I woke you but I wanted to get an early start." "I was already awake. Anyway, how far away _is_ this place?" "You'll see.", he smiled. As they walked towards Suttons house he gently touched her head and noted, "Your hair is damp." "I just had a bath." "A bath?" "What's wrong with that? You can say all you like about sonic showers but when I'm down here on Bajor I like to relax in a nice, hot bath. Maybe you should try it sometime." He laughed and she frowned, "What's so funny!?" "That's exactly what _I_ do Nerys." "You're making fun of me." "No I'm not. Maybe you'd like to see the bath in my house before we go?" Kira changed the subject by saying, "I'm not letting you walk there if it's too far you know. You're here for a rest and that's what I.........what's that!?" In front of his house was a cart drawn by a Gremor, the Bajoran equivalent of a horse. See, we won't have to walk.", Sutton smiled. She frowned deeply and so he chided her by saying, "Don't tell me you've got so used to being on DS9 with all that technology that you've forgotten what simple transport is like?" "Simple is right!" "Oh, so I suppose your Resistance cell never made use of Gremors then?" "Gremors and I.......we don't get along." "Don't worry, I'll be driving the cart." "And where did you learn that from?" "My land reclamation days." "Is there _anything_ you didn't learn during those days!?" He sighed, "Are you going to climb up there or are you going to stay here?" Kira walked past him and then agilely climbed up upon the cart. Sutton smiled and took his place beside her. As they moved off she asked, "Where'd you get this thing from anyway?" "Arlim dropped it by this morning." "And where is she now?" He looked at her frowning, "Nerys....." "Okay, okay!" Kira looked in the back of the cart and she saw a long, broad box poking out from under a cover. "Is that the box from Mareks?" "Yes it is. I was getting a bit worried that it wouldn't have arrived but it must have got here just before you rescued me from the Cardassians." "What's in it?" "You'll see." "I wish you'd stop saying that. And just because we're not walking doesn't mean you can spend all day playing archeologist at these ruins of yours." "I promise that there won't be any chipping away at rocks or digging holes.", he smiled. Once they were out of the town, he sped up their travel a little then veered off the main road along some faint tracks. The ride was a fairly uneven one and Sutton smiled to Kira, "Just let me know if it's too rough for you and I'll slow down." Even though she was clinging onto the seat with both hands concerned that at any moment she might be thrown off, she answered, "You don't have to worry about me! - Is this your idea of rest!?" Sutton laughed and they travelled on as sunrise began to replace the bright moonslight. After awhile the way became smoother and Kira relaxed a little but she still help on tight because of the occasional big bump. Sutton pointed and said, "See,....over there amongst those trees? That's where we're heading. It's probably about half an hour away because we have to go around a bit to get there." "Wouldn't it be just simpler if we walked?" "I thought you wanted me to relax?" That hit a large bump and Kira exclaimed, "_This_ is relaxing!?" Finally they arrived at the dense treeline and Kira jumped down as soon as the cart had stopped. She began rubbing her bottom with both hands but when she saw Sutton smiling down from the cart at her, Kira stopped and snapped at him, "I bet you purposely hit every rock and hole with _my_ side of the cart didn't you!?" He smiled wide and got down, then set about unharnessing the Gremor so he could tie it up to feed easily on the high grasses around them. Kira looked around saying, "Where _are_ these ruins anyway!? All I see are trees and more trees." "They're further in. You can't see them from anywhere outside the treeline. In fact I'd say hardly anyone knows there here at all. If they do then they certainly don't care about them." The Gremor was tied up then Sutton went to the cart and hauled the cover off the long box. He pulled the box to the edge and asked, "If you take the other handle then we can get going." He slung a small shoulder bag over himself and waited for Kira. "We're taking that thing with us? How about getting out what you want instead of dragging the whole thing around?" "It's not heavy." Kira took the handle and they swung the box down. He was right, it wasn't heavy at all. It was just too cumbersome for one person too carry. They walked through the trees and she sighed, "For someone who's supposed to be recuperating, you're doing a lot of work. After we haul this thing over there then that's it Paul. No more, I mean it." They finally came upon the ruins set deep in the forest and Kira asked, "I wonder what this place was?" "A temple......an ancient one." "How do you know that? And don't say 'you'll see' to me either or else my end of this damned box might accidently land on your toes." Sutton smiled and said nothing. The trees had grown densely around the ruins so it wasn't surprising that it couldn't be found easily. Sutton lead them around all the fallen walls and columns until they stopped by a pile of rubble beside two enormous stone statues. They set the box down and Sutton went to pull at a large flat slab that lay across a section. But Kira grabbed his arm saying, "I said no exerting yourself Paul!" He stood up and smiled, "Then perhaps you'd like to move it Nerys? Or maybe it's too heavy for you?" She eased him away and took hold of the weather-beaten slab of stone. It swung away easily. So easily in fact that Kira lost her balance and ended up looking silly on the ground before Sutton who was trying very hard not to laugh. Kira wasn't impressed and she stood up saying, "If you _dare_ laugh....." But Sutton contained himself and instead smiled, "I'm sorry Nerys, I should have told you about it. It's my fault entirely." He went to help brush the dirt from her clothes but she said sharply, "It's alright, I can do it myself!" Sutton reached into his bag and took out two torches. He activated them and gave one to Kira saying, "You're going to need this." She frowned at him and he added, "It's okay, there's steps inside. I've been here before." "Yeah, so it seems." "If you grab hold of your end of the box we can go in." "Down there with _this_ thing?" He nodded and Kira replied, "This had better be worth it Paul because you've already talked me into letting you do more than I should have allowed." "It's worth it Nerys." They took hold of the box again and went down inside. The steps lead down to a long, broad passage and then out into several others of smaller sizes. They followed one until they could see that it was going to lead into a large room but Sutton stopped and put down his end of the box before they got there. Kira put her end down and looked about with the light from her torch. The room was so large that the light from her torch couldn't reach the far end and it remained in darkness. She turned back to Sutton and found him holding his light on one of the numerous relief designs set into the walls of the temple. "What is it?", she asked, her voice echoing into the large room. The air was so cold here that their breathing made little clouds of mist in front of them that quickly dissipated before another breath replaced it. Sutton answered, "These carvings are all over the temple walls." "I know, I've been looking at them as we were coming in. You're right, this place is pretty ancient alright. I can't make out what any of this stuff means. There's a few symbols I might have seen before but that's it." He turned to her and asked quietly, "Nerys.....I want to show you something, but before I do I must have your word that you'll keep it a secret." She frowned in puzzlement but answered, "You have my word." "Hold your light here.", he asked. Sutton put one hand onto the carving and spread his fingers out to press on a few particular symbols. Then with his other hand he pressed two other symbols while just maintaining a hold upon his torch. Kira heard a dull 'clunk' and then the wall section began slowly swinging inwards like a door. She stepped back and pointed her light into the open doorway but it only showed a long corridor with more steps that lead even further downwards. "Paul,....what is this?" But he picked up his end of the box and simply replied, "You'll see." Kira was too involved in wondering where they were headed to notice his remark and she picked up her end of the box following Sutton inwards and ever downwards. They walked down the long stretch of steps and Kira heard the stone wall panel close above them with a loud, dull thump. Sutton reassured her, "Don't worry. It opens up from this side too." Finally the steps ended and they walked along a corridor that lead them to a large chamber that appeared to be a natural cave. Sutton said quietly, "Okay, we can put the box down now." Once that was done, he moved off and soon after there was a dull hum followed by the cavern being filled with light from portable lighting units set all around. Kira blinked a few times then turned off her torch as her vision became accustomed to the light. But her dark eyes widened and she gave a little gasp with what she saw. There were several short stone columns in the cavern's centre, and on most of them was an ornately carved box. Inside the semi-circle of columns rested an ornately chiselled stone bench topped with an intricately carved wooden top that served as a seat. Kira said incredulously, "These are.....no, they can't be! Bajoran Orbs...........here!?" She turned to see Sutton activating the seal on the long box they had carried down with them and then she saw him open a separate concealed compartment inside. He gently took out another of the Orb cases and carried it across to the cavern centre where he placed it on a vacant column. Sutton smiled to Kira and softly called, "Come and sit here Nerys." He motioned to the stone seat in the middle and she slowly walked over to it in a daze as he eyes went from the Orb cases and back to Sutton. Once she was seated he smiled, "Now you know what I've been up to and so secretive for all this time." Kira turned her head and mentally counted the Orb cases before saying, "But if you add these to the few Bajor has already recovered then......" "Then the number is complete." She looked at him in amazement and he nodded, "I've had to bribe, cheat, and steal to get them. The Cardassians had most of them. Somehow they found out I'd arranged to swap the real Orbs that they had with fake ones and they weren't too happy about that. But by then it was too late. I'd taken all that they had." "_That's_ why they kidnapped you, wasn't it!" He nodded, "But as you can see, I got them back for Bajor." "But how--" "There's something else I have to show you Nerys....." Sutton walked to all the boxes and swung open the doors. Inside each was a brightly glowing Orb spinning on an invisible axis. There were orbs of different hues and by the time he'd opened them all, the cavern was filled with swirling glows of colour with most of it concentrated in the area where the seat was located. Sutton sat down beside Kira and took her hand saying quietly, "Don't be afraid........" There was a bright flash of light and Kira was blinded by it. She held a hand in front of her eyes but after a few seconds she slowly pulled it down to find herself standing outside in the forest. She felt confused for a moment but then found Sutton beside her still holding her hand firmly, and that gave her some reassurance. "Where.....where are we?", she asked. He just smiled and lead her gently by the hand into the forest. The forest seemed