(c) 1994 After the last of the passengers from the Bajoran shuttle had filed out into DS9, Kira frowned and looked back at her PADD thinking that her passenger list was wrong. "Hello Nerys.", said a friendly voice. She looked up and saw Sutton exiting the airlock doorway with a cheerful smile on his face. Kira smiled, "For a second there I thought you'd missed the flight." She looked him up and down before saying, "Well, well,...just look at you." He stood in front of her wearing the blue uniform of the new Bajoran Diplomatic Corps and she saw that it was quite a contrast to her own. Kira saw at his Bajoran earring and smiled, "You're the only human to ever be afforded the privilege of rightly wearing one of those." "And I'm honoured by it.", he smiled. "Did you see the ceremony where the Kai presented it to me with with my citizenship?" "I was there." "You were!? I didn't see you!" Kira laughed, "There were a _lot_ of people there! It's not an everyday occurrence you know." They smiled together and she said, "C'mon, I'll show you to your quarters and then take you to the Consulate office." As they walked, Sutton asked cautiously, "I was a bit wary of taking the position, but since it _was_ offered to me at the presentation. I couldn't really say no." "So you don't want the job?" "No, it's just that......well,.....I thought that you might think that my position was infringing on your own duties here." Kira smiled, "If you step on my toes I'll be sure to let you know." They entered a turbolift and he replied, "Thanks Nerys." She held up a finger in front of Sutton and cautioned, "Just one little point......don't call me Nerys when we're on duty. You can call me Major, or sir, or Kira. - Got it?" "Uhhhh, yes sir....Major." She gave an exasperated laugh and smiled, "Will you just relax! It's just protocol. _I'm_ the one that's in the military, you're in the Diplomatic Corps. You're _supposed_ to maintain some informality on occasions." The turbolift door opened and they walked out a short way along a corridor until they came to a door that Kira opened. She led the way inside and said, "Just as you asked, no special treatment. This is a standard single-persons living quarters." He looked around and said, "Pretty bleak,....very Cardassian." She smiled, "What do you expect, the whole station _is_ Cardassian you know." He sighed, "Let's go to the Consulate.", then he added with a smile, "That is, if it's alright with _you_ sir." She leaned closer and smiled, "Don't get too smart with me okay? I outrank you remember?" "Sorry Kira." They smiled and she said, "Then just you consider it a warning, Lieutenant." They left Suttons quarters and entered the turbolift together. As the lift sped along it's way he enquired, "I hope we're still friends?" She looked at him with a puzzled frown, "Whatever gave you the idea we weren't? We're both in uniforms now and there's a certain responsibility that goes along with it together with protocol and discipline." He nodded, "I've never really liked any military before, but for you I'll make an exception." She grinned, "For me or the uniform." But before he could answer, the doors opened and the noise of the Promenade broke the quiet of the turbolift. As they made their way along the Promenade, several people noticed Sutton. It wasn't only just the blue uniform, but it was also the sight of a human who was wearing a Bajoran earring. Many of them commented to each other because they'd recognised him from the ceremony that had been broadcast on local subspace a few days ago. Some Bajorans gave Sutton a respectful nod of their heads as they passed him. He answered them with one of his own. Kira smiled to herself because she saw him looking a bit nervous. Before they reached the Bajoran Consulate office, they met Odo coming the other way. They stopped and Kira smiled, "Odo, I'd like to introduce Lieutenant Paul Sutton, Bajoran diplomatic attache to DS9." Odo huffed, "Bajoran diplomat? That's almost a contradiction in terms isn't it?" Kira smiled and waited to see what Suttons response would be to Odo's deliberate remark. Sutton smiled, "Constable--" "You're _not_ going to call me Constable all the time are you!?" Odo gave a sigh of frustration and let Sutton continue. "Constable...the view that many people have of Bajorans is that they're either past terrorists or simply impossible to deal with. I hope to change those perceptions." "I see. Well then you you have your work cut out for you. Call me if you need a riot or similar event dealt with. My office is open twenty six hours a day. Now if you will _please_ excuse me..." Odo nodded to Kira, and as he walked off she smiled to Sutton, "I think that's Odo's way of saying, 'Welcome to DS9'." When they finally arrived at the Consulate they were just in time to see a large heavy-set Maltorian bang his fist on the table, then turn around and barge his past the two of them. Sutton asked, "Another satisfied customer?" The officer behind the desk sighed, "I'm glad you're here. This place is _all_ yours. I'm happy my transfer _finally_ came through but I'm just sorry it had to be you taking my place." "What do you mean?" "You'll find out soon enough." He came around from behind the desk and gave him an isolinear rod saying, "Here's your access codes. All the information you need for what it's worth, is in the computer. I've left a file on current situations so you should at least have _some_ idea of what's going on around here. If you need to talk to Minister Varol, there's a priority channel available through the comms panel. Now if you'll both excuse me, I have a wife and three children waiting for me on Bajor. May the Prophets look kindly on you." After the man had left, Sutton looked at the rod in his hand and then up at Kira who seemed amused at his situation. He looked around the office and said, "I'm beginning to have second thoughts about this position. Kira, you wouldn't mind swapping places with me would you?" She smiled, "You've being thrown in so you'd better start swimming before you drown. I'll see you later on." After she walked out, Sutton sat down at the chair behind the desk and with a deep sigh he said, "Now let's see how big a job I've gotten myself into." * ************************* * When Kira returned to Ops, Dax and Sisko were looking at some star charts on the situation table. As she joined them, Sisko asked her, "How's Mr Sutton settling in?" "I think we'll know in the next week or two whether he can handle things. The position's a demanding one but I hope he stays with it." Dax smiled, "Oh, and why is that?" "Because if he does as much as he's done for Bajor, then things can only get better." * ************************* * As Sutton frowned at the reports before him, the Consulate doors opened and he looked up to see Quark coming in with a big smile on his face. "My! How handsome you look in that uniform of yours! And they've given you the rank of Lieutenant! Things are really looking up for you Sutton!" He frowned, "What do you want Quark?" He laughed, "Want!? No, you've got it all wrong! I'm here to let you know that if there's anything I can do for you, that you can rely on me to help. If you need anything.....and I do mean _anything_, just let me know and I can fill in those special little requests too." "I see.", Sutton replied flatly. Quark came closer and said quietly, "Of course if you could see your way to helping _me_ out now and then, I could be most generous in showing my appreciation. You _have_ after all used my services before and know I'm capable of delivering what I offer. Ohhh, by the way......you never _did_ pay me for our agreed price to fix that little problem I helped you with awhile back. Do you think you could settle up because I have a slight problem at the moment with my--" "Listen Quark, I'll pay you what I said I would and then that's the end of it." "The end of _what_!?" "You'll forget that we ever did that bit of business together." "And if I don't?" Sutton smiled, "I'm sure Sisko would like to know why his tractor beam failed." Quark laughed, "Sure, go right ahead! You can't prove anything! There's nothing to link me to what happened." They just stared at each other and then Quark relented, "Okay, have it your way, it's forgotten! Now about what you owe me...." Sutton smiled, "I'm afraid I don't have it." "What!?" "Perhaps I could pay you a little each time from my duty allowance, but I'm afraid my position doesn't really allow me much--" "What is this, some kind of joke!? What about those agricultural gizmos that you sold to the Bajorans!?" "I didn't sell them _anything_. I gave them to the people of Bajor along with my services and my ship." "You must be crazy! The Bajorans would've paid _anything_ for that stuff and you just _gave_ it to them for free!?" Quark dismissed Sutton with a wave of his hand and angrily said, "Odo was right, you _are_ a strange one! Okay....I'll accept repayment at a standard twenty percent interest rate." "Five percent." "Fifteen!" "Three." "What!?" "Or would you prefer you got nothing because I'm not about to repay you at any Ferengi rates." "What about eight percent? And that's a _very_ reasonable offer." "Two percent." "Okay, okay!" Quark stood up and smiled, "I think your talents are wasted here in this job. Let me know if you want to branch out anytime." Sutton smiled, "I'll consider it." "Oh, one more thing....Odo's keeping a _real_ close eye on you so you'd better watch your step." "I've got nothing to hide." "You don't know Odo! He's tenacious, he's ruthless, he's......he's _Odo_!" "I'll take good care." "Fine. Come into the bar anytime. Perhaps you could win on the Dabo table and repay me back in just one night." "Or perhaps I could end up doubling my debt. - Sorry, I don't gamble." Quark rolled his eyes saying, "Ohhhh, give me strength here!" Sutton smiled and then Quark quickly asked, "Have you still got those battle holoprograms of yours?" "Why do you ask?" "Because something like that would go over real well with the Klingons who come here." "I could sell them to you for _twice_ what I owe you. I think that would be fair." "Bah! I think a year on Bajor has scrambled your brains! Anyway, you know where my place is so drop by anytime. - Ohh,....and when can I expect my first repayment?" "Next week." "You're killing me, you know that don't you!?" As Quark turned and left, Sutton called out, "Let me know if you want to buy those programs!" But then as Sutton turned back to the reports in front of him, his smile faded. * ************************* * The next day Kira went to the Consulate office and found Sutton working busily with the computer. She sat on the edge of his desk and smiled, "How are things going?" He looked up at Kira and sighed, "I won't bore you with the details but I've had a lot of problems. I've sorted most of them out but there's one that doesn't look like it can be solved. That's why they probably sent it to me." "What is it?" "Bajor's got a claim on a planetoid in the Gamma Quadrant called Toreth. By all accounts it's got plenty of resources available but I just can't get the manpower organised to mine it. My department's responsible for obtaining workers to reside at New Bajor and then make regular trips to Toreth to work it. There's a man, Marel Sarlos, who's been contracting workers to work on a project in the Kolod system for the Janessians. In fact he's supposed to be coming here today on another of one of his worker recruitment missions." "So what's the problem?" "He's convincing workers to join the project, and he's succeeding because the pay is three times as much as Bajor can afford to give workers for Toreth. Bajor needs those resources but without workers it may as just as well not exist." "Have you spoken to Minister Varol about this?" "Kira.....he's a politician. All he told me was that if I couldn't find a solution then I should notify him and Bajor will shelve the project." "Can't they sell Toreth to someone?" "The Gamma Quadrant's a big place with plenty of opportunities. Nobody's interested in buying Toreth when they think they can find a similar planetoid for themselves for nothing. Bajor can't afford the workers but it also can't afford to relinquish title." Sutton sat back in his chair and Kira asked, "What about finding an investor to help?" "The only people interested are the Ferengi, and you know what _their_ conditions are like. Everyone only wants to come into it if they can have a controlling percentage of Toreth, and that includes the Federation. The offer I got from them almost made the Ferengi one look attractive." "I suppose you could appeal to the workers themselves in some way?" Kira's commbadge chirped and Sisko's voice said, "-Major, would you meet me in the Infirmary, please?