different, less dense, and then she could hear voices,.....many, many low voices. They came out of the trees and looked out upon the large clearing to see the temple. But this time it was much different than when they had entered it. The temple was there fully intact in all it's glory with tall walls covered in colourful designs and large columns that supported a roof high above. But what Kira found more astounding was far from them at the other end of the temple stood thousands of people in a long broad line leading up to the temples' proper entrance. Listening harder she could make out the sound of a lone baby crying but at this distance she couldn't determine whether it was coming from the temple forecourt or the crowd. Kira went to take a step closer but then a man seemed to appear next to her and he stepped in front of Kira to block her way. Even though he was dressed in Vedeks robes, Kira sensed that he was much more than an ordinary Vedek. The man smiled, "There is no need to go closer Kira Nerys." "You...know my name?" He nodded and she asked eagerly, "Where are we? What is this place?" "Always you have questions." The man looked at Sutton and said, "He does not ask questions here anymore. Paul Sutton has learnt that explanations are not as easy to accept as one would like." Kira turned to Sutton and then back to the man who told her, "You have had many tragedies in your past. You must learn to be at peace with yourself Kira Nerys and then the journey that you share with others will be fulfilled. The freedom you seek for others......is also the freedom you seek for yourself." The Vedek bowed a little to them, and then there was a blinding flash of light. As Kiras eyes returned to normal, she saw Sutton closing the Orb cases until once again the only light in the cavern came from the lighting units. It now seemed pale and insignificant when compared to the brilliance of the Orb's light. Sutton sat down with her and gently took her hand once more as she deeply frowned trying to figure out what she'd just experienced. "Paul,......what happened?" "It's okay Nerys. It can be a bit disorientating at first." "At first? You've done this before?" He nodded, "Three times." "That man....the Vedek....he said you'd been there before asking questions. Who was he?" "Nerys,....I'm not sure. There are lots of things I'm not sure of. One thing that I know is that we were there together.....but we won't ever be able to go back there again like that." "How do you know?" "I was told that the last time it happened to me. It was something special that we were allowed to see together......just you and I." He saw that she wanted more answers and he squeezed Kira's hand and smiled, "He always blocked me from going any further too. Sutton sighed and added, "Nerys......I don't think we should mention this experience to anyone. I don't know why,...but it's just a feeling I have." She nodded and he put his arm around her shoulders and smiled, "C'mon, I'll take you back to town." * *** * They travelled along in the cart for awhile in silence. Sutton made sure he took the smoothest route back rather than have his bumpy fun with Kira as he had done so on the outward journey. But finally Kira began coming out of her reverie and she asked, "Tell me what's been going on Paul." He nodded, "I returned to this area to find a house and settle down after all the land reclamation and agricultural work had mostly been done. I was friendly with the Tealan family of course but I wanted a home of my own. I was graciously given one by the town, and not long after I was visited by an old monk. He had many talks with me until one day he must have trusted me enough to take me out to the ruins and show me the secret chamber. There were a few Orbs there already and he told me that the place in ancient times was once the true resting place of them all. But over time the Orbs had become scattered over Bajor. The temple became less used as the people followed the different Orbs to their new resting places around Bajor. But that was a long, long time ago." Sutton took a deep breath and continued, "Then the Cardassians came. The Orbs became more scattered as they were attempted to be hidden but the Cardassians were savage in their attempts to find them all. The monk told me that many lives were lost in protecting the Orbs and their hiding places but in the end, the Cardassians got what they killed for." "I never really knew much of what you're telling me Paul. All this stuff about the old monk and--" "There's more. - The monk said that they'd managed to save a few of the Orbs and had hidden them in the chamber. Those that had helped him hide the Orbs never made it through the early years of the Occupation. He became the only one who knew where they were down there. Everyone else thought that the Cardassians had taken them all." "But why didn't he bring them out after the Occupation ended?" "I don't know. When I asked him, all he said was that the Prophets would be my guide." Kira shook her head wondering what it was all about and Sutton said, "The monk made me promise to try everything in my power to get all the Orbs back......and so that's what I've been doing." "Where is this monk now?" "He died. I'm.....I'm ashamed to say that it happened after that time I ran away from my obligations to Bajor......and to you." "Paul,.....nobody's blaming you for the time you left.....and you _did_ come back." "All the same, I feel somehow responsible. He never told anyone else about the Orbs and he had faith in me to bring the others back to Bajor." They fell silent for a long time and then Sutton said, "The chamber is somehow shielded from being scanned from outside. I know because I've tried it. Maybe that was one of the reasons why the Cardassians never found the location." Kira sighed, "Well now the rest of the Orbs are returned you can finally give them to Bajor." "No Nerys,.....I can't." Her eyes widened in surprise but she didn't say anything because by now they had arrived at the Tealans farm. Elorn and Zeline met them as they came to the side of the house. Zeline laughed, "I hope he wasn't too much trouble for you!" Kira wondered for a moment what she was talking about and then she presumed Zeline was referring to the Gremor. They got off the cart and Sutton smiled, "He was very cooperative. Give your father my thanks for the use of the cart will you?" "You're leaving? You're not staying for something to eat?" "Maybe another time." Elorn nodded and she asked Kira, "Has it been a pleasant outing?" "Yes, it was.....quite pleasant." Zeline frowned, "How come he never takes anyone else there!?" Elorn hushed her and smiled, "All of a sudden she wants to rush off and see ruins now." "But only if Paul takes me.", Zeline smiled. Sutton went over to Zeline who was unharnessing the Gremor and he smiled, "There'll be plenty of things to look at once you start exploring the Gamma Quadrant." He laid a hand upon her shoulder and added, "Who knows, maybe one day you'll take me out there and show me something you've discovered in the Quadrant." Zeline smiled wide and led the Gremor away. * *** * Once Kira and Sutton were walking along the road alone together, she asked forcefully, "Now what did you mean when you said you can't give the Orbs back!?" Sutton sighed, "The Orbs will be returned but it won't be by me." "What are you talking about?" "You probably don't realise it Nerys but I have a hard time living with my 'Healer of Bajor' title. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't appreciate the peoples gratitude, it's just that it's such a hard thing to live up to all the time. I can understand now how Sisko feels about being the Emissary." "What the hell is wrong with you Paul!?" "I want to live a quiet life Nerys. I don't want to be noticed all the time." Kira shook her head and frowned, "So what's going to happen to the Orbs then?" "I don't know yet. I honestly didn't believe I would get them all back so I haven't given it much thought. But I don't want to be known as the man who gave them back to Bajor." Kira went seriously quiet and it was loud enough for Sutton to realise that it was best to be silent too. * **** * They arrived at Suttons house and went inside. Sutton smiled, "Would you like something to eat? I suppose I still have to impress you with my Korab soup." But Kira took a seat at the table and replied, "Sit down Paul, we have to talk." After Sutton was seated across from her she sighed, "I have to say that it's been quite an eventful couple of days. And to think that we only came here so you could rest." Then Kira looked at him a little warily and she added, "Maybe you weren't as ill as you made out you were." Sutton pulled the hyopogun from his pocket and put it onto the table saying, "Doctor Bashir gave this to me in case I needed it. There were a couple of times when I should have but--" "You're telling me that you refused to use this!?" Sutton grabbed the hypo and quickly pressed it to his arm. It gave a sharp hiss and then he put it aside saying, "There, if it'll make you happy!" Kira sighed and shook her head, "You say you don't want to be responsible for giving the Orbs back. I think there's more to it than that." "Nerys......you wouldn't understand." "I think I might." Sutton stood up and walked over to the pile of old books on a table then he put his hand on them saying, "There's a part of a Prophecy that says , 'for the person who returns the hopes of the people back to them, he himself will only live a short life.'" "That's it!? You're worried about an old Prophecy?" But Sutton remained firm. Kira went over to Sutton to tell him in a more friendly voice, "Paul, people interpret Prophecies and Teachings in a hundred different ways." "You don't believe in Prophecies?" "I didn't say that. What I _am_ saying is that it's wrong to make a decision based on a wrong interpretation." "I've studied the texts and I know that--" "Paul,....there are people that spend their entire _lives_ studying those texts and they _still_ can't all agree what's right or wrong." "I know what I've learned." "Alright then, who do you want to give the task to of revealing the Orbs? Because going by your interpretation it's a death sentence for whoever does it." Suttons head sagged and Kira gently took his hand in hers. He looked at her and she said, "I think you're wrong. The reward for returning the Orbs wouldn't be death." "But.....that's what it looked like to me." Kira squeezed his hand and smiled, "Trust me Paul,....I'm a Bajoran. I know these things." He slowly smiled with her and sighed, "Maybe I _am_ wrong.....I thought it sounded crazy from the start." Sutton looked down at their hands together, and then so did Kira. He straightened up and smiled wider, "C'mon let's get out of here." Kira grinned, "Don't I get to taste this great Korab soup of yours then?" "Okay later, but for now lets get out of here and I can show you more of the town." * ************************* * It was getting late in the day as they made their way out from the town. They found themselves down by a small river, and so they set down to lay upon their backs and relax in the warm afternoon sun. Sutton said quietly as he looked up into the sky, "Nerys......you may have heard that I'd become a wealthy man, taking commissions and receiving gifts. But the truth of the matter is that I've used everything that I had to obtain all the Orbs. I had to pay and bribe a lot of people for what I did." Kira smiled, "So all that stuff you do on the station is just an act?" "I suppose so." "I never really considered you rich anyway. What's that Ferengi saying....'You can be honest or wealthy, not honest _and_ wealthy'." They both laughed and Kira sat up next to him. She snapped off a long stalk of grass and playfully stared poking him in the chest with it as she smiled, "What have you got planned for us tomorrow?" "I'm not sure. There's nothing planned." Kira hesitated then said, "Paul,.....how would you feel about taking a strong position in the Government?" He looked up at her and frowned, "Are we going to have this same old argument again? The answer's still no Nerys." "I'm serious." "So am I." "You could do so much more than these politicians do Paul. I know your views. You _can_ lead Bajor in a better way." Sutton remained silent and Kira said more as a statement than a question, "You're going to return the Orbs yourself aren't you Paul?" He sighed, "You want me to, don't you?" "It's the right thing to do." "But what's it going to do to my life Nerys?" She smiled, "You'll get the recognition you deserve." "I can live without another celebration." "You respect the people Paul,....and they respect you. Don't blame them for that." He smiled a little and she added, "And it would help you get elected to a strong position in Government." Sutton smiled wider, "And I'm quite sure I'd be hearing a lot of suggestions from you after I was." "Of course.", she smiled. He sat up and said quietly, "Nerys......the Orbs have waited this long, why don't we let them wait just one more week." "Why?" "Because it'll give us some time together,......just you and I." * ************************* * O'Brien pointed at the schematic on the screen before them and said, "The way I see it, if we re-route here and here, then that'll give us enough energy to supply the new sensor arrays." Sisko frowned as he pointed, "What about this section?" "If you want to put an array there then it's going to take us at least two weeks to work our way around." Sisko's commbadge chirped and Odo's voice said, "-Commander, I think you'd better come down here to the Promenade.-" "What's up Constable?" "-It would be much simpler if you saw for yourself.-" "Alright, I'm on my way." Sisko turned to O'Brien and nodded, "Lets leave that section out for now and concentrate on the others." "Yes sir. If this station was Federation built then there'd be no problem." "I know how it is Chief. You'd think that after all this time here we'd have gotten all the bugs out of everything." "Sometimes I think this station is alive because it certainly feels like I'm always fighting it." Sisko smiled and left O'Brien to it. * *** * When the turbolift doors opened, Sisko was startled by a large crowd of people all trying to get closer to the stations Bajoran temple. The Promenade was choked with them and Sisko saw that most of them were Bajorans. He pushed his way through and found Odo in front of QUARKS surveying the scene. "What's going on!?" Odo replied, "The Bajoran Government has just released the news that the remaining Orbs have been returned......_all_ of them." "_All_ of them!?" Dax emerged from one side of the crowd and as she joined Sisko and Odo, she smiled wide, "Have you heard?" Odo sighed, "There's more Commander,.....you'll be no doubt pleased to know that it was Ambassador Suttons work." Dax pointed her finger at Odo and said, "_That_ was why he must've been erasing his logs and being so secretive." Odo crossed his arms, "The Prylar here is going to make an announcement shortly." Dax stood next to Sisko and she asked him with a big smile on her face, "So Benjamin,.......what do you think of Sutton now?" But at that moment the Prylar appeared from inside the Temple entrance and the crowd fell silent. The Prylar said solemnly, "I have been informed that it is true. The missing 'Tears of the Prophets' have all been returned." The crowd became elated and the Prylar held out his hands for some quiet. Once the gathering was silent again, the Prylar continued, "We must all give our thanks that the Prophets have guided Ambassador Paul Sutton in this sacred task. It is indeed a memorable day for Bajor and one which we will all remember. Go now, be at peace,.....for the Prophets are always with us." As the throng began to slowly dispersed, Quark pushed his way out from behind Dax and Sisko to say loudly, "Finally! Now my customers can get through again!", then he turned to the crowd and shouted out, "Celebrate the Orbs return with a drink at QUARKS!" * ************************* * Sutton and Kira entered his house and he slumped down into a comfortable chair saying, "See? I told you it would be like this." Kira shut the door and smiled, "I thought you handled those crowds rather well." He sighed, "And it's not over yet." She came up behind the chair and affectionately put her arms around him. Kira bent her head close to his and smiled, "I'm very proud of you, but you can't hide in here forever you know." Sutton smiled, "Maybe if we're _real_ quiet they'll forget we're here?" He put his hands upon hers but then a commlink signal sounded behind them and Sutton frowned, "Let the computer take care of it." But Kira stood up and went over to the commspanel. It was artistically integrated into the wall because Sutton had a part in it's design so it didn't look out of place amongst the rest of the Bajoran decor. Every time Kira saw it she was impressed. She accessed the panel and said, "There's a lot of comm requests here Paul." Sutton put a hand over his eyes and sighed, "It's supposed to be a secure commlink.", then he he pulled his hand away and added, "Alright,...who's on the list?" "There's one here from Dax...." Sutton got up and joined Kira by the console screen. She smiled, "And here's an invitation to an official government engagement.....they want you to attend as a guest of honour." "I hate those government functions. I'll try to get out of it." "It's signed by Minister Annora." Sutton looked closer, "Well in that case,.....maybe I'll go after all." He turned to Kira and smiled, "_If_ you come with me that is." She put her arms around his waist and smiled, "C'mon, you know I hate official parties just as much as you. Anyway,....why did you change your mind so quick?" The held each other and Sutton replied, "Remember how I once mentioned I had contacts in the Government? Annora is one of them. She and I get along really well." "As well as us?", Kira said as she squeezed Sutton a little. "Not _quite_.", he smiled, "Anyway, since she'll be there the evening won't be a total loss." "And what about me?" "I thought you didn't want to go?" "I've changed my mind too." "Alright, I can introduce you to Annora. You'll like her." "What about these other 'contacts' you have?" "Well,.....I exaggerated my supposed influence in the Government. There's only Annora and Rennic." "If you stopped antagonising them then maybe you'd get more people on your side." He held her a little tighter and smiled, "I'm not even in Government yet and already you're giving me advice." Kira smiled with him as she softly replied, "That's because I know how to make you listen." * ************************* * An aide next to First Minister Karlin leaned over and whispered to him, "Well,...look what the horracat just dragged in...." He looked over to see Sutton and Kira enter the large function room. Sutton wore his usual ambassadorial garments, and Kira was looking very presentable in her blue dress uniform. They made quite a striking couple. Immediately they were surrounded by government officials of various standings all eager to congratulate Sutton, or at least be see to be doing so. Karlin turned to his aide saying quietly, "We should have posted her to one of the moons instead of that damned station. Alright,....go over and give him my regards,...the usual thing. Then see if you can split them up. I want a chance to talk to her without Sutton being around." Despite the press of people around him, Sutton managed to see Annora waiting by herself by one of the many large bay windows. She saw him and smiled but he still had to deal with the immediate protocol of meeting those in attendance. Kira looked a little bewildered at all the fuss and she moved a little closer to Sutton to avoid losing him altogether. Karlins aide pushed his way through and said loudly, "Ambassador, The First Minister wishes to congratulate you on your services to Bajor." Sutton looked across and saw Karlin nod respectfully. "And he hopes that you will enjoy tonights celebration in your honour. There will be a formal presentation in a short while." Sutton nodded and then the others moved in again all trying to engage him in conversation. The aide moved closer and whispered into Kira's ear, "First Minister Karlin would like to speak to you Major." "Me?" She followed him off and was lead to Karlin who smiled and greeted her enthusiastically, "Major Kira,......it is indeed a pleasure to meet you." She seemed puzzled and merely nodded, "First Minister." He turned to his aide, "Get the Major and myself a glass of Evasanna." Karlin took Kira's arm and lead her away until they were alone at one side of the room looking at the large gathering of people. "I have heard good things about you Major." Kira looked uncomfortable and she replied, "That's...uhhhh, good sir." "Don't think that we here in Government don't appreciate what you do up on that station. On the contrary, we're glad to have someone with your..........'abilities' to get the job done." "Thank you sir." "Call me Karlin, Major." The aide arrived and gave them their drinks, then Karlin waved him away. Sutton smiled and nodded, but eventually said to those around him, "Thank you for your words and I'll try to talk with each of you later but for now I have to see someone. Please excuse me." As he walked off towards Annora, one of the guests whispered to another, "It's Annora,........I _told_ you we should have gotten to know Sutton before this!" Annora was a typically beautiful Bajoran woman of perhaps thirty five with dark eyes and hair to match. As he came to her, she reached down to the small table beside her and gave Sutton a glass. "Dal'th wine.", she smiled. He took a drink and sighed, "I _really_ hate these functions Annora." She smiled a little wider, "They know you do. That's why I made sure that you got my personal invitation." Sutton took a sip then smiled, "And that's the only reason I came." They looked into each others eyes for awhile until she asked quietly, "How have you been? I mean with all this Cardassian business and everything?" "I'm okay." "Just......okay?" The both smiled wider and turned to look out across the room together. "Karlin has snared Kira over there.", she noted. "I wonder what they're talking about?" "You can ask her later. In the meantime look who's just arrived...." Sutton saw Sisko enter wearing his Starfleet dress uniform. Annora explained, "As Emissary, he is of course also invited." Sutton turned to her and frowned, "What's going on Annora? This isn't just a presentation function is it?" She shook her head, "The Kai is coming tonight. I think there will be an official announcement on the Orbs." "Then why didn't you tell me that before I came!? What if I'd decided not to come!?" She quietly replied, "I'm not supposed to know of her visit, _that's_ why." Sutton looked at her and sighed, "I'm sorry. You did the right thing in making me come Annora." "It may not look like it but there's a lot of important people here tonight Sutton........and _very_ powerful people." He grinned as Sisko became the focus of attention, "At least I'm not here suffering by myself. Sisko looks like he'd rather be back at the station." Sutton felt someone come to stand beside him and he turned to see Kira there looking a bit lost. He smiled and said, "Kira Nerys, this is Minister for Arts, Annora Jevar." Annora smiled, "I see you've been having quite a conversation with the First Minister." Kira looked