-" "Acknowledged." She stood up saying, "Well, I've got to go. Nobody said your job would be an easy one." He nodded and she walked smartly out of the Consulate as Sutton closed his eyes to think. * ************************* * Later as Kira was on her way to Ops, she saw a large crowd assembling in QUARK'S. Odo was keeping a watchful eye over things so Kira asked him what was going on. He answered, "They're here to see Marel Sarlos. He'll be here within the hour. Apparently he's very popular by all accounts,.....buying everyone free drinks wherever he goes." Odo shook his head wearily and Kira left him to find Sutton as quick as she could. He wasn't in the Consulate so she tapped her commbadge and said, "Kira to Lieutenant Sutton..." "-Yes Major?-" "Where are you?" "-At the observation port of upper three.-" "I think you'd better get down here to the Consulate....on the double." "-Why?-" "I'll explain when you get here. Kira out." Kira waited impatiently until Sutton arrived. Before he could speak she said quickly, "Listen, Sarlos will be here soon in QUARK'S. I was thinking that--" "I _know_ he'll be here Kira. I've been thinking about it most of the day." "Well,.....what are you going to do?" He smiled, "You were going to suggest something?" As Kira looked at him she slowly smiled then pointed her finger saying, "You've got something planned haven't you. What is it?" "Let's just say that you don't want to know about it." "What?" Suttons commbadge chirped and the computer said, "--" He took a deep breath and said, "Time to earn my keep." Kira frowned as she accompanied him out of the Consulate and they headed towards QUARK'S. The mood in QUARK'S was quite boisterous as workers filled the place on all the levels. Quark was quite annoyed because most of them hadn't ordered any drinks or played at the Dabo table, but he consoled himself with the fact that Sarlos would arrive soon and be buying drinks for everyone. That would loosen them up and Quark was expecting a good nights business from all of this. Sutton and Kira squeezed through the mass of people and managed to make their way in as far as the staircase. The noise levels rose and fell despite Odo's attempts to keep things quiet which amused Quark considerably. A cheer went up and they all looked across to see a man with two heavy-set bodyguards enter the bar. It was Sarlos. He held up his hand and laughed, "Greetings workers!" A pathway was made through the crowd for him by his bodyguards and Sarlos made his way to the table that had been set up for him. He put down his large PADD and called for quiet. Gradually the noise dimmed and he began, "The Janessians have obtained my services to find suitable workers to work under contract in the Kolod system. I've been to many places already and have signed up many workers who are more than happy to work for the Janessians. Now I am here." A big cheer sounded and then quickly faded as Sarlos continued, "I'm only here for tonight however and then I must move on. The contract stipulates a full year agreement with an option to extend that at expiry. If you leave before the year has ended, then you forfeit all pays and bonuses. The Janessians are paying well for your services as you may well already know, and you would indeed be very foolish to pass up this contract. So before I begin with the signing of contracts, are there any questions?" A voice shouted out, "When are the free drinks coming?!" The crowd laughed loudly and Odo was sure it had been Quark who had shouted out but when he looked over to him, he was acting quite innocently which immediately made Odo suspicious. Sarlos said, "Everything in good time. Now, are there any other questions?" Kira was surprised when Sutton loudly spoke up, "Why are the Janessians paying so much?" Sarlos looked at him for a few moments noticing the uniform and the Bajoran earring. "Ahhh yes, Mr Sutton I believe?" He nodded and Sarlos answered, "It's because the Janessians are keen businessmen who know the value of good workmen and aren't ashamed to pay for their services,......unlike the Bajoran Government!" There were peals of laughter and Kira wondered how Sutton would react. As the laughter died down, Sarlos looked very pleased with himself until Sutton asked, "Is it true that the Janessians are building offenses for a possible war with the Kollosians? A war that may possibly break out within the year?" The bar went very quiet and Sarlos laughed, "Where do you hear such things!? As a non-aligned world, the nature of the work done on Janess is entirely their own business. Any rumours you may have heard are just that,....rumours! Besides, What has Bajor to offer these fine workers here!? A mining contract for a planetoid across the other side of the galaxy with pay that's an insult to these hard working people!" The crowd murmured their agreement but Sutton replied, "Toreth _is_ in the Gamma Quadrant but workers will be housed comfortably on New Bajor." Sarlos laughed, "_What_ workers!? No-one has signed up for this charitable work at all!" Another laugh went up and Sutton shouted out, "All workers who contract to work on Toreth will live in good quarters on New Bajor _without_ the threat of a war happening before the year's out!" "Nonsense!" But Sutton pressed on, "There will a fund made from ten percent of all profits from Toreth. At the end of six months, workers will receive an appropriate share of that fund. Should they wish to leave that money in the fund and continue working for a full year, they will be suitably rewarded with a sizeable bonus together with their pays!" There were loud murmurs of discussion now amongst the workers, and Sarlos realised things weren't going as well as they normally did. He shouted out, "The Toreth project isn't even started! The Janessian one is well underway and is taking workers right _now_!" "I admit that Toreth won't start until next month, but workers will have a _safe_ working environment and instead of working for war, they'll be working for _peaceful_ purposes. I urge all workers here to consider carefully before signing with Mr Sarlos. I would hope that you would spread the word of the Bajoran Toreth project to all your fellow workers. Contracts will be available in three weeks time, but if you are just in a hurry for a free drink and a good chance to lose your life before the year is out,.....then Mr Sarlos will happily accept your name on his contracts." Sutton gave a curt nod of his head to Sarlos and then made his way out of QUARK'S with a confused Kira right behind him. Inside the quiet of the Consulate, he sat down on the desk with a loud sigh of relief. Kira frowned, "I didn't know about any of these hostilities between the Janessians and the Kolossians?" Sutton smiled, "I pressured a few people and got the information." "And what about the Toreth project? You didn't tell me of this 'workers fund' or--" "That's because it doesn't exist yet." "What!?" "I had to give the workers enough incentive to want to sign up for Toreth. I'm sure that once there are enough--" "So the project is as dead as it was before!? I thought _Minister Varol_ had arranged the offer you made tonight?!" He shook his head and smiled, "When it becomes apparent the project is viable, then it'll become a reality." "When!? Don't you mean _if_?! And what if it's all a failure!? You're taking one hell of a risk! You can't decide government policy just like _that_!" He stood up, came close to her and said, "Nerys,...have you ever known a politician to _not_ want to take the credit for something good? Varol _will_ take over as soon as I hand it to him in a nice package that he can claim as his own." "And if it all comes crashing down on you?" He smiled, "I have a nice little place on Bajor that I can retire to. You could come and visit me there." "I could wind up visiting you in a Bajoran prison!" Sutton smiled wider, "I'm glad to know that I'd least have you as a visitor then." Before she could say anything, the Consulate doors opened and a couple of the workers who'd been in QUARK'S came inside. One of them said, "We know contracts aren't available for another three weeks, but we'd like to put our names down now if we could." Sutton nodded, quickly took a PADD from his desk and handed it to them. The doors opened again and a few more workers from the meeting entered with the same request. Then as Kira watched, the rest of the entire crowd of workers began coming in and filling up the Consulate office all wanting to put their names down for the Toreth project. As Sutton looked across the packed room, he saw Kira smiling to him, but she obviously was still very concerned. * ************************* * The next day Sutton approached Kira in Ops. She was surprised to see him there but he did have the necessary clearance. Kira was very conscious of Dax watching them closely and so she asked, "Yes Mr Sutton, is there something you want?" "I need transport to Bajor. Minister Varol has recalled me." Kira's eyes widened but he added, "He's called me back to inform me of his plans to go ahead with the Toreth project." She relaxed and tried to suppress her smile as she said, "Wait here, I'll talk to the Commander." As Kira walked up the steps, she couldn't help but look back and smile at him. Then she noticed that Dax was watching her, so she quickly pressed Sisko's door chime and entered. Dax smiled to him, "I trust everything's going well for you?" He nodded, "I wouldn't say that the last couple of days have been easy for me by any means." "If things were easy, then _none_ of us would be here." She motioned with her finger and he turned to see Kira say to him from Sisko's doors, "The Commander wants to speak with you." When he entered the office, Kira came with him and he found Sisko sitting behind his desk comfortably reclined with his hands clasped in front of him. Sisko said, firmly, "Mr Sutton, I'll be honest with you....when your name was forwarded to handle the Bajoran Consulate here, I was against the idea. Your previous conduct a year ago is _not_ what I find