at Sutton and he reassured her, "It's okay, Annora's a trusted friend." Kira frowned, "Karlin said that the Government is considering putting a large military base on New Bajor. He said a position is there for me together with a promotion if I decide to go." Annora sighed, "You won't be accepting it will you?" "I...." "Don't. - Karlin just wants you into the Gamma Quadrant because he knows that Sutton will follow you." Kira looked at Sutton again and he nodded, "It sounds like he wants you out of the way alright, Nerys." Annora shook her head, "Not just Kira, it's you too Sutton. I think he's worried that you're becoming too popular." Kira scowled, "I thought it sounded too good to be true." Annora pointed to the balcony and the three of them moved outside. They looked out upon the city night lights for a short while and then Annora said, "Something's going to happen here tonight.....I don't know what it is but.....I feel it." Sutton informed Kira, "Sisko's here." "Yes I saw.", Kira replied. Annora smiled, "It reminds me of the old days, Sutton." He rolled his eyes and smiled, "I'll just get us all some fresh drinks. I'll be right back." As he walked off, Annora turned to Kira saying, "You should have seen him in the old days dealing with officials. He had fire in his eyes and _nobody_ dared to get in his way. Those that did found out that you couldn't make him back down if he had his mind set." Kira smiled with her, "Have you known Paul long?" "I met him by accident, although I think it was the Will of the Prophets that made our paths cross. He was in the city trying to do some research." "On old Bajoran religious texts?" "Yes, how did you know?" "Just a guess." "He was stumbling around going from place to place, going anywhere but to the right location until he accidently came into the Arts Ministry building." "By accident?" Annora smiled, "He doesn't like to admit it but his grasp of the written Bajoran word isn't as good as he makes out." Kira smiled wide, "Please,.....go on." "He thought the Arts exhibition hall was a museum." Kira laughed and Annora continued, "That's where I found him and of course I recognised him right away. A human wearing a Bajoran earring? It couldn't have been anybody else but him." Kira nodded. "So we got to talking and I told him that he should seek Vedek Meeras at the Ministry Archives." "So _that's_ how he meet Meeras." Annora nodded, "After that the two of them were meeting quite often exchanging views, ideas, and information. I think Meeras took a liking to him because of his genuine enthusiasm." Kira said quietly, "Annora,......Paul told me that he believed the Prophecies indicated that whoever returned the Orbs would die early in life." "This is from his studies I presume?" "Yes. I told him that he must've been mistaken but........" "But you're not absolutely sure yourself, are you?" Kira shook her head and Annora smiled, "I'll have a talk with Meeras and see if I can place your mind at ease." "I told him that the Prophets would be more likely to reward someone for it rather than punishing them." "All the same, I'll have Meeras look into it. I'll ask her to do it quietly." Sutton returned with a tray of drinks and gave one each to Kira and Annora saying, "I got you both Evasanna. It seems that's all they've got here besides a few bottles of Dal'th." Annora smiled, "The Dal'th was my idea. I know how you like it." "I like it because it leaves my head clear." Kira smiled, "Annora just told me of the story of how you two met." Sutton looked at Annora suspiciously and Kira laughed, "If you like I'll teach you how to read." Sutton sighed, "Annora,....you said you wouldn't tell anyone!" Annora replied with a knowing smile, "But Kira isn't just...'anyone', is she?" Sutton shook his head and smiled, "Okay, I guess not. Just don't go spreading it around." Kira asked her, "How did you come to know Vedek Meeras?" "We studied as acolytes together." Sutton asked in surprise, "_You_ studied to be in a religious order?" It was at that point that Sutton realised the certain 'quality' that Annora possessed may have been due to her religious training. She had an air of dignity and refinement about her that he not only found appealing, but it made her stand out from other people that he knew. "It was a long time ago....during the Occupation. But you know how things were back then. In any case I found out that it wasn't my vocation and so I left." Kira asked, "So what did you do?" "I took up writing instead." "What do you write?" "Have you heard of, 'Beyond The Dream The Brave Shall Fall' ?" "You wrote _that_!?" "Have you read it?" "I _loved_ that story. You must be 'Flarys'." Annora smiled, "It's just a name I write under. It wouldn't do for a Minister to be seen to have so much spare time that she can waste it writing stories." Kira turned to Sutton and asked, "Have you read any of her stories?" He smiled, "I've read them all." A dull bell sounded and Annora said, "The Kai must be here." They filed out and joined the rest of the waiting guests in the main room. The Kai had entered and was being trailed by several Vedeks and Prylars who each kept a respectful distance behind. As the Kai mounted a small raised area inside the room, Karlin also made his way there. A Vedek came beside Sutton and indicated that he was to come with him, so Sutton handed his glass to Annora and followed. Sutton saw that Sisko was also being guided into position until they stood beside each other looking up to the Kai and the First Minister. The room was silent and Karlin smiled, "We all know we are here to celebrate a great day. A day that many of us thought that we might never see,.....but it has arrived, and we must give thanks that our prayers have been answered." He stepped aside so that all attention was on the Kai. Kira noticed that in Karlins short speech he never once mentioned Sutton. The Kai bowed to Sisko and Sutton, "Emissary, and The Healer of Bajor. Each of you has been chosen by the Prophets to fulfill tasks for the Bajoran people, and you have both willingly done so. For this, we all give you our gratitude." The Kai bowed again but then stood up straight and addressed the rest of those in the room directly. "The Tears of the Prophets have been returned. Words are impossible to describe how I feel but I would say to all those who's faith has wavered that our prayers were answered by the Prophets. Do not ever again doubt your faith. Believe in the Prophets and follow their Teachings for it is in this way that we all fulfill our role as the Children of the Prophets." The Kai gave a curt nod and then a Vedek moved discretely up and passed across a long scroll. The Kai unrolled it and began reading, "The Tears of the Prophets will be returned to whence they fell so long ago. These are the places where they shall each be placed back,......Erana, Oras, Beleen, Anta--" "Wait!", exclaimed Sutton. All heads turned to him in astonishment. To interrupt the Kai in such an important event was unheard of! "Are you saying you're going to separate the Orbs!?" The Kai smiled, "They are to be returned from whence they were taken." "No!" This time those around Sutton moved away and watched with wide eyes as he dared to question the Kai. "I don't care _what_ plans you thought you had, the Orbs stay together!" Kira closed her eyes and whispered to herself, "Oh no Paul! What are you doing!?" The Kai rolled the scroll back up a little and smiled, "It is not your place to question such matters Paul Sutton." "When I contacted the Government about the Orbs, I made it clear that they remain _together_! - The ancient texts say--" "The ancient texts are open to _many_ interpretations my friend, and those far wiser than yourself are the ones best left to--" "The Orbs stay _together_.", he repeated firmly. The Kai looked at Karlin for a few moments and then back to Sutton before replying, "You have been under a lot of stress Paul Sutton. It is no secret that you are on Bajor to rest and recuperate. I think you should--" "I _know_ what the texts say and I know why the Orbs must stay together. Together they are a symbol of unity and peace for _all_ the Bajoran peoples. The Prophecies say that when the Tears of the Prophets are as one, only then will the peoples also be as one." One of the Kais Vedeks stepped forward and angrily replied, "_You_ dare to lecture the Kai on Prophecies and the Teachings of the Prophets!?" Sutton remained firm and said to the Kai, "The Orbs stay together and they must stay in the cavern. It's their ancient resting place." Karlin stood beside the Kai and exclaimed, "You want the great Orbs to stay at Neeshar!? It's just farms and forests!" "The temple was built just to house the Orbs. It's a place of ancient worship." "It's a pile of ruins!" The Kai frowned and noticed that the large assembly of people were becoming increasingly uneasy. Karlin said, "Sutton, I'm not denying you've done some good things for Bajor but you're going too far with this insane bid to--" "To what!? To regain for Bajor what selfish minded leaders have strived to keep apart for so long!? The Orbs were meant to stay together and I'll do everything in my power to make sure they do so!" The guests were talking noisily amongst themselves until the Kai spoke aloud, "I would like to hear what the Emissary has to say on this." Suddenly everything went silent, and when Sutton turned to Sisko beside him, Sisko felt everyones eyes upon him. "Your Eminence,......I can't say that the Ambassador is right or wrong, but what he does say has some value. I would like to suggest that perhaps further study be done on the relevant texts so then a decision can be made." "Tell me Emissary, and tell me true.......do _you_ think that the Tears should stay together?" Sisko looked at Sutton for a few moments and then replied, "I can only speak for myself in saying that they should. - For all the reasons that the Ambassador has already given." Everyone looked at the Kai who was standing there deep in thought. Then the Kai passed the scroll back to the Vedek and said, "We will consider this further. - May the Prophets be with you all." In complete silence, the Kai walked out followed by the entourage of Vedeks and Prylars, many of which looked back at Sutton with concern on their faces. As the guests began loudly talking with each other again, they moved further away from Sutton giving him stares and glances. On his way out of the room, Karlin angrily whispered to one of his advisors, "You assured me this would all go smoothly!" "I didn't know that--" "Do you know what the Province leaders are going to say to me when I have to tell them that their precious Orbs aren't going to be returned!? Are you going to speak to the others who's Orbs are going to be moved to Neeshar!?" The advisor was silent and Karlin seethed, "And it's _all_ Suttons fault!" Annora and Kira joined Sisko and Sutton as the other guests started leaving in a progressive stream. Annora smiled, "_Just_ like the old days." Sutton frowned, "You'd better go. Things might get difficult for you if they think you're supporting me." She laughed, "They don't bother me. I think you were right and I know that many others here tonight believe so too." Sutton looked at Sisko, "Thanks for supporting me." "I wasn't. I just said what I thought was right." Kira frowned, "I think it's time we got out of here." They left the room and made their way out into the gardens which lead off into the rest of the city. Annora smiled, "Don't be so worried Sutton. The Kai is reconsidering and that means you're not being dismissed entirely." Kira sighed, "I think Paul's right too but none of this matters if the religious Council and the Kai decide that the Orbs will be separated." Sutton replied, "Then I'll make it my business to fight them." Sisko said in surprise, "Fight the religious hierarchy!?" "I don't care. If that's what it takes then I'll--" "Alright Paul, we get the message.", Kira said as she rubbed his shoulder. They stopped by a large pool and Sisko sighed, "I think we'd better call it a night. I have to admit that this wasn't how I thought the function would end." "None of us did.", Annora replied. Kira linked her arm into Suttons and said, "C'mon Paul, let's get going. - Goodnight." As they walked off into the darkness, Sisko quietly asked Annora, "Is it just my imagination or are those two more friendly than usual?" She smiled, "It's not your imagination Commander. Now,...would you like to walk me home? I'd love to hear about some of your adventures." * ************************* * Sutton pushed the book away and sighed, "I can't concentrate Nerys. It's been three days and we haven't heard anything yet." Kira pushed the book back towards him and said firmly, "Keep reading." He frowned but bent down towards the book again, "The father heard that--" "No." Sutton read the text again in front of him and tried once more, "The father feared that his sons would leave the......village and take the money that they had all.........earned?" "That's right, keep going." "That they had all earned from the last crop. So he.....he......" "C'mon Paul, you know this word." "So he.......", Sutton sat up again and complained, "I feel like I'm in school or something." "You are. Kira's School For Ambassadors Who Don't Know How to Read Bajoran." "That's not funny." "You can't keep relying on translator devices _all_ your life Paul." "I wish Annora hadn't told you." "Just be glad that nobody else knows. How would it look for a Bajoran Ambassador who can't even read signs properly?" "I'm a lot better than I was when I first met Annora." He looked at Kira sitting beside him and asked, "Are you hungry? I could just--" Sutton began to stand up but Kira pulled him back down and said, "We'll finish this chapter and _then_ we'll have a break." He frowned and she added, "Just be thankful you're the teachers pet or otherwise I'd have to write a bad report." They both smiled and he turned back to the book. * ************************* * "-So how's my patient doing Major?-", Bashir asked. Kira replied to the viewscreen, "He seems to be okay. He took that hypo you gave him about a week ago." "-Has he had any more dizzy spells, headaches, or disorientation?-" "None at all." "-Make sure that he sees me when he returns to the station. By the sounds of things I'd say that he's ready for work but I'd like to do one final examination to give him a clean bill of health.-" Kira nodded. "-Have you heard anything yet Major? I mean about the Orbs.-" She frowned for a moment and he added, "-Commander Sisko told us.-" "No word yet." "-Never mind, I'm sure it'll turn out for the best.-" "Okay doctor. We'll be back in about a week. Kira out." She closed the commlink just before the door opened and Sutton walked into the house. "You talking to someone Nerys?" "Just Doctor Bashir. He said you're probably fit for work again." "I wonder how Diora's doing. The last report I read didn't say much." They sat down at the table in silence for awhile until Sutton said in annoyance, "This waiting is driving me crazy. I could do better things with my time." Kira smiled, "You mean you haven't been enjoying my company?" He reached across the table and held her hand saying, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean--" "It's okay, I know." Sutton looked to be deep in thought and then with a sigh he said, "Nerys......there's a couple of other things that I've been meaning to talk to you about." "Like what?" "You'll probably say that I _am_ crazy,....but I believe that there's another Orb out there somewhere,.....in the Gamma Quadrant." "What are you talking about?" "The ancient texts indicate that--" "Paul,....you have trouble reading Bajoran childrens books. Don't you think you're liable to make mistakes with _ancient_ Bajoran texts?" Sutton took his hand from hers and replied defensively, "I think my translator devices are pretty accurate." "Paul, they're machines. What is written down and how it's meant to be read can be two different things. A machine can't always reveal what the writer is trying to convey." Sutton looked away but Kira reached over and squeezed his hand smiling, "What else were you going to tell me?" He looked back into her eyes and said quietly, "You'll probably say I've misinterpreted things again." She squeezed his hand tighter and smiled, "C'mon.....what is it?" He took a deep breath and quietly asked, "Nerys,......would you marry me?" Kira just froze. Sutton kept waiting but she remained silent. He pulled his hand away and stood up, then Sutton walked over to a window and gazed through it outside into the darkness. He sighed, "It's okay Nerys.....I don't blame you. It's my fault. I always expect too much." There was a loud knock on the door that startled them both and Kira quickly stood up. When Sutton answered the door he found a Vedek standing there with a large sealed document in his hand. Before Sutton could say anything, the Vedek said with a touch of menace in his voice, "It is not wise to criticise the Kai so openly." He thrust the document into Suttons hands and then turned around to walk off into the night. Sutton shut the door and looked at the document in his hands. It was closed with two official seals. One was from the First Ministers office, and the other held the official mark of the Kai. Kira came up to him but when Sutton saw her he found that Kira was looking at him instead of the document. "This looks like it Nerys." Sutton gave her the document and said, "You read it. You know I'm hopeless." She took it but kept looking at him. "Paul......whatever this says,.....you still know how I feel about you." "I know.", he answered quietly. And then Kira broke the seals...... * ************************* * Rennic looked to be asleep in the bed when Sutton walked in but he opened his eyes and smiled, "Ahhh, you came!" "I had to kind of sneak off from Kira. I hope she understands." He beckoned Sutton to sit in a chair beside him. Once Sutton was seated Rennic smiled, "Congratulations my boy on changing the Kais' mind. That's no small feat." Sutton nodded, "I was prepared to fight." "Oh, I'm sure you were." "And they say that they'll be rebuilding the temple." "Well they'll have to!", Rennic laughed. "So,....how are you?" "Ahhhhh well, they see to it here that I'm comfortable. I've even had some of those Federation doctors visit me while I've been here." Sutton looked concerned and so Rennic smiled, "Don't worry, I'm not dying if that's what you're thinking. But all this has given me a good opportunity to consider a lot of matters......and one of them is you." "Me?" "I've decided to relinquish my Ministers position. The election for it will be held in a months time." "You can't leave! Who's going to take your place,......Diora!?" Rennic smiled, "They'll have a choice of _two_ candidates." "Oh,.....no, you don't mean _me_!?" "Yes, you Sutton." He worriedly said, "I can't accept Rennic." "You can and you will. I have a few reservations about Diora but I'm going to let others decide who will take my place. You understand that standing for an election is not compulsory. You can pull out if you wish." Sutton frowned and then replied with a deep sigh, "I can't pull out." Rennic smiled, "There'll be two choices, yourself and Diora. I can easily see one or the other taking my position." "But I don't know how to be a Minister." "And you didn't know how to be an Ambassador either but that never stopped you." Sutton slowly shook his head, "I wasn't expecting this when you asked for me to see you here." "I'm sure you didn't.", Rennic smiled, "Now,...tell me about everything that's been going on......" * ************************* * Kira walked over to the comms panel in Suttons house to answer the call chime. When she did, it was Rennic onscreen. "-Ahh Major, I've found you at last. I just wanted to tell you the good news.-" "What news?" "-Sutton has accepted my nomination to stand as a candidate for the position of Trades Minister. He and Diora are the only two candidates.-" "That's.....good news....._great_ news but,...what about yourself?" "-Oh don't worry about me Major, I've decided my time in government is over. The election isn't until next month but already I feel far better than I have in years. I hope you don't mind me contacting you but as you're a close friend of Suttons I thought you'd like to know.-" "No, that's okay. So,.....Paul saw you today did he?" "-Yes, he was in here earlier.-" "He didn't happen to say when he's returning home did he?" "-No.....is that a problem?-" "It's alright. Well Rennic, I hope you enjoy your new life." "-Oh I will Major, I will.-", he smiled. Kira ended the commlink and smiled to herself, "Minister Sutton?" * ************************* * When Sutton opened the large door to the Ministers office, the last thing he expected to see there was Diora. For a moment he saw Diora with her elbows on the table and her face covered with her hands. But Suttons entrance had startled her and she quickly sat back in the thickly upholstered chair composing herself. Sutton debated with himself for a moment whether he should leave but then he decided to enter the room since Diora had now already seen him. Closing the door behind him, Sutton took the long walk to the large table which she sat behind. Now he was closer Sutton could see that she was upset. Her eyes were moist but Diora held up her head and tried to regard Sutton with that piercing gaze of hers once more. "Come to gloat have you!?", she said accusingly. He stood before her and replied quietly, "I didn't know you'd be here Diora. I expected that you'd be at a trade meeting or --" "So you thought you'd take the opportunity to go through my office and see what you could find." He didn't answer her and she said, "You _knew_ I'd have no chance at any of those trade meetings, didn't you!" "That letter of introduction I gave you should have helped. You were there acting in my capacity." "You _knew_ they wouldn't accept me,....._any_ of them!" "That's a lie!" "They didn't want to deal with me at _all_. They kept asking for you and when I said that you weren't coming they simply closed up their books and that was it." "I'm not responsible for how they'd accept you Diora. _You_ were the one who told me they'd trade with anyone if I wasn't there." "But that's just it.......as long as you're around they're always going to want to deal with only you." "Well I'm sorry. What else do you want me to say?" "And now Rennic has put you forward as a candidate for the election." "Don't blame me for that Diora. I didn't ask for the nomination." "No,....but you didn't turn it down _did_ you! What chance have _I_ now got! I'm the only other candidate but I won't win will I?! Oh no, they'll vote for the man who returned the Orbs back to Bajor won't they?!" He sat down and sighed, "I can understand how you feel but --" "No you can't! How _could_ you?! I fought hard to get where I am now and I had to suffer years of people spreading lies and rumours just so they'd get me out of the way." She leaned forward and continued, "But you listen Sutton, and you listen good,....._you're_ not going to succeed in getting rid of me." "That's what's wrong with you Diora. You just want the power and position to get revenge on those who you think have done you wrong. And you want to know something? _That's_ why I accepted Rennics nomination. I honestly thought once that you were someone better,......that's why I originally helped you. But