acceptable in station staff. However.....this station is technically Bajoran and as such, I have to listen to the wishes of the Bajoran Government..." Sisko glanced at Kira then continued, ".....as well as _others_. So let me tell you now, if you act in any way that I consider is detrimental to this station, I _will_ throw you off! Is-that-clear?!" "Yes sir." "Proceed to airlock four. Dr Bashir and Chief O'Brien will meet you there. Dismissed." Sutton nodded to Sisko and left with Kira who said to him, "Follow me, I'll show you the way." As they walked along a deserted access corridor, Kira suddenly turned and stood right in front of Sutton. She said forcefully, "I hope you understand what the Commander said to you back there because if you _do_ foul things up, then it just won't be _your_ head on the block. If I think it needs doing, then friend or not, I will _personally_ throw you off the station myself!" "Yes sir.", he answered in surprise. Bashir and O'Brien came around the corner and saw them standing there together. O'Brien asked cautiously, "Everything alright, Major?" She gave a little smile, "Everything's fine, Chief. He's all yours." Kira turned and marched off as Sutton wondered what the scene must have looked like to the other two. Bashir smiled, "Well, I must say you look a lot different than the last time I saw you." As they walked onwards together, O'Brien asked, "So how does it feel to be a Bajoran citizen?" Sutton just smiled and O'Brien laughed, "_That_ good huh!?" They took their positions in the Runabout and Sutton sat in an off-side seat. After a quick pre-flight check, they were on their way to Bajor. Bashir spun his chair around and said to Sutton, "We're on our way to drop off some medical supplies and materials. Since the re-introduction of viable agriculture and re-generation of the lands, sickness has dropped off rather dramatically. And it's no small thanks to you, Mr Sutton. Do you know what they call you?...'The Healer of Bajor'.....I suppose it's a reference to healing the planet rather than--" O'Brien cut in, "Where exactly are you going to?" "The capital,....Minister Varol's section. The plans for the Toreth mining project are going ahead." As Sutton sat back and idly listened to Bashir recount medical hazards involved with planetoid mining over the past 30 years, his thoughts turned to Kira and the way she had made it clear to him to conform. Would she really throw him off the station if she thought it necessary? Sutton smiled to himself and decided she would. It was clear to him now that he couldn't use the excuse of the end justifying the means as he had done so a year ago. If things needed to be done, he would have to be more circumspect about it. * ************************* * When Sutton finally returned to DS9 the following night on a transport shuttle, he decided to tell Kira himself of the talks with Varol. But when he entered Ops, Sutton found Kira angrily speaking to someone on a viewscreen. He made his way over to Dax and asked quietly, "What's going on?" "A Bajoran exploration vessel,...well that's what we think it was, returned from the Gamma Quadrant with all the crew members sick. It's serious because when Julian tried to treat them, they all had adverse reactions. One of them has died. Odo and Benjamin are in the Gamma Quadrant right now trying to find out what they might have picked up from their last planetfall." "And what's happening with Kira?" "Red tape. They're refusing to release the crews' medical records." As Sutton stepped up beside Kira, she shouted to the man on her viewscreen, "I _have_ the authority as Liaison Officer!" The man simply replied, "-The information you seek is not available to you. Unless you are an authorised--" "Damn the authorisation! One man is dead and the others may be dying!" "-I can't release the information.-" Sutton smiled, "Excuse me, Major." He gently but firmly pushed against Kira's shoulder and she turned sharply around with an angry look on her face as he moved her aside. Sutton looked at the viewscreen and said to the man, "I would suggest re-considering your actions. Release that information _now_." The man looked at him for a few moments before recognising him from the broadcasting of the ceremony. He smirked, "-It doesn't matter _who_ you are because without express authorisation, I _won't_ release anything.-" "And who can give that authorisation?" "-I can't give you that information.-" Sutton leaned closer and said calmly, "I know a few ministers in the Government,....perhaps you'd enjoy being in charge of records in a prison? I'll give you thirty seconds to decide before I contact them." The man thought hard for a few long seconds before answering, "That won't be necessary. I'll transmit the information you've requested right away." The screen went blank and Dax said, "Here it is, it's coming through now." Sutton found himself roughly spun around by Kira and she seethed, "Don't you _ever_ do that to me again!" "I was--" "_I'm_ in charge here and you _don't_ side-step my authority! If I want your help then _I'll_ ask for it!" Kira finished her attack on him by growling, "Dismissed Lieutenant!" He looked at her for a second, then quickly went to the turbolift and descended. Dax said quietly to Kira, "Don't you think you were a little hard on him? After all, he managed--" "Just get that information to Doctor Bashir!" She stormed off up into the Commanders Office leaving Dax and the Ops personnel to look at each other in awkward silence. * ************************* * The next day as Sutton was wading through more official documents on the Consulate computer, the doors opened and Kira walked slowly in. He glanced at her but continued on with his work as she slowly and reluctantly walked up to the desk. She said calmly, "Remember when I said that if you stepped on my toes I'd let you know? Well,.....you stepped on them last night." He kept working at his console and ignored her. Kira said, "I may have been a bit harsh but--" "A bit harsh.", he quietly echoed. "Listen, I'm here to apologise!" He looked up at her and she asked, "Will you accept my apology or not!?" "No." "No!?" She looked at him hard and then turned round to leave but he said, "I'll accept your apology on one condition." She turned around and waited. "_If_ you have dinner with me.", Sutton smiled. Kira frowned and shook her head saying, "Uhhh no,....I don't think so." He went back to his console and returned to working as she stood there alone in the middle of the room. After a short while he heard the doors open. Kira left without saying another word. Sutton sat up in his chair and sighed with resignation. He got up and went to the Infirmary to see how the crew members were doing. Kira was there but she and Sutton only exchanged a long, silent look at each other before he asked Bashir, "What's their condition?" "Well, the Commander found that all of the crew had been on an unexplored planet. It appears there's a natural micro-organism that affected the crew, but the strange thing about is that it's not lethal unless combined with reactive agents during treatment for the primary symptoms. Of course we didn't now that at the time, but since then we've managed to synthesise an anti-viral agent that will kill the organism present in the body. It also will act as immunisation if administered before the organism is encountered." "I see." "The organisms only seems to affect Bajorans and a couple of other races, so it was quite a puzzle at first. But the crew will recover alright." "What about humans?" "The organisms have no effect at all on humans." "Thanks Doctor." Sutton and Kira glanced at each other before he left and she watched him walk out, not even hearing Bashir asking if everything was alright. * ************************* * Kira looked up from her station in Ops to see Sutton arriving on the turbolift. They looked at each other for a few long moments before he turned and asked O'Brien if Sisko was in his office. O'Brien nodded and as Sutton began walking to the steps, the doors opened and Sisko emerged to say, "Ahh, Mr Sutton, I've been expecting you. Major, would you join us please?" She frowned but followed Sutton up the stairs. When the doors had closed, O'Brien shook his head saying, "What's their problem?" Dax just smiled and went back to her work. Inside, Sisko said to Sutton, "Congratulations on the Toreth project. Once you get to New Bajor--" "You're leaving!?", Kira said in surprise. Sutton said quietly, "I'll be at New Bajor for two weeks arranging workers accommodations and preliminary transport arrangements." Sisko said to Kira, "I'd like you to accompany him there in a Runabout. You'll be going to administer the serum that Doctor Bashir has made. He'll brief you on the procedure before you leave." She looked at Sutton and said, "Commander, I'd prefer it if you chose someone else for this mission." "Is there a problem here?" She didn't answer but Sisko noticed they were looking away from each other. He sighed, "If you two have _any_ personal problems for this mission then you'd better let me know here and now." They were silent and so Sisko exclaimed, "Good! Major, report to Doctor Bashir. Mr Sutton, the Consulate has been granted an aide by the Bajoran Government. He'll be tending to affairs while you're away. I suggest you brief him before you leave." Sisko took one last look at them both and frowned, "Dismissed." * ************************* * As Kira piloted the Runabout away from DS9 with Sutton sitting beside her, there wasn't a word spoken between them. In fact they hadn't said a word to each other since their meeting with Sisko. The Runabout entered the Wormhole and after the spectacular journey through it, they emerged into the Gamma Quadrant where Kira set their course for New Bajor. Sutton got up and left her, going into the lounge section where he reclined on a couch seat and studied his PADD. After awhile, Kira came in and sat on a seat nearby. He felt her watching him so he put down his PADD and looked at her. She said quietly, "Paul....we need you.....I...I mean _Bajor_ needs you." He sat up and Kira added sincerely, "I trust you." Sutton sighed, "I know you don't give your trust easily Kira,....but you don't really need me. I may as well stay on New Bajor." "What are you talking about?" She'd noticed that he hadn't called her 'Nerys' and that made her feel uneasy. "Are the last two days going to be an indication of what I'll have to put up with? If it is, then I don't think I want to carry on." "You're just going to give it all up!?" "It's my choice." "Is it because of......._me_?" He sighed, "I'm just not used to following stupid rules and regulations. I never will be. If I see that I can do good, then I don't give a damn about any bureaucrats' ramblings." "So I've noticed. Do you think that _I_ like it any better than you? I don't, but I have to work within the system. - Listen, we each need someone we can depend on and trust. I was rather hoping you _did_ trust me." He smiled a little, "I _do_ trust you Nerys." She smiled with him and said, "Then don't give up. Work _with_ me. We may not always agree on everything and we may argue, but that's the way it goes. I _know_ you want to do what's best but just remember that there _are_ many ways of doing things." Kira waited expectantly for Sutton's reply but instead he asked, "Last night--" "I'm _sorry_ for last night. I'm