now I can see I was mistaken." "You don't fool me Sutton. All you've wanted from the beginning was to have the power to do what _you_ want and have your pretty little Major by your side." Diora knew she'd hit home with those remarks and she pressed forward by saying, "You came in my office hoping to find that information I have on your past, didn't you?!" He was silent and she smiled, "Well, you're never going to find all the copies I have of it Sutton. Unless you back down from the nomination then I'll make sure _everyone_ knows what I know about you." He answered quietly, "I knew one day you'd find a reason to use it against me." Diora kept smiling and now she seemed more confident with herself. "All you have to do is back down then you can go on with your little Ambassador's life and let the real work be handled by someone who knows what they're doing." "And that's you of course.", he sarcastically answered. "What do you know about running things? If it wasn't for that Alayna woman in the Gamma Quadrant you'd still be a nobody Sutton. Just because you have goodwill it doesn't mean you know how to run a Ministers office,...and don't try to tell me that you do." "I've done more for Bajor than you've ever done!" "And now is the time for you to get out of the way." He stood up, and Diora's eyes narrowed as she said, "What'll you do Sutton,....kill me and try to make it look like an accident too? If anything happens to me then the information gets out, I promise you that. And then it's the end for you Sutton." He just stood there and looked at her coldly. Diora reached into a drawer and pulled out a PADD. She keyed in a secret access code then threw the PADD across the table saying, "Go on, look at it. It's what you came in for, wasn't it?" Sutton picked it up and read the PADD. "This is it!? This is all you have on me!?" "It's enough for people to start asking questions, begin investigations, and put two and two together like I did." "I can't believe that for all this time that this is all you had!" "It can still finish you Sutton,......._and_ you know it." "You don't know _anything_ about me Diora! You've figured out only a tiny piece of it all!" She smiled and asked sarcastically, "I don't suppose you want to tell me the rest?" Sutton smashed the PADD on the corner of the table in frustration then he angrily faced Diora. "You don't scare me Sutton. As long as I have the information then you don't _dare_ act against me." He looked into her eyes for awhile and then finally said in resignation, "I'll tell Rennic that I'm not accepting his nomination." She nodded and accepted his defeat. Sutton turned around to walk away but Diora called out, "And Paul,....." He stopped and looked to see her smiling, "I'll still want regular reports _in person_ of all your trade negotiations." "Go to hell!" Diora smiled as she watched him leave, angrily slamming the large door behind him. * ************************* * Kira read the note left for her on Suttons terminal in his house and she frowned as she said quietly to herself, "Where are you? What are you up to Paul?" There was a knock on the door and so she walked across and answered it to find that it was Vedek Meeras. "Is the Ambassador at home?" "He's....uhhh....out." "Then that will suit our needs because I wish to speak with you in private." Kira opened the door wider and Meeras entered. She looked around for a few moments and noted, "It is as I imagined his house would be." They sat down at the table and Meeras spoke, "Annora has asked me to investigate the Ambassadors interpretation of an old Prophecy. I have given it some priority given the events of these recent days." "What did you find?" "I do not wish to alarm you Major but there _is_ some substance in what he has said." "There can't be!", Kira worriedly replied. "Let me explain. According to ancient Prophecies there was to be someone that was referred to as the "Patrah" who would help bring the peoples of Bajor together and also save them from a great danger." "We're not talking about Paul here are we?" "I am afraid that much of the writings did not escape the destruction by the Cardassians during the Occupation. What little we have only gives us a tiny part of the whole Prophecy." "Then what is he on about then?" "I think that perhaps he may _believe_ that he is the prophecised Patrah." "But Paul's returned the Orbs,.....he brought us the land reclamators, he--" "I have studied the Prophecy and other related material and it is my opinion that he is mistaken in his belief." "If you think it isn't Paul that the Prophecy is about then why does _he_ think that it's him?" Meeras sighed, "There have been many throughout our history Kira who have thought that they have been ordained by the Prophets for a destiny as laid out in the Prophecies. But there have been those who have manipulated peoples beliefs so that they could gain power and advantage. It has happened before and it will happen again." "You're not saying that Paul is using the Prophecies for his own reasons are you?" "I am not suggesting that at all but it is sometimes easy to see in the Prophecies what you _want_ to see, rather than what is truly there." "Are you _sure_ this Patrah isn't anything to do with Paul?" "No-one can say that for certain but it does not appear to be. You should not worry yourself over this." "So,.....do we tell Paul?" "The choice is yours. He will of course believe what he _wants_ to believe. In the time since I have known him he and I have had many discussions and I have come to realise that his is someone who's beliefs are not easily changed. He has taken to our customs quite readily but I think he is still uneasy about our beliefs. It is a subject that he tries to avoid with me." "Then leave it with me. I'll talk to him." "As you wish." Kira sighed, "Thanks for your help. I can't say that it's exactly what I wanted to hear but at least it's given me something to go on." Meeras smiled, "Perhaps you can convince him to visit a temple. I have tried many times and failed. I believe that if it was you who asked him then it is possible that he might listen." Kira smiled, "Maybe,...but I think there's only one way I could get him to do that." "And how would that be?" Kira smiled a little wider, "Never mind." * ************************* * Sutton wasn't surprised to see Kira in his home when he returned that night but he was glad that she was there. When he shut the door, Kira hugged him and said, "Rennic's told me the news." Sutton stopped smiling, "What news?" She squeezed him a little and replied happily, "Minister Sutton...." But Kira saw his reaction and she frowned, "What's wrong?" He eased himself from her and went to stand over by the window. Kira came up to him and as Sutton looked outside he quietly said, "I've contacted Rennic.......I'm not standing for the election." "What!?" "Don't ask me to explain Nerys." She shook her head, "I don't believe you. Rennic told me that--" "And I'm telling _you_.....I won't be in the election. I can't and I _won't_ tell you why." Kira stood there for awhile and she wasn't sure what to say but slowly she came close to Sutton and put her hand on his arm. "Is it this Patrah business Paul?" He looked at her and asked, "How do you know about that?" "It's not important." Sutton shook his head, "No.....it's nothing to do with that." Then she asked very quietly, "Is it......_me_?" He sighed, "It's time I went back to work. Diora hasn't done so well so I'll have a lot of catching up to do. It'll probably take--" "Give me an answer Paul,.....is it because of me?" He took her hand in his and tried to assure her, "No,.....it's not. Please don't think that it is." They looked into each others eyes for a few long moments before Kira sighed, "Believe me, you wouldn't want to marry me Paul. I've got a bad temper...._real_ bad. I like to do things _my_ way and..........why are you smiling?" "I like those things about you Nerys." Slowly they came together and hugged each other. * ************************* * The door to Suttons quarters on DS9 opened but it was Jarvis who quickly stepped in without being observed. He looked around the room at the Bajoran decor from where he stood and Jarvis shook his head before heading straight for Suttons computer terminal. After he brought the screen to life with a few key presses, Jarvis then set about using the system in earnest. "Well Sutton,.......you're a bit more inventive with your security codes but we'll see if the old master can't beat you yet." A short while later Jarvis smiled, "Just as I thought. Right,.....now to do a bit of sightseeing before the real fun stuff begins......." * ************************* * Kira and Sutton sat in the rear section of the Runabout talking quietly with each other until Lieutenant Anderson came in. They looked up at her and she saw that she'd interrupted something private. "I'm sorry to interrupt but I just got word that the Commander wants you back at work as soon as we return to the station Major." "What's up?" "The main computer system went offline for an hour or so and they're still trying to get everything up again." "Okay Lieutenant, tell them I got the message." Anderson stood there for just a few moments too many and Kira frowned, "That will be _all_ Lieutenant." Obviously she wasn't welcome to stay so Anderson quickly went back to the bridge, then Kira and Sutton returned to their quiet conversation. * ************************* * When Kira entered Ops she saw that everyone was quite busy and she noticed some of the displays were still acting up. Dax was frowning at her console and as Kira made her way over to her, O'Brien popped his head up from the pit area and shouted, "Try it now." Dax pressed a few buttons and replied, "Still no good Chief." O'Brien grumbled and bent back down into the pit to work inside the open computer panels. Dax looked up at Kira and sighed, "Am I glad _you're_ back." "What's been happening?" "We don't know why but the main computer system went down. We've got most things running again but we've lost docking logs, security logs,...you name it. Benjamin's calmed down a bit now so I suppose you'd better go in and see him." Kira was about to turn away when Dax added with a smile, "How did things go on Bajor?" Kira smiled deeply, "Ask me later." Dax noticed Kira's happy state and she pressed her, "Hey c'mon, if it's good news then let me hear it. I need something to take my mind off all this mess." There was a loud crackle then a small puff of smoke arose from the pit area as O'Brien shouted, "Bloody hell! That's supposed to be fixed!" Kira kept smiling, "I don't know if it's the right time or not to tell you but......." Dax was more than curious now and she got up from behind her console to stand in front of Kira. Kira whispered, "Paul and I have decided to get married." Dax suddenly hugged her and she emotionally sighed, "I'm so happy for you! For the _both_ of you!" The Ops staff were looking at the two of them and so Kira eased Dax from herself as she added, "Don't go telling anyone yet Dax. I want to tell Sisko before everyone else hears about it." Dax nodded with a smile, "My lips are sealed." They looked at each other for a few moments and then Dax hugged her again even more tightly than before. * ************************* * It was later in the day when Kira and Sutton were walking slowly down the Promenade together talking quietly with each other. "The whole station knows about us Paul.", she smiled. He nodded and smiled with her, "I've even had O'Brien telling me that if I ever need marital help then I can come to him about it." "Everyone sure seems to be making it their business to offer advice." Sutton smiled a little wider, "You should have heard some of