not saying it won't happen again, but I _am_ sorry. I'm not afraid to admit I can be wrong. Are you?" Sutton smiled, "I still won't accept your apology unless we have dinner." Kira's eyes narrowed and she said, "I'll _consider_ it." He nodded and she added, "If you quit, then you may never get that dinner." They smiled together, then he picked up his PADD and asked, "Where do you think we should site the workers camp?" * ************************* * They were billeted at the colonists homes on New Bajor and Sutton found it surprising similar to Bajor in terms of how hospitable the Bajorans were. Kira seemed to relax a lot more and so did he, which made their work a lot more enjoyable. It didn't take Kira too long to inoculate all the colonists and instruct their small medical team on the newly discovered virus. Once that task was completed, she felt that they were now safer. Their days were spent mapping out the location of the new workers facility and then tending to the construction once the supplies freighter had arrived, together with the necessary construction workers. In a relatively short time the facility was completed. As they stood on a hilltop looking down at what had been built, Kira said to Sutton, "That should satisfy your workers." "_My_ workers?" She smiled, "Well you _did_ convince them to come here." He smiled back, "And you convinced _me_ to convince them." Kira grinned, "It's time to go back to the station. I take it you _are_ coming back,......or have you decided otherwise?" "Just as long as you join me for dinner." Kira laughed, "You don't give up, do you!? C'mon, let's go." "And dinner?" She turned back to him and smiled, "Ohhhh alright, I'll join you for dinner, nothing private mind you." "I wouldn't dream of it.", he smiled. Kira looked at him warily, then grinned, "Computer,....two to beam up." * ************************* * When Kira returned to Ops, Dax smiled, "Did you enjoy your holiday?" "Holiday?" But then Kira realised that Dax had been joking. Kira sighed, "The workers facility is constructed on the other side of New Bajor from the colonists. We thought it best to give the colonists their peace." "_We_?", Dax smiled. Kira smiled with her, "Yes, _we_. Now bring me up to date on what's been happening here while we've been gone." * ************************* * In the Consulate, Sutton found not one aide, but _two_ of them working there. Relen Milos he had met briefly before the trip, but the new one, a woman, was new to him. For some reason she she didn't strike him as an aide but he couldn't figure out why. Maybe it was the way she carried herself or the way that Relen related to her that puzzled him. She introduced herself by saying, "Aris Meira. I was appointed by the Diplomatic Section as an extra aide for this Consulate." "I thought there was only going to be one aide, and that was Relen?" She smiled, "Consulate responsibilities are to be expanded. It was decided that we be posted as permanent staff to cover the extra duties." "Well I suppose I _could_ use a little extra help at times." "You're our superior officer and you can't be expected to do everything yourself. Relen and I will assist you." She handed Sutton a PADD saying, "Here are some matters that require your attention." Amongst the items listed was one that caught his eye. He asked, "What's this about attending a trade conference next month?" "The Lanassians from the Gamma Quadrant wish to explore the possibilities of trade agreements with Bajor." Sutton smiled, "Lanassia was where I obtained the reclamators for Bajor. I'll look forward to that meeting." He looked further down the list and asked, "19:00 to 19:30......reserved?" "Major Kira has made a request for that time period." He smiled, " Okay, I can see that things are well taken care of here. But if there's _any_ problems, I want to know about them personally." Relen and Aris nodded and Sutton left with the PADD. Relen said to her, "I don't think he imagines you're just an aide." She scowled at him, "Your thoughts aren't required on the matter." "Yes, sir." * ************************* * As Sutton waited by the airlock entrance, Odo arrived and asked, "May I ask what your interest is in these docking procedures?" "I'm here to receive a package from Bajor. Diplomatic matters." "Hah! Diplomatic matters....frankly, I don't see you as a diplomat, Mr Sutton." "What _do_ you see me as then?" "I'll reserve judgement on that." The sound of docking clamps clanking as they engaged signalled the arrival of the Bajoran passenger shuttle. Soon the airlock door rolled open and the people filed out as Odo kept a close eye on them. A young Bajoran man almost walked by but Odo reached out and grabbed his arm saying, "Your business here?" "My business? I'm....I'm...." "You're Setas Ralvo, a thief and a con man. You _won't_ be staying on _my_ station!" Setas saw Sutton standing there so he pleaded, "Please! I'm being victimised here! I haven't done anything wrong!" Odo laughed, "Your reputation precedes you I'm afraid." Setas shouted at Sutton, "As a diplomat, I demand you do something!" Odo and Sutton looked at each other for a few seconds but then Sutton said, "I trust Odo in these matters. Constable, you may do with him as you wish." Odo almost smiled and he roughly marched Setas back into the ship saying to the crewmen inside, "_This_ one goes back with you." A man stepped out of the shuttle and handed Sutton a slim container before returning back inside. He tucked it under his arm and left as he heard Setas still trying unsuccessfully to argue his case with the crewmen. * ************************* * In his quarters, Sutton keyed in his personal diplomatic access code into the containers' control panel, and it snapped open to reveal a package of isolinear rods. He pulled the first one out and placed it into his computer terminal. Minister Varol's face appeared on the screen and said, "Mr Sutton, things have changed a little since our last meeting. The Diplomatic Section has assigned another aide to the Consulate, Aris Meira. With yourself and the two aides, the Consulate should be able to handle the greater amount of duties that will be assigned to that position. Bajor has recently had several tentative approaches by various Gamma Quadrant worlds wishing to express interest in establishing trade links. As you may imagine, such information is to be kept strictly confidential amongst you and your staff. Should word get out, Bajor could stand to lose substantial gains in trade. As you have previously travelled in the Gamma Quadrant, it was felt you would be better equipped to handle these cautious approaches. A representative of various Gamma Quadrant systems has requested an exclusive meeting with you next month and they specifically stated that they will not deal with anyone else. I should stress that Bajor views these trade talks as being highly desirable and so it's to be given your highest priority. You will find in this dispatch, the information we have at this time on the preliminary trade interests. You are to study them and give your recommendations to each. Once completed, you are to return this dispatch in the same manner as it arrived. Contact this office and quote, 'Procedure 294'. A courier will be sent to pick up this dispatch on the next available transport." The message ended then Sutton pulled the rod out and tapped it idly against his fingers as he thought of what was happening. It was late when he finally finished with the dispatch and he put all the rods back into the container before re-sealing it. When he arrived at the Consulate, only Relen was there as he stored it away in the Consulate security compartment. Sutton asked, "Where's Aris?" "Off-duty, sir." "I see. Contact Varol's office and tell them from me, 'Procedure 294'." "Sir?" "Don't worry, they'll understand." "I'll do that, sir. Goodnight." "Goodnight, Relen." Sutton walked out and tapped his commbadge to say, "Sutton to Kira..." "-Kira here.-" "I believe you wish to speak with me, Major?" There was a pause and then she replied, "-I'll meet you on the Promenade level at turbolift 2 in ten minutes. Kira out.-" When Kira arrived she smiled, "That was quite a diplomatic approach when you contacted me. Who said you can't be a diplomat?" They smiled together and she added, "Now you have me as you dinner companion, where do you suggest we eat? And you had better not say 'in your quarters' or else I'm leaving." He smiled, "I think you misinterpret my intentions, Major. Let's make it simple.....somewhere neutral....QUARK'S?" "QUARK'S!?" "Well, he _does_ have the best replicators on the station and I'm sure we can get a table on one of the upper levels out of the way." Kira frowned deeply for a moment but said, "Okay, QUARK'S it is then." When they entered QUARK'S, Sutton went up to the bar and Quark said, "Mr Sutton, what brings you to my establishment?" "I'm having dinner with Major Kira." Quark quickly leaned over the bar and saw Kira standing there with a look that said that she wanted to be anywhere but _here_. "Major, this is quite a pleasure! You don't come here that often." "You've noticed that have you?" Sutton smiled, "We'd like a table on one of the upper levels. A quiet one." Quark hesitated, "I don't know, I don't think we have any avail--" But Sutton leaned close and slid one of his holoprogram rods towards Quark saying, "I'm _sure_ you have something for us." With a quick movement, the rod was gone and Quark smiled, "Oh silly me! Of course we have a table for you. In fact we have a table that's _perfect_ for you. Rom! Show these two people to table 3 on the upper level." "Uhhhhh, yes brother!" As they sat at their table, Rom presented Sutton with a PADD and said, "If you would like to order...." Sutton smiled and handed it to Kira saying, "Perhaps you'd like to order for us both." She looked at him suspiciously for a moment but keyed in some selections and then handed it to Rom. Rom asked, "And....something to drink?" Sutton replied, "A bottle of Dal'th wine. _Real_, not replicated." Rom nodded and quickly rushed off leaving Kira to ask Sutton, "Dal'th wine?" He smiled, "I got used to it on Bajor at mealtimes." She smiled, "What _else_ did you get used to?" "Having company for dinner." "Then make the most of it because this'll be the _only_ time you'll be having dinner with me." "If that is so Nerys, then I will indeed be sorry." She sighed, "Don't get me wrong Paul, I like you and I admire what you've done for Bajor but--" At that moment Rom returned with their order which he proudly announced as he placed the plates down before them, "Bajoran Orlat stew, the best you'll find on the station, and....a bottle of our finest Dal'th wine. Enjoy!" Kira exclaimed, "That was quick!" He scuttled off and Sutton smiled to Kira, "Please continue." "Do you want to enjoy this dinner or not?" "I'm sorry." They began eating and Kira noted, "At least the food's halfway good." They ate in silence for awhile until he said, "Do you know I've been assigned a new aide to help my first one?" "Is this some attempt at smalltalk?" He laughed, "No, it's just that I'm a bit uneasy over one of them." "What do you mean?" "I don't know. She doesn't fit in with my impression as an aide. I checked her service records and they _seem_ to be in order." "Then what's the problem?" He smiled, "I was hoping you could do a more detailed check on her for me. My security