the things that Jadzia gave me advice on. But I think I'll have to wait until we're alone to tell you about them." Kira gave him a sideways look and Sutton sighed, "C'mon, you know she is." "Sometimes I think she crosses the line a little too much.", Kira frowned. "Hey, she's a friend to both of us,....a good friend....you _know_ that. She also goes out of her way to help. Her heart is in the right place so can't you forgive her for a few odd mistakes?" Kira sighed deeply, "I guess so." "You've invited everyone we talked about?" "I told them all we don't want a fuss made of it but you know how people are." "I hope they understand that." Kira nodded, "Odo seemed a bit reluctant to come but I finally got him to agree." "What did you do?" "I told him that if he didn't turn up then our wedding's off." Sutton sighed, "The last thing I want is for this to become another state event. I think we deserve our privacy." Quark surprised them by springing out and exclaiming, "Congratulations!" "Yeah,...thanks.", Kira replied with uncertainty. Quark eagerly asked, "Have you decided where the wedding will take place? Might I make a suggestion? I could organise a great venue." "_No_.", Kira firmly stated. "What about--" "Forget it!" Sutton sighed, "The wedding will be on Bajor with a few close guests. It's going to be a _private_ affair Quark." "How about the catering, or the reception, or --" Kira exclaimed, "Listen Quark, if you have _anything_ to do with my wedding then I'll wring your scrawny neck!" Quark smiled, "But I _am_ invited aren't I?" She grabbed him by his jacket lapels and threatened, "You'd be the _last_ person I'd invite! If you show your face there I'll--" "Okay, okay! I get the message!" Kira let go of him and as Quark straightened his jacket he sighed, "Well it's your loss. I've got a second cousin who specialises in weddings but if you want to have it your way then fine." Quark walked off back to his bar as Kira turned to Sutton saying, "And don't you _dare_ make any deals with him about our wedding Paul." Sutton smiled, "I wasn't about to, I promise." They had only gone a few more steps when Suttons smile vanished. Jarvis stood before them and beamed, "May I offer my congratulations to the two of you? You make a very happy couple I can see." Kira politely nodded her thanks but then she noticed how Sutton was looking at him. It was a mixture of shock and hate. "What are _you_ doing here Jarvis!?", Sutton quietly exclaimed. "Hey, is that anyway to greet your old pal?" Sutton didn't reply and Jarvis grinned, "Why don't just the two of us sit down and have a drink somewhere. We can catch up on the 'old days' can't we Sutton? - Oh, I'm sorry,.....it's _Ambassador_ Sutton now isn't it?" Sutton turned his back to Jarvis and he quietly asked Kira, "Could you leave us alone Nerys,....._please_?" But she didn't look like she was going to comply. Jarvis said impatiently, "Hurry up Sutton, I haven't got all day." Kira looked at Jarvis and Sutton put his hands on her shoulders asking more earnestly, "_Please_ Nerys." Jarvis grew more impatient and he said, "Just what the hell are you doing way out here anyway,......and with _Bajorans_ of all people!?" Kira tried to push past Sutton to get at Jarvis but Sutton held her firm. "Please Nerys! Let me handle this. I'll.....I'll tell you about it later." Jarvis smiled, "Yes,....you just try and do that Sutton." Kira took one last look at Jarvis then finally turned around and left them. If it had been anyone else but Sutton who had asked her then she wouldn't have backed down so easily. Jarvis led Sutton to a table in the Replimat away from the rest and he got two drinks from a replicator for them. But when Jarvis sat down, Sutton wasn't interested at all in his drink. Jarvis took a sip and smiled, "Yes, it's nice to see you _too_ Sutton." "You should be dead.", he flatly replied. "Well it's not through your lack of trying now is it?" Jarvis leaned closer saying, "You don't want to trust these Bajorans, Sutton. They'll use you for what they want and then they'll cast you aside,....or worse." "What would _you_ know about it!?" Jarvis sat back smiling, "I imagine a person in your position and doing all the business you do is quite wealthy?" "You want money!?" He laughed, "I need much more than that." Sutton angrily replied, "I'll have you put into a Bajoran prison. You'll never get--" "And if you do then a certain data package about you won't have it's timer reset. It would send out its information to some _very_ thankful people." Sutton looked away for a few moments and he turned back to Jarvis saying, "It was _you_ who gave Diora that information about me!" Jarvis smiled wide, "I simply put a little snippet of information right where she'd find it. I must admit that at first I was going to let everything get out but I decided to hang onto the rest of it for a rainy day,.......a day like this one." "You liar! You've been with her on this all along!" "You're wrong Sutton, she doesn't know anything about me. As far as she's concerned she just found the information on her own. Actually,...I thought she did quite well,......for a Bajoran that is." "Why _her_!?" "She looked like the right type I thought. And I'd say that I was correct." Jarvis saw Sutton seething and he added, "You've done a good job of hiding your past I'll admit that, but you know I'm the best between us when it comes to data manipulations. Maybe the Federation has forgotten about what happened but I know at least six star systems off the top of my head who'd be glad to know the 'old' Paul Sutton is still alive. By the way,...I like the new name. It's much better than your real one." "Paul Sutton is _all_ that I am now. The old part of my life is gone forever." "Yes, but it's not forgotten,....at least by me. I'm going to be your friend again Sutton." "You were _never_ my friend." "Well I am now and you're going to help your old friend Ryan Jarvis or face the consequences." Sutton stared at the smug Jarvis for awhile before quietly asking, "What do you want?" "I got involved in a little....'situation' that didn't quite work out. Now I've got assassins after me wherever I go and people trying to sell me out to them. That's where you come in to help me dear old friend. You're going to get me into the Gamma Quadrant and assist me to totally disappear. I know you've got contacts over there that can help me out. I'm sick of looking over my shoulder all the time waiting for a lucky assassin to make his mark." "Why are these people after you anyway?" Jarvis smiled, "What do assassins like to hunt most of all?" "Other assassins." "Exactly." "You should've died with the rest of them long ago." "Well you failed, just like you eventually fail at everything you do Sutton." "Then maybe I should just let these assassins catch up with you." "You're forgetting about that data package." Sutton sighed and reluctantly agreed, "Alright, but I can't take you there myself. The Federation watches over me with a pilot that I have to take with me in the Gamma Quadrant. I don't want anyone else getting involved in this mess." "I don't care _how_ you do it Sutton, just do it. I've run out of hiding places in this Quadrant." "And what do I get for helping you?" "I just might have a subspace transmitter that I could give you that would activate a destruct sequence in the data package. Of course the proper encoded signal has to be sent and the transmitter requires an access code." "How do I know the package will be destroyed?" "You're just going to have to trust me." Sutton looked quite dissatisfied and Jarvis smiled, "Once I'm gone you won't hear from me again Sutton. You can keep your pathetic life with these Bajorans and you can carry on being this 'Ambassador' that everyone here looks up to." Jarvis got up and finally said, "You've got one day to do this Sutton. I'm staying at hostel quarters 62 on this dump and you can reach me there by leaving a message. _Don't_ come visiting." Jarvis walked off leaving Sutton to stare angrily at his back. He clenched his fists on the table and wished he could just strike out at Jarvis but there was a lot more involved here than just Sutton himself. With a deep sigh, he stood up wondering what would be the best way out of this whole situation that this spectre from his past had brought upon him. As he walked slowly along the Promenade he saw Kira come down the staircase from the upper level. It was then he realised that she'd been up there watching the whole meeting between Jarvis and himself. She couldn't have heard anything but Sutton saw the deep concern on Kiras face. He met her at the bottom of the staircase and he quietly said, "We need to talk Nerys." They entered Suttons quarters and Kira eagerly asked, "Who is he Paul? What does he want?" They stood facing each other and he sighed, "Ryan Jarvis. He was once the pilot of a mercenary ship." Sutton went to turn away but Kira gripped his arm and asked, "But what's he got to do with you?" He looked unhappily into her eyes to reply, "Jarvis was part of the mercenary group that I worked in." Kira let go of him and just stared at Sutton for awhile. Then she said with a growing anger in her voice, "Tell me the truth. I want to know _everything_ about you Paul. Don't you leave _anything_ out." He sighed deeply and reluctantly explained, "Long ago I was part of a mercenary team. My job was the pilot of the secondary ship, the backup escape ship for the missions. I never got involved in the fighting because my task was to remain inconspicuous and get the team out should the primary escape route fail." Sutton paused but Kira just regarded him in silence. "I was a lot younger in those days and eager to see some action. There was many times when the primary route was blocked and the only way out for the team was me and my ship. We came close to being caught a lot of times but we came through it all." Sutton stopped again but Kira simply said, "Keep going." "There were various missions,...rescue, recon, technology theft, and so on that we had given to us to keep obvious parties out of the picture. But over time I noticed that the missions changed. You have to understand that everyone was on a 'need to know' basis and since I wasn't directly involved in the actions that meant I was kept in the dark." Sutton took a deep breath and said, "But I found out for myself what was going on. We'd moved away from what we'd normally done and we'd gotten into assassinations. Nobody told me this but I figured it out for myself. I did a lot of covert investigation and it lead me back to one man,....Thomas Bowden. He was an active Vice Admiral working out of Starbase 219 and _he_ was the one in charge of the Mercs." "A _Federation_ officer!?" "I know how it sounds but it's true. He was using the Mercs to assassinate leaders, destabilise political systems, and start wars. I don't know what his aims were but I _do_ know that he was the one responsible." "You expect me to believe this!?" "It's the truth! But the Federation or anyone else for that matter never knew Bowden was responsible. As far as they were concerned he was just another ordinary Vice Admiral." Kira folded her arms and just stared at Sutton. "So I resolved to stop it all, beginning with the Mercs themselves. If any one of them suspected a hint of what I knew or was planning to do then I'd be dead in an instant. I devised a plan that nearly worked out perfectly. I waited until a mission needed me as their escape route and then I simply didn't arrive to pick them up. I believe that they were all caught and the ones that didn't die in the capture were soon after executed. But there was one thing that didn't go to plan. I'd placed an explosive device on the primary escape ship that _did_ go off, but unfortunately it seems it didn't destroy the ship as I planned. There must've been enough time for the pilot to get away in an escape pod or something. - That man was Ryan Jarvis. I don't know the whole story because I had to warp out of there in my own ship to avoid being detected and captured as well." Sutton paused and Kira firmly said, "Don't stop now, keep talking." "The next thing to do was take care of Bowden. It was a lot harder than I imagined but eventually I succeeded. I made it look like an explosive decompression accident. It had to look like an accident because the situation that I was in at the Starbase would've trapped me otherwise. It was no use trying to talk to the Federation about Bowden or the Mercs because I knew he'd have enough lies in place to make him look innocent. But I wanted him to pay." "Did _you_ kill Rarsarn?!" "No, and you must believe me when I say that Nerys. I can't help thinking it was Diora who was responsible." "Why her?" "Jarvis had planted a piece of information that she came across that connected me with Bowdens death on the Starbase." "She's known all this about you!?" "No, only that Bowden had been killed and that I was involved. She doesn't know Jarvis or anything else it seems." "And _that's_ what she's been using to keep you on her leash hasn't it? That's why you backed out of the election?" He nodded, "After Bowden was dead I returned to the Mercs base and destroyed it. I know it sounds like a stupid move but that's how I was feeling at the time." Kira sighed and Sutton said quietly, "There's more." "Go on." "After all that I thought that maybe Bowden might have some sort of countermeasures in place that could have pointed the Mercs out, or maybe he'd arranged something with some other assassins to deal with us, I just didn't know. I figured my best chances of staying alive was to keep a low profile. I worked in a lot of non-Federation jobs but gradually I kept finding myself fighting in other peoples wars. I had all this anger in me Nerys that just wanted justice for everyone, but over time I realised that all these wars were simply the results of political squabbling or grabs for power. So I got away from everyone and everything just so I could be alone for a long time. - I got to hear about the Occupation of Bajor and finally I thought that here was a _just_ war that I could help fight. I studied up on Bajor and it seemed to draw me to it. I _had_ to come here Nerys. But before I'd even started on my way, the Federation and the Cardassians signed the Withdrawal Agreement, and the war ended." She just stood there and didn't utter a single word. "Nerys,.....I know that I'm responsible for the deaths of Bowden and the Mercs. I've made other enemies besides Jarvis but they all think I'm long dead. Jarvis is very capable of carrying out any threats he makes because although I never really knew the rest of the Mercs, Jarvis was one man I always considered dangerous and unstable." "What does he want?" "He took up an assassins job it seems after the Mercs were gone. But he's now got killers on his tail and he wants my help to take him into the Gamma Quadrant and disappear. To make sure I'll do what he says he's got a data package about me hidden somewhere that'll begin transmitting unless he gets what he wants. If that information gets out then everything I've done, everything I've tried to do will have been in vain." Sutton took a deep breath and sighed, "I'm asking for your forgiveness Nerys. I know what I've done has been bad but--" Kira lashed out and slapped Sutton heavily across his face, sending him to crash against a chair. He staggered to his feet and as Sutton held a hand to his painful cheek he quietly said, "You're right........I deserve that." Kira advanced upon him and shouted, "You deserve a hell of a lot more! You've lied to me for all this time!" "No I haven't. I just never told you any of the full story." "That's the same as lying!" He looked into Kira's eyes and he was worried at what he saw in them. She pointed to the door and angrily said, "Get out!" "Nerys I--" "I said get out! Just leave me alone for awhile!" Sutton walked to the door and left, leaving Kira all alone in his quarters. * ************************* * When Sisko entered Odo's Security Office he found him just sitting there deep in thought. But he looked up and asked, "Something I can do for you Commander?" "Just a social call.", Sisko smiled, "I wanted to ask your advice on what I should get as a wedding present for Kira's wedding." "Why are you asking _me_?" "I just thought you'd have a much better idea because you've known Kira for so long." "You've known her for quite some time too Commander." "Yes but--" "Get her...._them_....whatever you like. Whatever it is I'm sure they'll appreciate it." Sisko frowned a little, "Is there something wrong Odo?" He sighed heavily, "This human obsession of giving presents at every occasion seems to me more trouble than it's worth. There's the difficulty of choosing what to give, whether the recipient will like what you've given,...and if you _don't_ offer a gift then you seem to be in even more trouble." Sisko looked at Odo for a few moments and the replied, "Well,..uhhh,...I'll take care of things." "You do that Commander." Then Odo bent down and busied himself with the console on his desk. When Sisko left, Odo sat up and went back to just sitting there deep in thought again. * ******** * Sutton entered his quarters a couple of hours after he'd left it and he found Kira sitting at the table. She followed Suttons every move as he walked slowly over to her and then he sat down opposite Kira feeling a little better knowing there was a table between them. They looked into each others eyes and and she firmly stated, "You lied to me. You can call it whatever you like but you lied to me." Sutton sighed, "How _could_ I tell you Nerys!?" "What else have you lied to me about?" "_Nothing_." Kira just kept staring at him and he slowly got up and went to his bedroom. When Kira followed him inside she found him packing a bag. "What are you doing?", she asked. Sutton didn't reply but continued packing. Kira saw that it was more than just some things to take on a trade conference trip. She grabbed the bag and flung it to the far side of the room sending things flying from it. He turned to face her and found Kira just as angry as before. She quietly commanded, "You're not running away." "I can't stay. The one thing that kept me going through everything was _you_ Nerys. Now that I've lost that there's nothing for me here. I'm leaving before I can hurt you anymore." Sutton went over and picked up his bag then he stuffed the things that had been thrown from it roughly inside. But as he went to walk past Kira, she grabbed the bag and wouldn't let go. They looked at each other for some long moments and Kira exclaimed, "Well are you going to marry me or not!?" Sutton took a deep breath and he sighed, "You'll always think that I lied to you Nerys,....but I haven't. You'll never trust me as I trust you. I _have_ to go,........not for my sake but for yours." "Paul,....listen to me.....okay, so you haven't lied to me but you also haven't told me the truth exactly either. We both know that. I want to marry the man that you are now, not the man you once might have been. But if you stay then you're going to have to be totally open with me and not hide _anything_." Sutton wrenched the bag from her grasp, looked into her eyes, then threw it onto the floor. Slowly Sutton and Kira came together..... * ************************* * Jarvis looked at the message on his viewscreen and he smiled, "Yes,.... you just keep doing what I tell you Sutton, and it'll all work out...." * ************************* * When Jarvis walked to the Runabout airlock indicated by Suttons message, he was a little surprised to see Kira standing there waiting for him. He smiled, "I see Sutton's got you doing his work for him." Kira looked at him coldly and simply replied, "Get inside." After they passed through the Wormhole, Jarvis snidely commented, "After what I'd heard about this wormhole, it turned out to be very dull. Say, aren't your make-believe Prophets supposed to live in it somewhere?" Kira found it very hard to ignore his remarks and she said, "I've laid in the course that the Ambassador gave me." She took a PADD and handed it to Jarvis saying, "All the details are in there." He took it and began reviewing the data with a smile. "Hmmmmm,....a trade planet,...plenty of off-worlders to intermingle with,...access to trade routes,......yes, this should do very nicely for a start." Kira forcefully asked, "What about the transmitter?" "All in good time. How long is it going to take us to get there?" "About nine hours." Jarvis smiled wider, "Nine hours eh? Plenty of time to get to know Suttons girl then." "I'm nobody's _'girl'_!" "Really?" Kira angrily said, "Let's get one thing straight,....you're not going to interfere with the Ambassadors life any more! You'll hand over the transmitter, the data package will be destroyed, and then you can crawl under the nearest rock and never be heard from again!" He sat back and grinned, "My,....what a spirited _girl_ you are." She turned back to the controls seething with anger and Jarvis said, "Tell me,...what is Sutton good for now? You've got your world, you've got your Orbs, and you've become a strong trade presence. Bajor doesn't need Sutton, he _is_ worthless believe me. He's got too many unrealistic ideals, too many dreams, and you know as well as I do that dreamers can't be relied upon. When the time comes, I know that--" "Shut up! Just shut up!" Jarvis smiled, "Think of this then,.....if Sutton _did_ meet his fate when his past caught up with him, Bajor would still go on without him. In fact if Bajor were to voluntarily hand him over to those concerned then you would be looked upon very favourably." Jarvis leaned closer and said in a reassuring voice, "They're strong people who want Sutton. Bajor could do well by aligning itself with them and handing him over. He's only one man after all,.......a useless dreamer." Kira turned slowly to face Jarvis and he smiled wider. * ************************* * It was late at night when Kira returned to DS9 but she knew Sutton wouldn't be asleep. She found him in his Consulate office preparing things for a trade conference. Kira sat down and put an object on the table between them sighing, "It's a low range subspace transmitter. It'd be lucky to be even able to reach Bajor." "Jarvis never said where the data package was located. It could be here on the station or _anywhere_." Sutton took it into his hands and Kira said, "Go on, activate it. I've already keyed in the access code." He hesitated for a few seconds but then pressed the signal button. The device sounded a transmit signal for a moment and then was silent. Sutton put it down and asked, "Do you think he lied?" "About the data package....maybe. About that thing destroying it.....yes." "Why?" "You didn't actually trust him did you?" "Of course I didn't but what else could I do?" "Maybe this data package threat is just that,...a threat. If it is then I'm going to have to live with keeping your past a secret from others......and I'm not going to like having to lie to people I trust, people who trust _me_." She got up and started walking to the door but Sutton quietly said, "Nerys,.....may the Prophets guide you." Kira looked at him and sadly said, "May the Prophets guide us both Paul." * ************************* * * ************************* * * ************************* * * ************************* * * End of book 5 * * "Destiny Foretold" * * ************************* * * ************************* * -end of file-