level isn't high enough." "So, you're asking me for a favour?" He nodded and she surprised him by saying, "Alright. I'll look into it for you. What's her name?" Sutton keyed his PADD before handing it over saying, "Her service records are in here." "Is this her, Aris Meira?" "Yes." "There's something familiar about her....I don't know whether it's the face of the name." Kira put aside the PADD and asked, "Why didn't you go to Varol on this?" "Because I'd rather come to you. Besides, for all I know it was Varol who assigned her." "Are you sure you're just not just getting paranoid?" "I'd just like to be sure." He poured them both a glass of wine and said, "I suppose you usually have dinner alone?" "What's _that_ supposed to mean?" "Nothing, I was just asking." "Listen, we're having this dinner because I think I'm obliged to do so, nothing more." Things became quiet after that and when dinner was finished they got up together then walked down the spiral staircase. Quark rushed up to them asking, "I trust the meal was to your satisfaction?" They nodded and Kira said, "I'll pay for my half." Sutton replied, "No, it was _my_ idea for dinner, I'll pay." Quark smiled and held out his hands saying, "The dinner is on-the-house with my compliments! I'll look forward to your next dinner here together!" Kira rolled her eyes and began walking out but Sutton grabbed Quark and asked quietly, "What do you mean, 'on-the-house'! Give me back my holoprogram then!" "C'mon, you don't fool me! You were out to impress the lady! Do you want me to call her back and tell her you paid for it with a holoprogram!?" Sutton let go of him and said angrily, "That was worth a lot more than just a meal!" Quark chuckled, "I'll take some off of what you owe me then." Sutton didn't have time to bother with Quark anymore and he quickly rushed outside to find Kira. Quark turned to Rom and smiled, "They'll be back, mark my words. And Rom remember this,....'all's fair in love and war and weekly profit margins'." Sutton caught Kira before she entered a turbolift and he said, "Nerys, about that favour...." "I'll do it tomorrow." Kira saw his reaction and she said, "You want it done tonight? Okay then, we can use a terminal in Ops." "I was hoping we could do it somewhere a little more private, such as the Consulate office." "If this is some idea to--" "No, it's nothing like that! I just want nobody else to know what we're doing." Kira sighed, but followed him to the Consulate. Relen had finished for the night which suited Sutton fine and they so they had the quiet, empty place to themselves. Kira accessed the computer using her security codes and Sutton watched as they scanned for Aris's records. She said, "Nothing unusual. Let's try something else....Computer, scan Bajoran Military records for the same person." There was a short pause and then the computer responded. "" "Search Bajoran Archives." There was a much longer pause and then the answer came back. "" "Alright then, search all Bajoran records and advise of completion time." "" She looked up at Sutton and said, "I don't suppose--" But the computer interrupted her by saying, "" They looked at the screen and Kira said, "I don't think we'll find any other records." "Why not?" "Because that reference is to Bajoran Intelligence. It seems your new aide may be working for them. What have you been up to?" "Nothing!" He looked at her and came closer saying, "Nerys, I trust you. Only Consulate staff and Varol's section are supposed to know what I'm about to tell you. A trade delegate from the Gamma Quadrant will be here next month and it could lead other Gamma Quadrant systems into agreements with Bajor." "I thought the Federation liked to secure most trade agreements?" "They do, and that's what makes these initial talks so important. If all goes well, Bajor will be in a direct position of trade with systems of the Gamma Quadrant and there won't be any Federation or Ferengi traders getting in the way." "Well that's it then. The Government has put someone here to keep an eye on you." They waited till the search was over, but Kira was right, there were no more references besides one designated, 'Missing or destroyed during the Occupation'. She smiled, "It's a usual ploy by the Intelligence Section to throw people off. If I hadn't already known about it then it might have fooled me too." Kira turned to Sutton and said, "So that's the answer to your mystery then. There doesn't seem to be anything to worry about." "But _you're_ not the one being watched." She got up and said, "I'm going to bed. I suggest you do the same. It's just someone's idea of verifying you that's all. The more you worry about, the worse it'll be. Goodnight." As Kira left, she noticed Sutton had sat down and he looked like he was deep in his own private thoughts. * ************************* * The next morning as Kira was on her way to Ops, her commbadge chirped and a worried voice said, "-Major Kira,...Consulate Officer Relen here. I think you'd better come down to the Consulate right away, sir. As quick as you can.-" "What's wrong?" "-It's best if you see for yourself, sir.-" "Alright, I'm on my way." When she arrived at the Consulate, Relen was standing outside the closed doors. Kira could see inside that Sutton was arguing loudly with Aris. Relen worriedly said, "He was here when we arrived for duty this morning. He told me to get out, and then he began arguing with Aris. I thought it best to advise you first Major, rather than call Security." "Do you know what it's all about?" "I thought I'd leave that up to you, sir." "Alright, wait here." The doors opened and as Kira walked inside, Aris looked at her with a feeling of relief saying, "Major, I'm glad you're here." Sutton looked at Kira for a moment but then he continued shouting at Aris, "And don't you deny that aren't spying on me! If you had any--" "Quiet!", Kira shouted. When there was silence, she asked, "What's going on Paul!?" "I found sensitive records that were due to have been sent to Minister Varol today had been looked at. I _know_ because I put a passive security code on the records to show if they'd been accessed....and I was _right_ about my suspicions!" Aris relented, "Alright, I _am_ observing you but it's only to ensure that--" "That I do what's expected of me! Can't you see that my sole concern is for Bajor!" Aris snapped, "Some of your past actions--" "My past is just _that_, my past!" Sutton grabbed his commbadge and slammed it down on the desk saying, "If I can't be trusted, then find someone else!" He stormed out of the office, nearly knocking Relen over in the process as he hurried off. Kira looked at Aris accusingly for a moment and then rushed off to try to find Sutton. She went to the most logical place he might be and found Sutton in his quarters packing his personal things. She said angrily, "What the hell are you doing!?" Sutton sealed his bag and put it over his shoulder before turning to Kira saying, "I'm sorry Nerys, but I'm leaving." "Leaving!? Don't you think you're over-reacting!?" "Am I!? I've done everything I can for Bajor and _still_ I'm not trusted!" "It's just their way. I'm sure that once--" "Once the trade talks are finalised, yes! I'm being _used_ Nerys! I'm the _only_ one that the delegate will deal with, and the Bajoran Government wants to make sure I do everything _their_ way! You didn't have to go through all those briefings I got in that dispatch! They want the agreements alright, but on _their_ terms and without any consideration for the Gamma Quadrant systems!" He made his way past Kira but she grabbed his arm and shouted, "Don't you do this to me! I put myself on the line for you here and you're walking out on us all!" "I'm sorry Nerys. _You_ I trust, the others I don't." Sutton pulled away from her but before he left the room he turned to Kira and angrily spoke, "And do you know what _else_ Aris said!? The Government had the powers to revoke my citizenship if I didn't comply with their wishes!" The door closed and Kira stood there for a few moments before she tapped her commbadge and ordered, "Kira to Relen.....don't let Aris leave that office! I'm on my way!" When Kira arrived back at the Consulate, Aris was sitting down in a calm and relaxed manner as Relen paced the room. As soon as she entered, Kira stated firmly, "Relen, stay on the door outside. No-one is to come in, understand!?" "Yes sir." As he left, Kira came close to Aris and angrily demanded, "I want to know what's going on and I want to know now!" Aris smiled, "I'm a Colonel in Bajoran Intelligence, Major....and I don't have to answer for anything to you." Kira pulled Aris up roughly by the front of her uniform and slammed her into the wall shouting, "You listen here! Bajor's best hopes of being strong have just walked out that door when Sutton left! If you don't start talking _right_ now, you won't be leaving this room the same way you came in!" By the time she was finished with Aris, Kira had everything she needed, and as a final act of how she felt, she literally threw Aris out of the Consulate office. As Kira sat down in front of the comms panel, her commbadge chirped and Sisko's voice asked, "-Major, you haven't turned up for duty. Is everything okay?-" "I'll......I'll be a little late Commander...but I'll be there soon. There's some......personal matters I have to attend to first." "Nothing serious I hope?" "Everything's fine. Kira out." Kira accessed the comms panel and said, "Major Kira Nerys, Bajoran Liaison on Deep Space Nine......I need to be put in contact urgently with the Kai." * ************************* * Ariston 2 wasn't much of a planet. In fact is was one of those places off the main lines of regular starship routes to make it quite a backwater world. It's only reason for existence was as a meeting place for merchant ship crews who's activities might otherwise arouse the suspicions of normal customs protocols. As Sutton walked back to his rented shack on the edge of town, another dust storm was beginning to blow in from the east. He pulled his hood down because he knew it would hit before he got inside. The wind howled as he opened the door and rushed inside. He slammed the door shut, activated the light, and pulled back the hood to shake the dust out of his hair that had filtered through. "Hello.", said a voice behind him. He instantly turned around with a phaser in his hand to see Kira and Aris sitting on his rough bed. They stood up and Kira saw that Sutton wasn't wearing his Bajoran earring. This bothered her more than the fact that despite recognising them, he still hadn't lowered his phaser. Kira said quietly, "Are you going to use that thing?" He looked at them for a short while, then slowly put the phaser on a table stating in an unfriendly voice, "What are you two doing here? How did you find me?" Kira looked at Aris and said, "Firstly, I believe she has something to say to you." Aris took a deep breath and said, "I'm sorry." Kira quietly ordered, "That will be all, Lieutenant." Aris nodded, tapped her commbadge and said, "One to beam up." Aris disappeared in a blue beam and Sutton concentrated his blank gaze at Kira. She came closer saying, "It's been three months. It's taken us this long to find you because you cover your tracks very well." "It's an acquired skill." Kira looked at him and despite his unkept appearance, he hadn't changed at all. She said quietly, "You're not wearing your earring...." He reached into his pocket and pulled it out. As Sutton held it in his open palm he said, "I always carry it with me, but I didn't think it was right that I should wear it." Kira came close, took it from his hand, and was about to put it on him when he reached up and stopped her. She looked at him with her dark eyes then he slowly put his hand down and Kira clipped it to his ear. Standing back, Kira said, "You don't ever have to take it off, Paul." Sutton looked at her sadly so she smiled, "Your citizenship is now irrevocable. You're a Bajoran citizen and always will be. Minister Varol and several others have been dismissed from office after investigations found that they were secretly trying to organise a trade cartel that would have had themselves as the sole controlling body. Aris has been demoted for her part in the affairs and the Diplomatic Corps has been re-structured." They looked at each other in silence and Kira still saw that he was unmoved. She continued, "If you accept it,.....you're to be given Ambassador status along with the title. It's hoped that your first task as Ambassador will be to establish trade relations with the Gamma Quadrant in whatever ways you deem is fit for the best interests of all concerned." Kira took out a small device from her pocket and gave it to him saying, "I'll be back in this sector in two days time. If you wish to return, activate the transmitter and I'll know. If I don't see that signal,....then no-one will come to bother you again." She tapped her commbadge and said, "One to beam up." As she disappeared in a blue haze of light, Sutton looked down at the small transmitter in his hand. * ************************* * Kira tried to be calm as she returned to the Ariston system. Even now, two days later, she couldn't be certain of the outcome despite all the work she had done to achieve this stage of affairs. She still had the same feelings of trust for Sutton that she had formed long ago, but she still wasn't sure what his decision would be. Kira realised he had felt betrayed and it had made her efforts all the more forceful. So it all came down to a simple choice of yes or no, and Kira was glad that she was alone so no-one else could see the deep worry in her. Kira put the ship in place above Ariston 2, then took a deep breath and activated the scanner. The reading was positive. Trying not to rush, she located his co-ordinates, beamed him aboard, and turned around to smile, "Welcome aboard......_Ambassador_." * ************************* * Suttons return to DS9 was very uneventful and Kira knew that he preferred it that way. When she showed him his new quarters, he was surprised that it was much larger and more well appointed than his old one. Kira smiled, "These quarters are befitting for an Ambassador.", and before he could say anything, Kira added, "It goes with the job, so don't argue." Sutton smiled, "Was I about to?" "There's some things I should point out to you.....it's fairly common knowledge why you left. I'm sure that if everything was covered up you wouldn't have liked it." He nodded. "The first trade talks are scheduled for next week." "And what if I hadn't decided to return?" Kira smiled a little self-consciously, and then continued, "Once the Federation learned of it all three months ago, they tried to negotiate trade agreements but failed. The Ferengi didn't fare any better. It seems the delegate would only deal with _you_, for reasons that they never made clear." Sutton simply nodded. "You've got _full_ security clearance so whatever you wish to access, you can. And lastly, your position carries with it the rank equal to that of a Commander." Kira gave a little smile, "Which makes me a subordinate officer to you now." "I'll never use my higher ranking against you Nerys. You have my word on that." Then he added with a smile, "Even if you _do_ step on my toes." She grinned, "So,.....does this mean that if you order me to have dinner with you, I have to comply?" He didn't answer and they just smiled at each other. She changed the subject and said, "Once you're cleaned up, I expect Sisko would like to see you. There's new clothes on your bed and there's this...." Kira took an isolinear rod from her pocket and handed it to him saying, "I believe it's to seen only by you." Sutton put a hand on her shoulder and smiled, "Thank you, Nerys." She smiled at him, "I won't let you run out on me again." "I don't intend to." "See that you don't Ambassador, or next time you just might have to use that phaser of yours on me." He gently squeezed her shoulder then she turned and left him to change, feeling far better than she had in the past three months. * ************************* * After he'd showered and cleaned the dust of Ariston 2 off of himself, he found the dark blue clothes that he was expected to wear were more robe-like than any uniform he'd ever had. A commbadge lay atop the clothes there for him and when he picked it up, he smiled. It was the same one that he had worn before because he could see a small dent in it from when he'd slammed it down on the Consulate desk. He realised that Kira had decided to make him wear this commbadge rather than replicate a new one, and he could see her thoughts behind it. Once he had changed, he placed the rod into a terminal and the screen came to life with a recorded message. It was the Kai herself, and she spoke calmly and assuredly, "Since you are seeing this Paul Sutton, you have agreed to return to us. Please accept my personal apologies for any displeasure that the past events may have caused you. I hope the amends we have made have gone in some way to show you that we still value your services to Bajor and it's people. No longer can your citizenship be in question and it is with respect that I once again welcome you into the people of Bajor." She bowed her head and the image faded out. The screen changed to show a menu selection explaining what his rights as an Ambassador were, as well as the many avenues open for him to use in the course of his tasks. Sutton was pleased to note that the revised Bajoran Consulate staff of DS9 still included Relen whom he had thought of as efficient and reliable in the short time he had known him. They had even decided to remodel and expand the Consulate to give Sutton his own office inside. He decided to scan all the data in the rod before contacting Sisko as he wanted to know his own position better before having to see the Federation Commander. * ************************* * On his way to Ops, he was very conscious of everyone looking at him and he noted that Bajorans either gave him a friendly smile or nodded respectfully. When he eventually entered Sisko's office, he found Kira and Dax waiting there with him. Sisko stood up saying, "I thought it best if we had an informal discussion." Sutton nodded and sat down, noting that Kira and Dax seemed impressed by his new appearance. Sisko sat down and began, "Mr Sutton, things have been _quite_ complicated here over the past three months, especially with relations between Bajor and the Federation. These trade talks are a pivotal point and I'm sure you realise the importance it's had on a lot of things." Sutton nodded, "I _do_ understand only too well, Commander." Sisko sat back in his chair and sighed, "Actually Mr Sutton....I find it incredible that in less than two years you have found yourself in the position of a Bajoran Ambassador." Kira frowned, "Commander..." Sisko held up his hand and assured her, "It's alright Major, I'm not being disrespectful, but it shows that Bajorans hold him in high regard." He turned back to Sutton and continued, "A week after you'd left DS9, the trade representatives' ship came through the wormhole, but once they learned you weren't here, they immediately returned to the Gamma Quadrant without even docking. As soon as the Federation knew of the willingness of Gamma Quadrant systems to open trade talks, they sent in their best negotiators.......but not _one_ succeeded. Clearly you have some advantage that no-one else has. Would you like to elaborate on that for us?" Sutton smiled, "My loyalties have, and will always be to Bajor, Commander." He saw Kira smile and Sisko replied, "So in other words, you're telling me to mind my own business." Sutton didn't answer, but instead simply kept smiling. Sisko asked, "I hope you won't exclude the Federation from any first-contact involvements?" "No, but just as the Federation looks out for it's own interests, so I am doing the same for Bajor." "I don't think you're being entirely fair by saying that about the Federation." Sutton sighed, "I'll try to act in a responsible manner, Commander. I won't obstruct any first-contacts for the Federation, and I will be fair." Sisko frowned, "You worry me Mr Sutton. Even though you say you're loyal to Bajor, I wonder if it's going to lead us into serious trouble." "By _us_, you mean Bajor and the Federation?" "Yes, and also between you and myself as Commander of this station." "Don't you trust me, Commander?" "I don't know you well enough to decide that." "Then you'll just have to wait and make up your own mind." "And there's the question of Major Kira here. I _need_ my first officer, Mr Sutton. She's already spent considerable time these past months on......_other_ affairs. I would appreciate it if you don't tie up too much of her time in the future." Sutton looked at Kira and smiled, "Alright Commander, but I hope you won't restrict her involvement in matters that come to hand?" "_All_ my officers are available to you on a temporary basis, Ambassador." Everyone looked at Sisko, and then Sisko himself realised he had called Sutton by his title for the first time. It was something he had been trying to avoid, but now he just gave in and continued, "On a similar subject, we have been pressed by the Bajoran Government to make a Runabout available for your use. Another Runabout, the _'Colorado'_, will be transported here and stationed for your personal Ambassadorial duties. Furthermore, you also have full station security clearance." Sisko sighed, "You've been given a lot of power Ambassador, I hope you use it wisely." "I'll certainly try. I don't want us to be at each others throats, Commander." Sisko asked, "Dax, do you have any questions for the Ambassador?" "Yes, the Lanassians have had no contact with the Federation or any other Alpha Quadrant powers. Is there anything we need to be appraised of before they arrive here?" Sutton grinned, "No, and any aspects of themselves that they choose to keep confidential won't be revealed by myself either. I'm sorry Lieutenant." "My job _is_ to study other life forms and races....are you going to deny me access?" "Not at all, but I _will_ respect the Lanassians privacy." Dax seemed satisfied and Sutton asked Sisko, "I'd like to request a Runabout to visit New Bajor and the Toreth project, Commander. It's been awhile and I'd like to see how things are progressing there." Sisko nodded and Kira spoke up saying, "Commander, I'd be happy to take--" "Not this time, Major. I've got other duties for you. Dax will escort the Ambassador on this occasion." Sisko turned to Sutton and added, "That is, if it's okay with you." Sutton looked at Kira to see what sort of answer she might prefer but she gave no indication of what she wanted, so he merely nodded to Sisko. Kira gave a little smile and Sutton knew he'd made the right decision....this time at least. Sisko stood up and said, "I think we've just about covered things for now." As Sutton stood up, Sisko came around from his desk and offered his hand saying, "Good luck, Mr Sutton. I hope things go well....for everybody." They shook hands and then Dax offered her own handshake to Sutton saying, "Things look set for an interesting time around here." Sisko smiled, "I'll be looking forward to meeting the Lanassian delegate next week." Sutton and Kira stepped outside but Dax stayed with Sisko to talk further with him. When they stepped down from Sisko's office level, Kira said in a low voice to Sutton, "_He'll_ be looking forward to meeting them? The way he acts it's as if they're coming here to see _him_, not you." Sutton smiled, "I'm sure things will be okay. I hear Sisko's a fair man, and that's something I appreciate." "Well, _you're_ taking it all very calmly considering how important these talks will be." She leaned close and whispered, "Just what _is_ your advantage in all of this anyway?" "Patience Nerys, I'm not saying anything until they arrive." "Not even to _me_?" He looked into her eyes and smiled, "Let's just say that there's a personal apse ct involved between myself and the Lanassian delegate." Kira was more curious now than ever but as she went to follow Sutton into the turbolift, Sisko's voice called out, "Major, you're needed on lower three to take care of that science team." She looked back and nodded, then said to Sutton, "Whatever the reason is, just be sure to be back here on time for the meeting.", then she smiled and added as an afterthought, "....sir." They stepped on the turbolift together and descended. Dax came to stand beside Sisko. He turned to her and frowned, "I want you to try and get to know our Mr Sutton better on this trip, Dax. Find out everything you can about him. It seems the only person on this station he entirely trusts is Kira, and she's not about to give anything away to the Federation." "What do you mean....'get to know him'?" "I'll leave that up to you. Odo's come up with next to nothing on his background and that worries me, it worries me a great deal. Despite what good intentions Sutton has, his capacity to alter things in this sector as well as between the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants just can't be ignored. We'd be advised to keep watch on him......for all our sakes." * ************************* * Relen was genuinely pleased when Sutton visited the Consulate office. Relen smiled, "I've had a hell of a time these past few months, what with workers coming through here for the Toreth project, and having to deal with other matters. Oh, I also got a promotion, sir." Sutton smiled, "So I see...._Lieutenant_." "There's a staff of five here now and I'm in charge.", then he added quickly with a smile, "Well, that is when you aren't available. Would you like to see your new office?" "No, that's okay.", Sutton smiled, "I'll shortly be leaving for New Bajor to inspect the Toreth project, so it's all yours again." "Sir.....may I ask a personal question?" "Sure." "Well,.....everyone knows why you left but why didn't you stay and fight?" Sutton smiled and tapped his earring saying, "I left before they could take _this_ away from me,......my citizenship." Relen nodded, "I'll help in anyway I can next week with the trade talks." Sutton smiled and shook his head, "Yes, but if the delegate is still who I think it is, then it'll all depend on me, Relen." * ************************* * As they cleared the Wormhole exit, Dax asked Sutton, "Which first, New Bajor or Toreth?" "New Bajor, I think. I want to see how the workers facilities are holding up." "Computer...set course for New Bajor, warp five." "" Dax sat back in her seat and looked at Sutton who was gazing outside into space with obviously a lot of things on his mind. "Kira never _did_ say where she found you." "What?...oh,....she doesn't have to. I'm here now." "Would you have come back if anyone else but Kira had asked you to?" Sutton smiled, "That's a pretty straight forward question......and one that I think I don't want to answer." "You seem to get on quite well with her." He laughed, "Do you think so? You haven't been around during the arguments then." "And who wins?" "It's usually not as simple as that." "I suppose you would have preferred Kira to be sitting here with you?" Sutton smiled and said knowingly, "Somehow I don't think Kira is the kind of person to be at my beck and call. Besides, you seem to be quite an interesting person to get to know. I'm not complaining of my company." She accepted the compliment and smiled, "So, before you became involved with Bajor, what was your passion?" "Travel I suppose." "Where did you go?" "All over the place, nowhere significant though." "But that must have been expensive for you?" "I sort of worked my way around, staying here and there till it was time to move on." "Did you visit any interesting places?" He looked at Dax and slowly grinned, "I'm sorry, but if you really want to know about my past then you can look at my records." She smiled, "I did. There's isn't much there." "Then you should ask Bajoran Intelligence for a copy of their reports. I suspect they might have looked a little harder than the Federation might have done." Dax smiled wider, "I did that too." He laughed, "Well, at least you're being honest about it." "I've found that honesty is often the best policy. So, why don't you like the Federation?" "What makes you think I don't?" "You don't show much respect or consideration for it. The Federation's not an enemy." "Thanks for pointing that out for me.", he smiled. "You don't give much away about yourself, do you?" "Maybe not." Dax sighed, "The Federation will be watching you closely you know." "I guessed that already." "I thought you didn't like being observed?" "I don't, but this time I won't be running off. _This_ time I'm staying,.... _whatever_ happens." * ************************* * The Toreth project was progressing well. A few shipments of valuable minerals had already been extracted and it proved that Toreth would be a very profitable commodity to Bajor. The workers complex on New Bajor was laid out well and the workers appreciated it's facilities. Dax noted that Sutton seemed less of an Ambassador and more like a fellow worker when he was talking with the people here who treated him as one of their own. She found out by listening to him talking with the workers that he'd spent some time in various work camps himself as a low paid worker in the past, but he always omitted to mention specifics. So even though Dax couldn't determine where he'd worked, she saw enough to know that he'd approached the project from the workers point of view and so had made their working lives more enjoyable and somewhat easier for them. By the time they eventually left for the return trip to DS9, he confided to her, "I'm exhausted. Today's been one of the longest days of my life,...", then he added with a smile, ".....and the most pleasurable." As he slept in the seat beside her, Dax wondered why this one man seemed to be playing a key role in events, and why so many were making it their business to stop him. * ************************* * It was very late when they docked at the station, but when the airlock door rolled open, Kira was standing there. Instead of moving off, Dax decided to stay and see what would be said. Sutton asked Kira, "Anything wrong?" She smiled, "Maybe I'm just checking up to see if you came back or not." He smiled back, "Well as you can see, I'm here." "I've got some news. The Lanassian delegate will be arriving here tomorrow." "Tomorrow?" Kira softly laughed, "Maybe they don't want to miss another meeting." He replied in a slightly annoyed voice but still smiled, "Alright, I get the point." "They arrive at 09:00. I expect you want to be there when they dock?" He nodded and noticed Dax was about to speak so he smiled, "Yes Dax, the Commander can arrange a proper reception for the Lanassian delegate. Now if you two ladies will excuse me, I've got to get to bed. Goodnight." After he walked off, Dax smiled to Kira, "Looks like the Federation isn't the _only_ one keeping an eye on him." She smiled, "If you mean _me_, then you're right. I want these talks to go through smoothly. They mean a lot to Bajor." As they walked together along the access corridor, Dax said quietly, "He said he won't be running off again." "Did he now?", Kira smiled. "Don't you believe him?" "Yes, but if I keep a watch on him then nothing can happen, can it." "He also said he doesn't like being kept under observation." Kira grinned, "I think it all depends on who's actually watching him." Dax gave Kira a puzzled look and so Kira laughed, "C'mon! Don't try and tell me Sisko didn't get you to find out what you could from him. Look, don't worry, I'd do the same thing in his position." Dax smiled, "Care to share notes then?" Kira just smiled wider and didn't answer, so Dax said sarcastically, "I suppose you're just under _orders_ to keep an eye on him are you?" Kira gave a wry smile and simply said, "Goodnight, Dax", before Kira walked off leaving a bemused Dax behind her. * ************************* * It was 08:58 and Sisko was getting agitated. Sisko, Kira, Dax and Bashir were waiting for the arrival of the Lanassian delegate at the airlock, but Sutton wasn't there yet. Sisko said in an annoyed voice, "Major, is he going to show up?" She calmly tapped her badge and said, "Kira to Ambassador Sutton..." But instead of hearing his voice coming through her commbadge, he came around the corner and replied, "I'm here Kira. I'm sorry I'm almost late." She smiled, "And I thought you had a habit of being early." Sisko looked at Sutton unhappily but then the sounds of docking clamps engaging turned their attentions to the airlock door. Sisko looked back at Sutton who said, "I'll stay back here, Commander. This is after all your station." It placated Sisko a little, but he still had plenty of doubts about Sutton. The door rolled open and a beautiful woman in a white robe gracefully stepped over the airlock threshold, followed by two men who were plainly her bodyguards. It was easy to see that everyone present was impressed by her beauty. Sisko stepped forward and said, "I'm Benjamin Sisko, Commander of this station. On behalf of Bajor and the Federation of Planets, we welcome you." Sisko started to introduce his staff by saying, "This is my First Officer, Maj--" "Kira Nerys", the woman smiled, cutting Sisko off. She gave a little bow to Kira and said, "I do know of her already." Kira looked plainly confused but respectfully nodded her head to the woman. Sisko continued, "This is Lieutenant Jadzia Dax our science officer, Doctor Bashir our medical officer, and this is......Ambassador Sutton." She looked at him for a few seconds with a smile but said nothing before turning back to Sisko and the others to say, "I am Alayna Leora, Matra of the Lanassian people. These two are here at the insistence of my Security section, Commander." Sisko smiled, "I can assure you that the security arrangements are more than adequate here." She looked back to Sutton for a few moments and then she seemed somehow re-assured. Turning back to Sisko she asked, "Is it possible you could show me around this station of yours before the talks are due to start?" "I'd be delighted, Matra." "Please, I believe it would be more appropriate for you to call me 'Leora'." "Very well,...Leora it is then." Dax asked politely, "Excuse me.....what does 'Matra" mean?" Leora smiled, "It could equate in your terms as......princess,.....queen perhaps,.....yes, that is closer." If everyone had been impressed before, now they were doubly so, all except Sutton. As Leora began walking with Sisko, she stopped at Sutton and looked into his eyes quietly for a few seconds. He smiled, "Yes, I'll be there _this_ time, I promise you." A few more moments passed and he said, "Well, I _am_ sorry about that, but you know why." The others looked very puzzled until she nodded to Sutton who told them, "The Lanassian people are both telepathic and empathic. But they have a solemn observance for the laws on personal privacy so don't be alarmed, Alayna won't be intruding on you." Everyone noticed that he's used her first name, and so he added with a smile, "And yes, I _have_ met this charming lady before." She walked off with Sisko and Bashir while Leora's bodyguards followed at a discreet distance. Dax and Kira remained behind with Sutton. Kira said flatly, "You know a queen of a star system and you didn't think it worth mentioning?" "You wanted to know my advantage, well that's part of it." Dax asked, "And the other part?" "I was.....involved with her for a time. It was the Lanassians from who I obtained the land reclamators." They began slowly walking down the corridor and Kira asked with a frown, "You were _involved_ with her?" "It was.....a personal thing." Dax smiled, "Oh yes?" She glanced at Kira who asked him in an almost annoyed voice, "Would you like to define _'personal'_?" He smiled, "Perhaps later. For now be thankful she _is_ here. The Lanassians are quite a secular race. Because of their abilities, others regard them with unease and suspicion, but they're often used in cases of verification such as trade, which is why she's here representing other systems in the Gamma Quadrant." Dax asked, "So they can read other peoples thoughts and emotions entirely?" "Yes, but they hold their privacy laws above all else. They never intrude on a persons mind without consent." Kira remarked sharply, "Well any thoughts I have in _my_ mind are going to stay in there." Sutton smiled, "They're truly a peaceful race but one that is extremely high in technology. It's their technology that keeps the defence of their star system, but they're very unforthcoming in making any of their technology available to anyone else." Kira asked, "Then how did _you_ get it then?" He smiled wider, "Because of the personal wishes of Alayna." The entered a turbolift and as they began speeding through the station, Sutton said to Dax, "You may ask Alayna questions but don't expect too many answers. She's here for these trade talks and won't give anything away about her people to you other than what I've just told you. I hope you understand the trade talks are private, Dax. You can attend but only if you agree to keep _all_ information confidential. In this way you'll be able to see how the Lanassians conduct their business." "I'll have to speak to the Commander first." They turbolift stopped at the Promenade level and the doors opened. Sutton and Kira stepped out of the turbolift while Dax used it to continue her journey. As they slowly walked along the Promenade, Kira asked him, "Why risk involving the Federation at all?" "Because Alayna trusts Dax." "What do you mean she _trusts_ Dax?" He smiled, "Alayna felt Dax could be trusted and she told me so telepathically." Kira frowned, "You're right about one thing,....Lanassians _do_ make people feel uneasy,....including me." * ************************* * Sutton and Kira sat on each side of the conference table and waited for Alayna to arrive. While he busily tapped at his PADD, Kira was busily tapping the table nervously with her fingers. Finally Sutton put down the PADD and sighed, "Why so nervous, Nerys?" She frowned, "This could be a huge advance for Bajor and I've got to leave it up to just _two_ people." He was about to answer when the door opened and Dax escorted Leora inside. They stood up while Leora and Dax took their seats around the table with Dax taking her own seat off to one side. As Kira and Sutton sat back down, Leora said to him, "I am glad this meeting is finally taking place." Sutton nodded, "And who are you representing, Alayna?" "Twelve star systems. Depending on how these talks proceed, I will either give my recommendations, or my objections to them on approaching you with their individual trade talks." "So you're here as a scout?" She smiled, "Perceptive of you as always, Paul." Dax and Kira both noticed how informal Leora and Sutton were. It was plain to see that they had spent time together before. Leora continued, "These systems have much to offer in the way of trade. What has Bajor to offer?" Kira leaned forward and became very attentive because she didn't know what Sutton was going to say. Each time she had asked him about this beforehand, he'd just smiled and told her not to worry. That had only made her worry more. He handed her the PADD, and as she looked at the information he said, "As you can see there are many systems in the Alpha Quadrant that aren't aligned with the Federation. Bajor holds jurisdiction over the Wormhole and is willing to negotiate trade links in exchange for a permanent cargo fee on all commerce. This fee will be a fair and equitable one. Furthermore, Bajor is interested in trade with systems to help rebuild itself. Once Bajor is known for it's trade contacts, the Alpha Quadrant worlds, including those of the Federation will be welcome to negotiate through Bajoran links. The fees that Bajor will impose will always be fair and I'll make sure they stay that way." Alayna put down the PADD and looked into Suttons eyes. They looked at each other for quite awhile before she picked up the PADD again to review some information. Sutton smiled, and it was all too much for Kira who said quietly to Leora, "Can I ask a question?" "Yes?" "Why did you supply Paul.....I mean the Ambassador here with the reclamation equipment? We couldn't hope to pay for any of it and it's only now with the mining of Toreth that we're raising capital for other projects." Leora smiled, "He hasn't told you anything about what occurred, has he?" Sutton just smiled and looked away. Kira shook her head and Leora explained, "Paul arrived in our system not by want, but because of necessity. His ship was badly damaged and needed repairs. It was while he was at a orbital station around one of our moons that he first came to my attention. You see we discourage all outside contact with our people on our worlds. Non-Lanassians are forbidden to set foot on our planets, so all trade and necessary contacts are made in our orbital stations, which are something like this one. Paul was the first person our people had encountered from the Alpha Quadrant. It was brought to my attention and I was curious. We had heard about this passageway in space but because we are so very far away from it, it was not much of a concern of ours. But with his arrival, it was plainly a matter that had to be now considered. I took the decision to meet him myself but not to let him know that I was the Matra of our people. He was told of our abilities and when he allowed me into his mind, I found that his thoughts and feelings matched those of his words that he had spoken before. A lie is considered repulsive in our society. It is truth and openness that has enabled our culture to survive and prosper. I was intrigued by Paul very much and was pleased enough to offer him a place in my household." Kira looked puzzled and Leora smiled, "You would call it a husband, although in our culture we can have many wives and husbands." Kira just stared at Sutton intensely and Leora added with a smile, "But he would not stay." Kira turned back to Leora and nodded her thanks, but Leora said, "It is Paul who deserves your thanks. It is _he_ who declined my offer, and instead returned to you with our technology. I am pleased that he speaks for your people now. If it was any other I would not have come." Leora put down the PADD and said, "I have considered the information and I have seen into Paul's mind. Kira Nerys, perhaps _you_ would like to tell me what these trade agreements may bring." "Me!? Why are you asking me?", Kira said in surprise. "I know of you from what Paul has spoken, and also from what I have seen in his thoughts. He respects your opinions and I wish to hear them." Kira glanced at Sutton for a moment and then answered, "Bajor _needs_ these trade agreements. We need them to rebuild and grow strong again." "Strong enough to be a powerful force?" "If need be, yes." "I understand very well the need for self-reliance. The Lanassians were not always powerful enough to defend ourselves. No-one would dare to attack us again." "I want Bajor to be free, independent, and not have to worry about a threat like the Cardassians ever again destroying my people." Leora smiled, "They are the thoughts and words of Paul too." Leora looked at Dax and said in a curious voice, "Your species is very unique. It is one we have not encountered before. You have some very interesting insights." Dax smiled at what she took to be compliments. Leora continued, "I understand that you are a science officer, but I would like your personal opinion on what aspect the Federation would play in all of this." Dax took a deep breath and answered, "Bajor should rebuild, that's only right, whether they prosper and grow is up to them and their aspirations. I think the Federation will view the trade agreements, if they go ahead, to be highly unfortunate for them." "Would it lead to hostilities?" "No, I don't think so. But it _would_ be a very good way to have a much stronger presence for all Bajoran affairs." Leora looked back to Sutton and they knew she was in his mind again. Kira silently clenched her fists to her side as the tension in her climbed. It was quite awhile before Leora looked away from him and said, "I have made my decision. I will recommend that trade relations be entered into." Kira tried to suppress a smile and Sutton saw she was pleased with the outcome. Kira looked over to Dax and she too looked pleased at the result, or maybe it was the release of the tension of waiting. Leora added, "I will also recommend to those I represent that Paul should be personally involved with negotiations. Sutton smiled and Kira asked Leora, "Excuse me for asking, but why him?" She smiled, "Because I trust him." Kira nodded and Leora added, "Trust is a much sought after commodity, even in the Gamma Quadrant." Leora looked around and decreed, "I believe these talks are now at an end." They all stood up and Dax took up her escort duty as she accompanied Leora out of the conference room. As Kira and Sutton were about to follow, Kira gently took hold of Suttons arm and stopped him. He turned to her and she asked, "Tell me, why did you leave a chance to be comfortable and married to a beautiful queen on a rich world?" He smiled, "Perhaps I had something better to come back to." Kira just looked into his eyes and smiled. * ************************* * * ************************* * * ************************* * * ************************* * * End of book 2 * * "Destiny Awaits" * * ************************* * * ************************* * -end of file-
